The country music group Little Big Town hails from the United States. Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman (previously Roads), Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook formed the band in 1998 and have remained the same four members since then. Their musical approach is largely influenced by four-part vocal harmonies, with each of the four singers taking turns as lead vocalist.
Little Big Town’s self-titled debut was released on Monument Records in 2002, following a recording contract with Mercury Nashville Records that generated neither singles or albums. Before leaving the label, the group released two small country chart singles. Clint Black’s independent record company, Equity Music Group, signed the group in 2005.
The following year, they published their second album, The Road to Here, which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Their third album, A Place to Land, was originally released by Equity, but was then re-issued by Capitol Nashville after Equity went out of business in 2008. The Reason Why (2010), Tornado (2012), Pain Killer (2014), The Breaker (2017), and Nightfall (2017) were the next five albums released by Capitol (2020).
Their albums produced 24 songs, including the No. 1 singles “Pontoon” and “Better Man,” as well as the top 10 hits “Boondocks,” “Bring It On Home,” “Little White Church,” “Tornado,” and “Day Drinking,” as well as “Girl Crush.”Kimberly Schlapman (formerly Kimberly Bramlett) and Karen Fairchild met in 1987 at Samford University, where they both sang in the school’s vocal ensembles.
Karen Fairchild was a lead singer in a couple of the Christian vocal group Truth’s songs in the mid-1990s. With Leigh Cappillino, she established the KarenLeigh duo (a fellow member of the group “Truth” and who later joined the group Point of Grace). “Save It for a Rainy Day” and “This Love Has” were both produced by KarenLeigh. Fairchild and Schlapman eventually reconnected and began performing together in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1998, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet joined Schlapman and Fairchild. On December 15, 2014, “Girl Crush,” the album’s second single, was released. According to reports, several radio stations have taken “Girl Crush” from their playlists in response to listener concerns that the song’s lyrics are about lesbianism. Fairchild retorted by saying, “That close-mindedness astounds me, especially because that isn’t what the song is about… What if it turned out to be the case? It’s simply a question of appreciating a song for what it is.” Furthermore, the label produced a brief advertisement in which the band discusses the song and its true significance.
The group received five CMA Award nominations on September 9, 2015: Vocal Group of the Year, Album of the Year for Pain Killer, Single of the Year for “Girl Crush,” Music Video of the Year for “Girl Crush,” and Musical Event of the Year for their collaboration on Miranda Lambert’s single “Smokin’ and Drinkin’.” They tied for the most nominations in that year’s awards season with Eric Church. Song of the Year was also awarded to the songwriters of “Girl Crush.”
“Girl Crush” was nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, Song of the Year, and Best Country Song at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Because they did not write “Girl Crush,” Little Big Town was only nominated for Best Country Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
Before the Arizona-Carolina NFC Championship game on January 24, 2016, the band performed the National Anthem. They joined the Boston Pops for their annual Independence Day concert on July 4th of that year. They were featured on “Take Me Down,” a tune on Vince Gill’s fourteenth album, Down to My Last Bad Habit, in February 2016.
Little Big Town returned to the UK in March 2016 as part of the C2C: Country to Country tour, making them one of only four bands to perform at the festival twice (the others being Brantley Gilbert, Sam Hunt, and Carrie Underwood). They headlined the launch party in 2015, announcing the whole lineup and revealing that Underwood, Hunt, and Maddie & Tae would be supporting them.
The band’s seventh studio album, Wanderlust, was released on May 24, 2016. The album was published on June 10, 2016, and it comprises eight songs produced by Pharrell Williams. The record, according to Fairchild, is “It isn’t a country album, and it isn’t anything we’ve ever done before.
It’s wonderful to be spontaneous and share it with the fans just because we want to, rather than overthinking it. It’s provided us a lot of joy, and we believe it will bring them joy as well. What’s the harm in that? We’re trusting our instincts and putting our money where our mouth is. You know, it’s just music.” They’re also working on a country album with Jay Joyce, according to Fairchild.
They played covers of Alicia Keys, Oasis, and Sheryl Crow on an ABC Greatest Hits broadcast from 2000–2005 in July. They were also chosen as one of 30 performers to play on “Forever Country,” a mash-up of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “On the Road Again,” and “I Will Always Love You” commemorating the CMA Awards’ 50th anniversary.
On October 20, 2016, the band released “Better Man,” a song written by Taylor Swift, as the lead single off their upcoming seventh studio album, The Breaker, which will be released on February 24, 2017. Swift wrote the tune, which the band first kept hidden. The music video for the song was released on November 1, 2016, directed by Reid Long and Becky Fluke.
“Happy People,” the band’s lowest-charting single to date, and “When Someone Stops Loving You,” a small top 40 hit, would follow. The band revealed that they would be the first band to ever establish a residency at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Little Big Town announced a six-date UK tour with Seth Ennis, beginning September 28 and ending October 5 in London, before announcing Kacey Musgraves and Midland will join them on the American leg of The Breakers Tour, which would begin in February 2018.
The band announced that they would be headlining the 2018 C2C: Country to Country festival on October 5 during their gig at the Royal Albert Hall, creating history as the first group to headline the festival three times. On June 6, 2018, a standalone song called “Summer Fever” was released. It debuted (and peaked) at number 29 on Country Airplay, making it the band’s best-ever debut. The song also charted in the top 40 on both the Hot Country Songs and the Canada Country charts.
On April 5, 2019, the band released “The Daughters” as the first single off their upcoming ninth album, Nightfall, which they self-produced. On January 17, 2020, it was published. “The Daughters” debuted at number 29 on the Hot Country Songs list, however due to a lack of radio promotion, it did not chart on Country Airplay. “Over Drinking,” the second song from Nightfall, was released on September 8, 2019. The band will also embark on a 30-city theatre tour with Caitlyn Smith, which will kick off the day before the album’s release at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
