Arnold Ventures LLC, previously the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, was founded by John Douglas Arnold (born 1974), an American philanthropist. Arnold became the youngest billionaire in the United States in 2007. Centaurus Advisors, LLC, a Houston-based hedge fund that specialised in trading energy products, closed its doors in 2012. Through Arnold Ventures LLC, he now focuses on charity.
He started his work with Enron as an oil analyst after graduation, but was quickly promoted to assistant trader. Following the resignation of Jeff Bussan, he was promoted to manage the trading of natural gas derivatives at the Natural Gas Desk in 1996, a year after joining Enron. He is credited with making three quarters of a billion dollars for Enron in 2001 using their new Internet-based trading network, EnronOnline, and was paid with the highest bonus in Enron history, $8 million. He was called “king of natural gas” by his former coworkers. When Enron went bankrupt, he was cleared of any wrongdoing. In 2002, he used his previous year’s bonus to start Centaurus, a hedge fund. A government panel referenced him extensively for his views on the sector. Centaurus is widely recognised as one of the key participants on the opposite side of Amaranth Advisors’ collapse, recovering as much as 150 percent in 2005. Centaurus bought about 10% of National Coal Corporation’s stock in August 2008. (NCOC). Arnold delivered a public statement to the United States Commodity Contracts Trading Commission (CFTC) in 2009, opposing limitations on financially settled trading positions but supporting limits on physical energy futures as they approached expiration.
Arnold announced his retirement on his website. Arnold was named chairman of Houston’s campaign for the FIFA World Cup in 2026 in 2019. Arnold first gave $30,000 to the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP), which was then centred in Houston, in 2004, and two years later he and his wife donated $10 million to assist KIPP grow to other areas. Other multi-million dollar contributions to education initiatives followed, including merit pay in Washington, D.C. public schools, Teach for America, and StudentsFirst. Arnold has also donated to The City Fund and Public School Allies, an organisation dedicated to increasing the number of charter schools in the United States. Arnold came out against donor-advised funds (DAFs) in 2019, accusing them of delaying charitable contributions and favouring organisations that are less likely to require the cash. He recommended that foundations and DAFs spend at least 7% of their assets yearly, resulting in billions of dollars in additional donations to charity, and that DAFs be legally required to make an annual minimum payout. Arnold was one of 10 billionaires who have given up at least 20% of their fortune by the year 2020.
