Lady A (previously known as Lady Antebellum) is a 2006 Nashville, Tennessee-based country music band. Hillary Scott (lead and background vocals), Charles Kelley (lead and background vocals, guitar), and Dave Haywood (lead and background vocals, guitar) are the members of the band (background vocals, guitar, piano, mandolin). Kelly is the brother of pop artist Josh Kelley, and Scott is the daughter of country music singer Linda Davis.
During the George Floyd protests in June 2020, the band abbreviated their name to “Lady A” in an attempt to distance themselves from the name’s associations with slavery and the Antebellum South, resulting in a feud with Anita White, a black blues and gospel singer who had been using the name for more than 20 years.
Before signing with Capitol Nashville, the quartet made their debut as guest vocalists on Jim Brickman’s hit “Never Alone.” Lady A has six Capitol albums: Lady Antebellum, Need You Now, Own the Night, Golden, 747, and Heart Break, as well as one Christmas CD (On This Winter’s Night) and one for BMLG Records: Ocean.
The Recording Industry Association of America has awarded platinum certification to the first three albums (RIAA). On the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts, the albums have yielded sixteen songs, nine of which have reached number one. “Need You Now,” which spent five weeks at number one in 2009, and “Just a Kiss,” which hit number one in 2011 on the Adult Contemporary charts, are the longest-running number one singles.
Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood, and Hillary Scott established Lady Antebellum in Nashville, Tennessee in 2006. Scott is the daughter of Linda Davis, a country music singer best remembered for her duet vocals on Reba McEntire’s 1993 single “Does He Love You,” and Charles Kelley, the brother of pop and country performer Josh Kelley.
Donelson Christian Academy in Donelson, Tennessee, was where Hillary Scott went to school. Kelley relocated to Nashville from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in mid-2005, when he was working in construction with his brother John. Kelley persuaded his old middle-school buddy, Haywood, to go to Nashville from Georgia in 2006 in order to write music with him in the hopes of becoming a successful solo country musician.
Scott recognised Kelley from Myspace shortly after, and the two struck up a conversation in a Nashville music venue. Kelley encouraged Scott to join him and Haywood in the new Lady Antebellum group. The name derives from a photo session in historical costumes at antebellum residences, the band said on the BBC Radio 2 Drivetime Show on August 9, 2010. The Antebellum era in American history refers to the time period before the Civil War in the South.
For the second time (after headlined in 2015), the band headlined the C2C: Country to Country festival in London and Dublin, as well as for the first time in Glasgow in March 2019. The band announced new music and performed two new songs at their London gig on March 9: “What If I Never Get Over You” and “Be Patient With My Love.”
On May 17, 2019, the music video for Big Machine’s first single, “What If I Never Get Over You,” was released. On August 9, 2019, “Pictures,” the second single, was released. On November 15, 2019, Ocean, her eighth studio album, was released. The title track was released on September 20th, 2019. On October 11th, 2019, “Boots” was released. On the same day as the album’s release, the song “What I’m Leaving For” was released. Little Big Town appears on the album as a collaborator.
On April 13, 2020, the group performed on NBC’s Songland and released “Champagne Night.”Lady A was invited to the Grand Ole Opry by Darius Rucker on January 21, 2021, and became the newest members on January 21, 2021.On March 12, 2021, the album “Like A Lady” was released. On April 18, 2021, at the 56th Academy of Country Music Awards, Lady A sang the song live for the first time.
The following day, it was widely reported that Seattle-based African American activist and blues, soul, funk, and gospel singer Anita White had been going by the moniker “Lady A” for more than 20 years. White characterised the band’s admission of ignorance of any past use “pure privilege.”
White described the band’s token awareness of racism while casually borrowing the name of an African American artist in an interview with Rolling Stone: “They’re utilising the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that they consider to be only a blip on the radar. It would have mattered to them before now if it had been important to them. It shouldn’t have taken the death of George Floyd for them to notice that their surname had a slave connotation.
It gives them the chance to act as if they aren’t racists “, Due to the Internet, such name conflicts are rare, according to an experienced music business lawyer. The band members apologised to White the next week for mistakenly co-opting and dominating her name, claiming that the Black Lives Matter movement had encouraged them to be more collaborative. Despite her belief that dual-naming is intrinsically impossible, they required that they keep the same name.
Because the band members did not directly react to that explicit question three times during the conversation or in two contract versions, she remarked, “We talked about attempting to coexist but didn’t address what that might look like”. She quickly countered with a $5 million charge plus a $5 million payment to be split between Seattle charities, a countrywide legal defence fund for independent artists, and Black Lives Matter, in exchange for the band’s renaming or her act’s renaming.
The band filed a lawsuit against White on July 8, 2020, requesting a Nashville court to uphold the name’s long-standing trademark. The following was included in the press release: “We regret to inform you that our heartfelt desire to unite with Anita White in a common cause has come to an end. We have unfortunately come to the conclusion that we must petition a court to affirm our right to continue to use the name Lady A, a trademark we have held for many years, because she and her colleagues have demanded a $10 million payment.”
White filed a counter-suit on September 15, 2020, affirming her claim to the Lady A trademark and dismissing the idea that the two artists could work in the same business under the same brand identification. She’s suing for lost sales and a diminished brand, as well as royalties from any cash the band earns under the Lady A moniker.
Because one of the songs on the album, “A Healing Inside,” identified White as “Lady A,” Spotify temporarily suspended and held Lilli Lewis’s album Americana for review in October 2021. Within a week of Lewis being aware of the situation, the record was put back on streaming.
Lady A has been working with the nonprofit myLIFEspeaks to raise awareness of challenged orphans in Haiti and support them with resources since January 2012. Members of the group also established the LadyAID fund at the start of 2013, with the goal of raising awareness for children who are suffering and unable to help themselves on a local, national, and international level. LadyAID’s main focus is on hospitalised children, primarily in the United States and Canada.
Lady A has received seven more accolades after winning the Country Music Association Awards New Artist of the Year award in 2008, including its first Grammy for Best Country Performance by Duo or Group with Vocals in 2010. Rascal Flatts’ six-year run as Vocal Group of the Year came to an end at the 2009 CMA Awards. The band became the first artist in CMA Award history to win Single of the Year for two years in a row at the 2010 CMA Awards.
The group took home Song of the Year at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. On April 1, 2012, it received the ACM Award for Best Vocal Group. Lady A has worked to commemorate veterans who have returned from duty and made contributions to their communities in addition to being honoured. Lady A honoured eight worthy military families in 2013 by bringing them to intimate concerts and thanking them onstage. The CMT Music Awards in 2020 awarded Lady A Group Video
