Letitia Michelle Wright, a Guyanese-born British actress, was born on October 31, 1993. Top Boy, Coming Up, Chasing Shadows, Humans, Doctor Who, and Black Mirror were among her first television appearances. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the latter.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) selected Wright among the 2015 group of BAFTA Breakthrough Brits for her work in the film Urban Hymn, for which she received her breakthrough.

Wright played Shuri, King T’Challa’s sister and Wakandan princess, in the 2018 film Black Panther. Starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira, the film is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.For her work in the film, Wright received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture,and she repeated the character two months later in Avengers: Infinity War.

Wright also starred as Reb in Steven Spielberg’s cinematic adaptation of Ernest Cline’s science-fiction novel Ready Player One, which was released in 2018.  In Drake’s music video for “Nice for What,” Wright appears as one of the cameos. Wright also appeared in The Convert, a play that was performed at the Young Vic theatre in England/London in 2018.

The piece was inspired by a 19th-century English-speaking missionary who taught Africans how to speak Victorian English and how to practise Christianity. Chilford, a Black male catholic teacher and missionary, occupies a mission house in Rhodesian Salisbury in 1895, when the play is set.

Wright portrays a Jekesai, a young Rhodesian girl who is forced to marry by her uncle but is spared by Chilford. Wright was named BAFTA’s Rising Star of the Year in 2019.Wright reprised her role as Shuri in Avengers: Endgame in April 2019, alongside Donald Glover and Rihanna in Guava Island, a short musical film published by Amazon Studios.

Wright and John Boyega will star in a novel adaptation of Hold Back The Stars, which will be released in November 2018.Death on the Nile, which will be released in 2022, will feature Wright. She also appeared in Steve McQueen’s miniseries Small Axe, which was set in London’s West Indian community in the 1960s and 1980s.

Wright plays British Black Panther leader Altheia Jones-LeCointe in the first episode, Mangrove, which broadcast on BBC One on November 15, 2020. Jones-LeCointe was arrested and charged with inciting a riot after a nonviolent protest in 1970, along with eight other Black militants.

The New Yorker commented that Wright’s portrayal of the real-life Jones-LeCointe was marked by “focused fire and emotion.”Wright accepted the role of twin sisters June and Jennifer Gibbons in the film The Silent Twins, based on Marjorie Wallace’s 1986 novel of the same name. She declined film roles so she could focus on her rehabilitation and beliefs.  She later explained that she “wanted a break from acting” and that she “went on a journey to discover my connection with God, and I became a Christian.”

Wright faced backlash in December 2020 after she publicly shared a video on Twitter in which the speaker questioned the safety of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as “appear[ing] sceptical of climate change, accus[ing] China of spreading COVID-19, and making transphobic comments”;YouTube has since removed the video for violating its terms of service.

Wright later emphasised that she “wasn’t against vaccines, but it was essential to ‘ask questions,'” and that “my purpose was not to injure anyone, my ONLY intention of sharing the video was to highlight my worries about what the vaccine contains and what we are putting in our bodies.” She stopped using social media as a result.

Wright and her U.S. team of representatives split up in October 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter, following the outcry over the video and her alleged continuous propagation of anti-vaccine sentiments on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in Atlanta.
