Leicester City Football Team is an English professional football club headquartered in Leicester, England. The team is a member of the Premier Competition, England’s highest football league, and plays its home games at the King Power Stadium. The club began as Leicester Fosse F.C. in 1884, and played on a pitch near Fosse Road. In 1891, they relocated to Filbert Street, were accepted into the Football League in 1894, and changed their name to Leicester City in 1919.
In 2002, they relocated to the neighbouring Walkers Stadium, which was renamed King Power Stadium in 2011. Leicester won the Premier League for the first time in 2015–16, becoming one of only seven clubs to do so since the competition began in 1992. Leicester’s title win was dubbed “the greatest sporting shock in history” by several media, and several bookmakers had never paid out at such long odds for any sport.
As a result, the club was given the moniker “The Unbelievables,” a spin-off of Arsenal’s undefeated team “The Invincibles.” The club’s previous best league finish was second in the First Division in 1928–29. Leicester has a joint-record of seven second-tier titles and has appeared in five FA Cup finals, with their first triumph coming in 2021.
In addition, they have won the League Cup three times: in 1962–1963, 1996–1997, and 1999–2000. To date, the club has competed in six European competitions, most recently reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2016–2017. Craig Shakespeare took over as caretaker manager, and Leicester triumphed 3–1 against fifth-placed Liverpool in his debut game in charge, with Vardy scoring a brace.
Shakespeare led Leicester to another 3–1 victory over Hull City in his second encounter as interim manager. The club’s owners determined Shakespeare would stay the club’s manager until the end of the season after two impressive results and generating “the type of positive response that we thought change would bring.”
Leicester qualified for European football for the first time in 15 years in 2016–17. In the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League, Leicester were placed in Group G alongside Porto, Copenhagen, and Club Brugge. They went undefeated in their first five Champions League matches to win their group and advance to the knockout stages.
In the round of 16, the Foxes met La Liga team Sevilla, which they defeated 2–0 on the night and 3–2 on aggregate to advance to the quarter-finals. They played Atlético Madrid in the second leg, drawing 1–1, but losing 2–1 on aggregate after losing 1–0 in the first game. Leicester’s 2016–17 European season came to an end with a quarter-final finish in the Champions League.
Despite the defeat, Leicester’s home record in the 2016–17 Champions League was unblemished.Shakespeare was appointed full-time on a three-year contract after impressing during his caretaker period. He was sacked in October 2017 after four months in command, with Leicester in 18th position in the standings, after a terrible start to the season.
On October 25, 2017, he was replaced by Claude Puel, the former Southampton manager. Leicester was in 8th place in the Premier League by Christmas, and finished one place lower in 9th at the end of the season.Despite rumours that he might quit, Puel stayed at the club for the following season and had a good season.
However, the team had a bad run of games in 2019, losing four consecutive home games, and Puel was sacked on February 24, 2019, with the club in 12th place, following a 4–1 home defeat to Crystal Palace. Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was named as his replacement two days later, on February 26, 2019.
They concluded the season in ninth position once more.Under Rodgers, the 19/20 season got off to a fantastic start, with the club picking up 38 points from their first 16 games and embarking on an eight-match winning streak from October to December. Leicester defeated Southampton 9–0 in the Premier League on October 25, the joint-biggest win in Premier League history and the largest away win in English top flight history.
Despite being in the top four for the majority of the season, Leicester’s form dipped at the end of the season, winning only two of their nine games after league play resumed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. After three defeats in their last four games, they slipped to fifth place in the Premier League, ensuring a place in the Europa League for the next season.
Leicester won its first ever FA Cup on May 15, 2021, after defeating Chelsea 1–0 with to a strike from 25 yards by Youri Tielemans. They had previously lost four FA Cup finals. After finishing fifth in the Premier League in 2020–21, Leicester qualified for the UEFA Europa League in 2021–22, where they were drawn in Group C against Napoli, Spartak Moscow, and Legia Warsaw.
