Edward John Markey is an American lawyer and politician who has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate since 2013. From 1976 through 2013, he served as the Democratic Party’s congressman for Massachusetts’ 7th congressional district. Markey has spent more than four decades in Congress, serving in both the House and the Senate. From 1973 to 1976, he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

He defeated Republican Richard Daly by 77 percent to 18 percent in the November 1976 election.
