Katy Perry is an American singer, songwriter, and television judge who was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984. She is regarded with influencing the sound and style of pop music in the decade following her death. She began singing in church as a child before pursuing it professionally, signing with Red Hill Records and releasing her commercially unsuccessful gospel debut studio album Katy Hudson (2001) under her birth name.

After Red Hill went bankrupt, she moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17 to pursue a career in secular music, giving herself the stage name “Katy Perry” after her mother’s maiden name. While signed to Java Records and later Columbia Records, Perry began working on an album named Fingerprints with producers such as Glen Ballard, Butch Walker, and Greg Wells.

After executive Angelica Cob-Baehler assisted her in signing a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007, much of the work from this period surfaced on One Of The Boys. Perry rose to prominence with her second studio album and major label debut, One of the Boys (2008), a pop rock album that featured her first hit “I Kissed a Girl” and follow-up single “Hot n Cold,” which charted at number one and three on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Teenage Dream (2010), a disco-influenced pop album, produced five US number one singles: “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, “E.T.”, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, making it the first solo female artist to accomplish so, and tying her with Michael Jackson’s Bad.

The number one single “Part of Me” and the number two song “Wide Awake” were later released on the reissue Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection (2012). Prism (2013) is a pop/dance song about self-reflection, ordinary living, and relationships. Perry became the first artist to have multiple videos with one billion views on YouTube with the music videos for his chart-topping singles “Roar” and “Dark Horse.” Witness (2017) had an electropop sound with a political undercurrent, themes of liberation, and self-described “purposeful pop,” whilst Smile (2020) included themes of motherhood and self-help.

Every one of Perry’s Capitol albums has topped one billion Spotify streams. In 2021, she began her first residency, Play, at Resorts World Las Vegas. Perry was seen in Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video in June of this year. After filing a copyright case alleging that it exploited his track’s beat without permission, a jury in California found Perry’s song “Dark Horse” had plagiarised Flame’s 2008 song “Joyful Noise” after a week-long trial, which was later overturned.

Following the initial verdict, the jury ordered her to pay $550,000 to him. Perry’s co-star in the music video “Teenage Dream,” Josh Kloss, accused her of sexual assault the following month. Kloss said that Perry exposed his penis to her male friends during a party at a skating rink, according to an Instagram post.

also claimed that her management forbade him from discussing his relationship with the artist. The party’s creative director, Johnny Wujek, defended Perry, saying she “would never do something like that” and accusing him of having a “ongoing fascination” with her. Perry has also refuted Kloss’ charges, after first declining to comment because he believed it would detract from the Me Too movement.

Perry announced she was having her first child with Bloom in the music video for her single “Never Worn White,” which was released in March 2020.On May 15, 2020, she released “Daisies,” the first single off her sixth album. Two months later, it released its second single, “Smile.” Smile was launched on August 28, 2020.

She gave birth to a daughter called Daisy Dove Bloom just two days before the book’s release. The album was met with mixed reviews and debuted at number five in the US. Camp Katy,Empowered,Scorpio SZN, and Cosmic Energy are four compilation EPs Perry released to promote the album.  In December 2020, Perry released the track “Not the End of the World,” which featured Zooey Deschanel impersonating Perry in a music video.

She also created two remixes of Smile album tunes in collaboration with various musicians. In November 2020, Tisto published a remix of “Resillient” with Aitana, and in April 2021, Bruno Martini released a remix of “Cry About It Later” with Lusa Sonza. On January 20, 2021, at Joe Biden’s inauguration, Perry sang “Firework” at the Celebrating America concert.

Four months later, she released “Electric,” a joint effort with Pokémon to commemorate their 25th anniversary. Perry has spoken out in support of LGBT rights, admitting that her song “I Kissed a Girl” was inspired by her own bisexual experiences with other women. She was honoured by Human Rights Campaign with the Nation Equality Award in 2017 for “using her unique voice and international platform to speak out for LGBTQ equality.”

She spoke about her bisexual experiences, her fluid sexuality, and the LGBTQ+ community in her acceptance speech. She was dubbed a “gay icon” in an Out interview in 2021, and her song “I Kissed a Girl” was dubbed a “true queer anthem.” In the same interview, she expressed her gratitude towards the LGBTQ+ community by saying: “I grew up in a very secluded environment where being friends with members of that community was frowned upon.

And now that’s my community, […] I couldn’t have survived without it, and it’s incredible how far I’ve come and how much I’ve grown since I first started.” She backed Stonewall’s anti-bullying campaign “It Gets Better….. Today,”and donated the music video for her song “Firework” to the It Gets Better Project.

“I’ve always been a really open-minded person, but I definitely believe in equality,” Perry told Do Something in 2008, describing herself as a proud LGBT rights fighter. Perry stated her support for LGBT equality in June 2012, saying, “Hopefully, we will look back on this time and think about [other] civil rights concerns the same way we do now. ‘Thank God we’ve developed,’ we’ll exclaim as we shake our heads in bewilderment. That is my future wish.” Perry was honoured by The Trevor Project in December 2012 with the Trevor Hero Award for her activism and commitment on
