Marguerite Ulven Ringheim On February 16, 1999, in the town of Horten, was born. With her sisters and her separated parents, she grew up in the town, which she characterised as “peaceful and pretty dull” in an interview with Triple J in October 2019.
Her father was a police officer and her mother was a technologist. Despite the fact that her grandfather was a skilled musician, she didn’t grow up with musical instruments in the house. Ulven’s grandfather gave her her first guitar for Christmas in 2012, but she didn’t begin playing it until she got bored with fingerboarding in 2013.
She attributes the beginning of her musical interest to her granddad. Prior to being taught how to play the guitar and write songs when she was 14 years old, Ulven was interested in becoming a teacher while still in high school. She had trained herself in music production, guitar, piano, and other instruments in the comfort of her bedroom.
Ulven started out writing and distributing Norwegian music and had plans to study music, but she never thought she would end up being a musician. Under the alias “Lydia X,” Ulven started creating and posting Norwegian music to SoundCloud after receiving a Blue Yeti microphone from her father in 2015.
As six months, she stopped taking guitar lessons after her instructor failed to recognise her interest in songwriting and producing. Ulven created the stage name “Girl in Red” after failing to locate herself in a throng and texting a friend.
In November 2016, she released her debut song, “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend,” on SoundCloud under the new name. Within five months, it received roughly 5,000 streams. Ulven got a sizable internet following after the song was featured on the Norwegian music website NRK Urrt and amassed thousands of streams. “Summer Depression” and “Girls,” two of Ulven’s 2018 hits, received millions of online views and streaming.
She received her first honour at the 2018 GAFFA Awards, where she was named “Norwegian Newcomer of the Year,” at the beginning of 2019. In March 2018, Ulven published “I Want to Be Your Girlfriend” on Apple Music. Following the 14 September 2018 release of Ulven’s debut EP, Chapter 1, “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” debuted at number 9 on The New York Times list of “The 68 Best Songs of 2018.”
At the 2018 awards event, she sang the song as an intermission act alongside Astrid S, Dagny, and Emilie Nicolas. Ulven began her first North American tour in March 2019 with Conan Gray as her support act. On September 6, 2019, under AWAL, she released Chapter 2, her second EP, as well as Beginnings, a collection of all of her singles that was only available on vinyl.
In October 2019, she began her first solo, international tour, calling it “World in Red.” She made stops in places including Dublin and San Francisco. In the “Newcomer of the Year” category of the 2019 P3 Gull Awards, Ulven was nominated. In December 2019, Ulven and British music distributor AWAL agreed to a global recording deal.
Her whole discography, which was previously self-released and was an uncommon occurrence for new label signees, was afterwards registered under this label on all digital music platforms. In December 2019, Ulven was featured on the front covers of Gay Times and Dork,as well as the NME cover in January 2020.
She contributed the song “Kate’s Not Here” to the original score of the supernatural horror movie The Turning from 2020. Ulven was nominated for the Newcomer of the Year prize at the 2020 Spellemannprisen, generally known as the Norwegian Grammy Awards, and as a result, received the Gramo scholarship.

On the social media app TikTok, where users would frequently use the common question “Do you listen to Girl in Red?” to inquire about someone’s sexual orientation, she rose to prominence as a symbol of queer identification by the middle of 2020.
The solitary Christmas song “Two Queens in a King Sized Bed” was released by her in November, just before she won Artist of the Year at the 2020 P3 Gull Awards. If I Could Make It Go Quiet, Ulven’s debut studio album, was released on April 30, 2021.
Four singles—”Midnight Love” in April 2020, “Rue” in August 2020, “Serotonin” in March 2021 and “You Stupid Bitch” in April 2021—have so far been released in support of the album.
