Barcelona is a professional football club headquartered in Barcelona, Spain. It competes in La Liga, Spain’s top level. The club, which was founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, Spanish, German, and English footballers led by Joan Gamper, has become a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalan nationalism, therefore the motto “Més que un club” (“More than a club”).

Barcelona is owned and operated by its fans, unlike many other football clubs. It is the world’s fourth most valuable sports franchise, valued $4.76 billion, and the world’s richest football club in terms of revenue, with a €715.1 million yearly turnover.  The “Cant del Barça,” composed by Jaume Picas and Josep Maria Espinàs, is the official Barcelona song.

Barcelona is known for its dark blue and red stripes, earning the moniker Blaugrana.Barcelona has won a total of 75 domestic trophies, including 26 La Liga titles, 31 Copa del Rey awards, thirteen Supercopa de Espaa titles, three Copa Eva Duarte titles, and two Copa de la Liga titles, as well as holding the record for the latter four competitions.

Five UEFA Champions League wins, a record four UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups, a joint record five UEFA Super Cups, a record three Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cups have all been won by the club in international club football.  Barcelona was ranked first in the International Federation of Football History and Statistics Club World Ranking in 1997, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2015, and is now placed eighth in the UEFA club rankings.

The club has a long-standing rivalry with Real Madrid, which is known as El Clásico. The nickname culer (English: arse) for a Barcelona fan comes from the Catalan cul (English: arse), as spectators at the original stadium, Camp de la Indstria, sat with their culs over the stand.

In Spain, roughly 25% of the population is believed to favour Barça, second only to Real Madrid, which is supported by 32% of the population.  Barcelona is the second-most popular club in Europe. The club’s membership numbers have risen dramatically from 100,000 in the 2003–04 season to 170,000 in September 2009,

owing to Ronaldinho’s and then-president Joan Laporta’s media strategy, which emphasised Spanish and English online media. In addition to membership, there are 1,259 officially registered fan clubs, known as penyes, all around the world as of 2021. The fan clubs promote Barcelona in their communities and receive special deals when they visit the city.

Barcelona has the world’s second largest social media following among sports clubs, with over 103 million Facebook fans as of December 2021, trailing only Real Madrid with 111 million. Many notable figures have backed the club, including Pope John Paul II, who was an honorary member, and José Luis Rodrguez Zapatero, the former Prime Minister of Spain.

The club’s first crest was a quartered diamond-shaped crest topped by the Crown of Aragon and the bat of King James, and surrounded by two branches, one of a laurel tree and the other of a palm, and capped by the Crown of Aragon and the bat of King James. As a sign of its affiliation with the city and a wish to be recognised as such, the club adopted Barcelona’s coat of arms.

The club organised a competition among its members in 1910 to create a new crest. Carles Comamala, a player with the team at the time, was the winner. Comamala’s suggestion became the club’s current crest, with slight alterations. The St George Cross is on the upper-left corner, with the Catalan flag beside it, and the team colours are at the bottom.

In a match against Hispania in 1900, the shirt’s blue and red colours were first used. The blue and red pattern of the Barcelona shirt has sparked several opposing hypotheses. Arthur Witty, the first president’s son, said it was his father’s idea because the colours were the same as the Merchant Taylor’s School squad.

According to author Toni Strubell, the colours could be from Robespierre’s First Republic. The colours, according to popular belief in Catalonia, were chosen by Joan Gamper and are those of his home team, FC Basel. When the stadium needed to be redesigned to satisfy UEFA requirements in 1980, the team earned funds by allowing supporters to inscribe their names on the bricks for a modest price.

Thousands of people paid the charge because they liked the idea. Later, allegations that one of the stones was etched with the name of long-time Real Madrid chairman and Franco loyalist Santiago Bernabéu sparked uproar in Madrid.  Two tiers of seating were built above the old roofline in preparation for the 1992 Summer Olympics.

It is the largest stadium in Europe, with a current capacity of 99,354. In December 2021, a record 88 percent of FC Barcelona members voted in favour of the Espai Barça proposal to renovate the club’s sporting facilities, making it the first online referendum in club history.  Originally scheduled to be finished in 2021, it is now expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with an estimated €1.5 billion in net funding.
