Liverpool Football Team is a professional football club based in Liverpool, England, that competes in the Premier League, English football’s highest division. In the domestic league, the team has won nineteen league titles, seven FA Cups, an unprecedented eight League Cups, and fifteen FA Community Shields.

The club has won six European Cups, more than any other English club, three UEFA Cups, four UEFA Super Cups (also English records), and one FIFA Club World Cup in foreign competitions. The team was founded in 1892, joined the Football League the following year, and has played at Anfield ever since.

When Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, and Kenny Dalglish led Liverpool to a combined eleven League titles and four European Cups in the 1970s and 1980s, the club established itself as a dominant power in English and European football. Under the direction of Rafael Bentez and Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool won two more European Cups in 2005 and 2019, respectively; the latter led Liverpool to their nineteenth Premier League title in 2020, the club’s first in the Premier League era.

Liverpool is one of the most popular and valuable football clubs in the world. Manchester United and Everton have always been rivals of Liverpool. The squad switched from red shirts and white shorts to an all-red home uniform in 1964, and has worn it ever since. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is the club’s anthem.

Supporters of the club have been engaged in two significant tragedies. The Heysel Stadium incident in Brussels in 1985 resulted in 39 deaths when evacuating crowds were forced against a falling wall during the European Cup Final. The majority of those involved were Italians and Juventus supporters, and as a result, English clubs were barred from European competition for five years.

Following the Hillsborough incident in 1989, in which 97 Liverpool fans perished in a crush against perimeter fencing, gated standing terraces were phased out of English football’s top two tiers in favour of all-seater stadiums. Liverpool’s rivalry with Manchester United dates back to the 19th century, when the two cities competed in the Industrial Revolution.

By road, Liverpool and Manchester are separated by approximately 30 miles (48 km) along the East Lancs Road, which is connected by the world’s first inter-city train.Liverpool and Manchester United are the most successful English teams in both domestic and international competitions, according to France Football magazine, and both clubs have a global support.

It

is considered the most famous match in English football and is regarded as one of the biggest rivalries in the world.  Between 1964 and 1967, the two clubs alternated as champions, with Manchester United becoming the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968, followed by Liverpool’s four European Cup wins.

Despite the fact that the two clubs have won 39 league titles and nine European Cups between them, they have rarely been successful at the same time – Liverpool’s title run in the 1970s and 1980s coincided with Manchester United’s 26-year title drought, and United’s success in the Premier League era likewise coincided with Liverpool’s 30-year title drought, and the two clubs have only finished first and second in the league five times.

Because of the teams’ animosity, they rarely do business with each other in terms of transfers. Phil Chisnall, who joined Liverpool from Manchester United in 1964, was the last player to move between the two clubs. The first episode of the BBC’s Match of the Day aired highlights of Liverpool’s match against Arsenal at Anfield on August 22, 1964.

In March 1967, a match between Liverpool and West Ham United was shown live on television for the first time in colour. Liverpool fans were featured in the Pink Floyd song “Fearless,” in which they sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” snippets.  Liverpool published the “Anfield Rap,” a song featuring John Barnes and other members of the squad, to commemorate the club’s appearance in the 1988 FA Cup Final.

Jimmy McGovern wrote a docudrama about the Hillsborough disaster, which was shown in 1996. Trevor Hicks, who lost two teenage daughters in the catastrophe and went on to lobby for safer stadiums and help found the Hillsborough Families Support Group, was played by Christopher Eccleston.

Liverpool was featured in the 2001 film The 51st State, in which ex-hitman Felix DeSouza (Robert Carlyle) is a die-hard fan of the team, and the last scene takes place during a Liverpool-Manchester United match. Scully, a 1984 children’s television show about a little kid who tries out for Liverpool, also featured the club.

The Doctor Who episode’s opening sequences “The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) exits the TARDIS outside Anfield in “The Halloween Apocalypse,” which broadcast in October 2021, exclaiming, “Liverpool? Anfield! Klopp’s era was a classic!” Since the club’s inception in 1892, 45 players have held the position of club captain for Liverpool F.C.

After Liverpool split from Everton and founded its own club, Andrew Hannah became the club’s first captain. Alex Raisbeck, who led the club from 1899 to 1909, held the record for the longest tenured captain before being surpassed by Steven Gerrard, who led Liverpool for 12 seasons beginning in the 2003–04 season. The current captain is Jordan Henderson, who took over from Steven Gerrard after he went to the LA Galaxy in the 2015–16 season.
