Joshua Winslow Groban is an American singer, songwriter, musician, actor, and record producer who was born on February 27, 1981[1]. His first four solo albums were certified multi-platinum, and he was the top-selling artist in the United States in 2007, with over 22.3 million albums sold.  He had sold more than 25 million records around the world as of 2012.

Josh started out as an actor, but as his voice improved, he transitioned to singing. He went at the Los Angeles County High Institution for the Arts, a free public school on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles, that offers a conservatory-style education.  At the rehearsal for the 1998 Grammy Awards, David Foster asked Josh to fill in for Andrea Bocelli, who was ill, to perform a duet with Celine Dion called “The Prayer.”

Rosie O’Donnell offered him a spot on her talk programme right away.  Foster invited him to perform at Governor Gray Davis’ inauguration in California in 1999. He was cast on Ally McBeal by David E. Kelley, the show’s creator, for the season four finale of 2001, playing “You’re Still You.”He made his Broadway debut in 2016 as Pierre Bezukhov in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, to critical acclaim and a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, following his appearances in two professional productions of the musical Chess.

His performance at the 72nd Tony Awards garnered him two Primetime Emmy nominations for the song “This One’s for You,” one for Outstanding Live Variety Special and the other for Original Music and Lyrics. In the Netflix original series The Good Cop, Groban co-starred as Tony Caruso Jr. Groban also starred in the films Coffee Town, Muppets Most Wanted, The Hollars, and Crazy, Stupid, Love as the host of Rising Star. Danny Chase in The Crazy Ones and Walter Bernard Jr. in The Office were two of his TV roles.

Groban is the son of businessman Jack Groban and schoolteacher Lindy Groban  and was born in Los Angeles, California.  His father is a descendent of Jewish immigrants from Poland and Ukraine, and when he married his mother, he converted from Judaism to Christianity.  His mother has English, German, and Norwegian ancestors, and one of her grandfathers was Jewish. His parents are Episcopalians.

When Groban was in seventh grade, he sung for the first time in front of an audience. His music teacher chose him to perform a solo performance of “S’wonderful” during the school’s cabaret night, which was his first experience singing alone on stage. He was primarily focused on performing at the time, having played Tevye in his high school’s Fiddler on the Roof performance. He also majored in musical theatre and began taking vocal lessons at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp in Michigan in the summers of 1997 and 1998. He then went on to study theatre at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, graduating in 1999.

Groban was offered a recording contract four months into his first semester and dropped out to pursue a career as a singer. Groban and Sarah Brightman performed at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium on July 1, 2007, which was viewed by approximately 500 million people in 140 countries. Groban performed with Andrea Bocelli as a tribute to Luciano Pavarotti at the 2008 Grammy Awards on February 10, 2008.

Groban appeared on the PBS Soundstage with Idina Menzel on April 14, 2008. He taped his own episode of the same PBS TV show the next day at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall for Jazz in Manhattan. Groban appeared as “The Russian” Anatoly Sergievsky in “Chess in Concert,” a live concert version of the musical Chess composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame, on May 12 and 13, 2008 at the Royal Albert Hall in London with Broadway stars Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal. Since then, a DVD and CD of this concert have been released.

At the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on September 21, 2008, Groban performed a comedic mashup of popular TV theme music. Groban was a guest on Never Mind the Buzzcocks in December of 2008. At the Royal Variety Show honouring the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall at the London Palladium, he sang a duet with Only Men Aloud. Groban sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” in duet with Heather Headley at the Presidential Inauguration on January 18, 2009.

Groban and Herbie Hancock performed in Washington, DC on January 19, 2009 as part of Feeding America’s Rally Against Hunger. He sang the Star Spangled Banner with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, during the 2010 BCS National Championship Game on January 7, 2010. Groban co-starred with Howerton in the 100th episode of the cable television comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In the fantasy sequence of Dee, he appears. He had his first of many cameos opposite Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar in the CBS comedy The Crazy Ones on November 7, 2013.

Groban played an anonymous prisoner in a maximum-security jail in Siberia in the Muppets Most Wanted film from 2014. Groban’s character can only be heard at first because he is enclosed in a massive metal box with a small slot near his eyes. Later in the movie, the actor is revealed in the musical number “Together Again.” He had cameo appearances in Parks and Recreation’s seventh season (2015) and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (as himself), in which he sung the original song “The End of the Movie.”

The Good Cop, an original murder mystery featuring Groban, launched on Netflix in September 2018. Groban plays NYPD homicide detective Tony Caruso Jr., while Tony Danza plays his father, Tony Sr., a disgraced former detective, in the series produced by Monk creator-writer Andy Breckman.  On September 21, 2018, the first season’s ten episodes premiered. Josh Groban announced the release of Stages, a cover album of Broadway musical songs, on his Facebook page in early March 2015. On April 28th, 2015, the album was released. Groban made his Broadway debut as Pierre Bezukhov in Dave Malloy’s electropop opera Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which premiered on October 18, 2016.

Groban was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his portrayal as Pierre in the musical. On July 2, 2017, he gave his last appearance as Pierre.  Groban also appeared in the 2017 Disney picture Beauty and the Beast’s end credits, singing “Evermore.” Groban’s Bridges Tour, which includes special guest Idina Menzel, was announced on March 12, 2018. The tour kicked up in Duluth, Georgia on October 18 and ended on November 18 in Madison Square Garden in New York City. The tour’s European leg kicked off on December 12 in London’s O2 Arena and ended on December 18 in Poland.

Groban announced on social media on June 26, 2018, that his album Bridges will be published on September 21, 2018, and that it would include a cover of Céline Dion’s “S’il suffisait d’aimer” as well as new songs. The album debuted at number two in the United States, as well as in the top ten in the United Kingdom and Scotland. Groban’s album Harmony will be released in November 2020, as stated on August 17, 2020. Throughout the autumn and winter of 2020, Groban will host a virtual livestreamed concert series.  The album will be published on November 20, 2020, according to the announcement made on October 2. From the standard to the deluxe version, the album is now available on all platforms.
