She was the mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988 and was a member of the Democratic Party. Feinstein was born in San Francisco and received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1955. She worked in local government in San Francisco in the 1960s. In 1969, Feinstein was elected to the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco. In 1978, she became the board’s first female president, at a time when Dan White’s assassination of Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk garnered national attention. Feinstein took over as mayor after Moscone stepped down, becoming the first woman to do so.
Feinstein was born Dianne Emiel Goldman in San Francisco, the daughter of a surgeon and his former model wife Betty. Her paternal grandparents were Polish Jewish immigrants. The Rosenburgs, her maternal grandparents, were from Saint Petersburg, Russia. While they were of German-Jewish descent, they practiced the Russian Orthodox faith, as was necessary for Jews in Saint Petersburg. Feinstein’s mother was raised Catholic and urged on her transfer from a Jewish day school to a prestigious local Catholic school, yet Feinstein cites Judaism as her religion. She received her high school diploma from Convent of the Sacred Heart in 1951 and her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1955.
In 1969, Feinstein was elected to the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco. She unsuccessfully ran for mayor of San Francisco twice during her time on the Board of Supervisors, in 1971 against Mayor Joseph Alioto and in 1975, when she lost a runoff slot to Supervisor John Barbagelata by one percentage point. The NWLF planted a bomb on her home’s windowsill, but it didn’t go off. Later, the gang fired out the windows of her beach house.
Former supervisor Dan White killed Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk on November 27, 1978. As head of the Board of Supervisors, Feinstein assumed the role of acting mayor. Feinstein was endorsed for mayor by the Board of Supervisors by John Molinari, Ella Hill Hutch, Ron Pelosi, Robert Gonzales, and Gordon Lau. Gonzales ran for mayor but stepped out when the Board of Supervisors appointed him. Feinstein was appointed mayor by the Board of Supervisors by a vote of six to two. On December 4, 1978, she was sworn in as San Francisco’s first female mayor by Chief Justice Rose Bird of the California Supreme Court. Molinari was chosen.
