Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish MBE (born 4 March 1951) is a Scottish footballer and manager who played for and managed Celtic. He made 338 appearances for Celtic and 515 for Liverpool as a forward during his career, scoring 30 goals in a joint-record 102 complete caps for Scotland.

In 1983, Dalglish was awarded the Ballon d’Or Silver Award, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award, and the FWA Footballer of the Year Award. Dalglish was deemed the best striker in postwar British football by FourFourTwo magazine in 2009, and he is a member of both the Scottish and English Football Halls of Fame.

He is still fondly referred to as “King Kenny” by Liverpool fans, who voted him first in the “100 Players Who Shook the Kop” fan poll in 2006. Despite winning the League Cup for the first time since 2006, earning a spot in the UEFA Europa League, and reaching the FA Cup Final, Liverpool ended eighth in the Premier League, and Dalglish was fired in May 2012.

Dalglish returned to Liverpool as a non-executive director in October 2013, and in May 2017, the Centenary Stand was renamed after him. Dalglish was born in Dalmarnock in Glasgow’s east end and raised in Milton in the city’s north end, the son of an engineer. When he was 14, his family relocated to Ibrox, to a newly constructed tower block overlooking Rangers’ home pitch, the team he had grown up supporting.

Dalglish began his soccer career as a goalkeeper at Miltonbank Primary School in Milton. After that, he went to High Possil Senior Secondary School, where he won the inter-schools and inter-year five-a-side games. He was selected for the Scottish schoolboys team that went unbeaten in the Home Nations Victory Shield event after winning the Scottish Cup with Glasgow Schoolboys and Glasgow Schools.

Dalglish tried out for West Ham and Liverpool in 1966 but was turned down. Since November 26, 1974, Dalglish has been married to Marina.  Kelly, Paul, Lynsey, and Lauren are the couple’s four kids. Kelly has worked as a football presenter for Sky Sports and BBC Radio 5 Live.

Paul played in the Premier League and the Scottish Premiership before moving to the United States to play for the Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer. He retired in 2008 and went on to coach in the second-tier leagues of North America, serving as the head coach of Ottawa Fury FC and Miami FC.

Marina Dalglish, Dalglish’s wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2003[92], however she recovered after treatment at Liverpool’s Aintree University Hospital. She went on to found a charity to help hospitals in the United Kingdom purchase modern cancer treatment equipment.

the 1985 New Year Honours, Dalglish was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his contributions to football.  In the 2018 Birthday Honours, he was made a Knight Bachelor for his contributions to sport, philanthropy, and the City of Liverpool.  He said he was “humbled” and “a little embarrassed” after receiving the prize, which he dedicated to former Celtic and Liverpool coaches Jock Stein, Bill Shankly, and Bob Paisley.

Celtic fans voted for the best Celtic team of all time in 2002. Simpson, McGrain, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Auld, Johnstone, P. McStay, Dalglish, Larsson, and Lennox were all elected into the team.  In the same year, he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame for the first time, and the Scottish Football Hall of Fame for the first time in 2004.

He is still fondly referred to as “King Kenny” by Liverpool fans, who voted him first in the fans’ poll “100 Players Who Shook the Kop” in 2006. Dalglish was declared the greatest attacker in British football after WWII by FourFourTwo magazine in 2009. Dalglish was discovered to be positive for COVID-19 in early April 2020, while in hospital for treatment for an unrelated ailment.

The Marina Dalglish Appeal was launched by Dalglish and his wife in 2004 to collect money for cancer research. Dalglish has taken part in several fundraising events, including a rematch of the 1986 FA Cup Final. After raising £1.5 million, the charity was able to open an oncology centre at Aintree University Hospital in June 2007.

The Walton Centre was given a new state-of-the-art MRI scanner thanks to a £2 million grant from the foundation in 2012. Dalglish is a regular participant in the Gary Player Invitational Tournament, a charity golf tournament that generates funds for children’s charities all around the world.  Dalglish was honoured by the University of Ulster with an honorary degree on July 1, 2011 for his contributions to football and charity.
