Victoria Loren Kelly, an American singer and composer, was born on December 14, 1992. She rose to prominence after posting videos on YouTube as a teen, and she went on to win American Idol’s ninth season in 2010. Following that, in 2012, she self-released Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly, her first self-produced EP.
Kelly signed with Capitol Records in 2013, soon after Scooter Braun became her manager. Soon after, she released Foreword (2013), her second EP and first major-label release. Kelly’s debut studio album Unbreakable Smile (2015) reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, with the lead single “Nobody Love” becoming her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Kelly was nominated for Best New Artist at the 58th Grammy Awards, and she portrayed Meena in the animated feature Sing (2016), which she reprises in Sing 2 in 2021. Hiding Place (2018), her second studio album, reached number 35 on the Billboard 200 chart and won two Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song, respectively.
Kelly’s third studio album, Inspired by True Events, was released in 2019, followed by A Tori Kelly Christmas, her first Christmas album, in 2020. Kelly is a California native who was born in the town of Wildomar. Allwyn, her father, is of Jamaican and Puerto Rican origin, while Laura, her mother, is of Irish and German background.
Noah, her younger sibling, is her only sibling. Her parents introduced her to a wide range of music when she was younger. When asked about her upbringing, she replied, “I give them a lot of credit for just playing all kinds of genres, and no genre was off bounds.” Kelly professes to be a devout follower of Jesus Christ. Though she does not consider herself to be a Christian musician, faith has a role in her songs.
Kelly competed on Star Search, but was defeated by vocalist Tiffany Evans, who was named Junior Champion in the junior singer division.She won America’s Most Talented Kids in 2004 by performing Christina Aguilera’s “Keep on Singin’ My Song” over guitarist Hunter Hayes. In the Tournament of Champions, she made a second appearance on the show, but lost to rock musician Antonio Pontarelli.
Kelly signed a record deal with Geffen Records when she was twelve years old, but the two sides chose to part ways owing to creative differences. Kelly, who was 14 years old at the time, started uploading films to YouTube in 2007. She published her first video in December 2004, which was a version of John Wesley Work Jr.’s “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” Kelly rose to prominence after recording an acoustic cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” with a YouTuber named Angie Girl.
Despite failing to make the top 24 on American Idol, she shifted gears in her career, learning to play the guitar, writing original song pieces, and recording them on her computer. Tori began uploading her performances to YouTube and quickly amassed a following of over one million people. Tori auditioned for Season 9 of American Idol in Denver, Colorado in 2010, and made it to Hollywood Week, but she did not make it to the “Top 24” performers.
She had professed to be ‘devastated,’ but she had given everything she had. Following that, she was asked to participate in “We Are the World: The Next Generation,” a youth version of the 1985 charity song “We Are the World.” Tori Kelly published her debut EP, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly, on her own label, Toraay Records, on May 1, 2012. Kelly wrote, produced, engineered, and recorded the EP in her bedroom all by herself.
The EP debuted in the Top 10 Pop Albums list on iTunes shortly after its release. The EP was billed as a “warm-up” for a full-length album to be released later.  It reached number nine on the US Heatseekers Albums chart in 2013, with over 14,000 copies sold. Kelly released the single “Fill a Heart” in February 2013 as part of ConAgra Foods’ and Feeding America’s “Child Hunger Ends Here” campaign.
Later, on Dancing With the Stars, British boy band The Wanted performed the song. Kelly’s “Fill a Heart” tour began in April 2013 and took her to eight locations across the continental United States. During the day, she volunteered at local food banks. She’s played at Los Angeles’ Troubador and Roxy, New York’s Gramercy Theater, and London’s Bush Hall. Teen Vogue, Elle, and Glamour have all published stories about her.
Scooter Braun, Kelly’s new manager, introduced her to Capitol Records’ top executives in mid-2013. She had been “very hesitant” about joining with a major record company, fearful that things would not work out. “I’d had my fair share of bad luck in the past. But I’d never felt that way until meeting those guys: they were supporters who truly understood me.” She signed with Capitol Records on September 6, 2013.
She was named Elvis Duran’s Artist of the Month in September 2013, and she performed her single “Dear No One” live on NBC’s Today show, presented by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. On The Today Show, Kelly confirmed that her major label debut, Foreword, would be released on Capitol Records on October 22, 2013. The EP sold over 16,000 copies by the end of November, and it debuted at number 16 on the Billboard 200 in the United States.
On November 1, 2013, Kelly performed as Ed Sheeran’s lone support act at Madison Square Garden, and in October 2014, she accompanied Sam Smith on their In the Lonely Hour UK tour. Kelly composed and recorded “Silent” for The Giver: Music Collection, which was published on iTunes on August 5, 2014, in support of the film version (The Giver) of the novel The Giver.
Kelly released a live acoustic version of the song on her YouTube channel on August 7, 2014, which has accumulated over 2.6 million views as of October 2015. Kelly was featured on Professor Green’s song “Lullaby,” which was released on September 14, 2014 in the United Kingdom.The song reached number four on the UK Singles Chart, making it Kelly’s first UK top ten hit.
Kelly appeared on Pentatonix’s album That’s Christmas to Me, which was released in October 2014, on the medley “Winter Wonderland”/”Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Tori Kelly was named one of MTV’s “Artists To Watch” on December 1, 2014. She recorded two songs for MTV in private: “Funny” and “Dear No One,” which are both available on her Artist To Watch profile.
For several weeks, MTV broadcasted her “Funny” performance. Kelly worked on her debut album with Braun throughout 2014, with Toby Gad, Max Martin, and Ed Sheeran contributing. On February 8, 2015, “Nobody Love,” the album’s first single, was released. It was co-written by Tori Kelly, Rickard Goransson, and Max Martin.
At the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, Kelly gave a performance of “Nobody Love.” Unbreakable Smile was released on June 23, 2015, and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. At the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, Kelly performed “Should’ve Been Us.” On the We Love Disney CD in October 2015, Kelly sang the Pocahontas song “Colors of the Wind.”
The first single from Unbreakable Smile’s new edition, “Hollow,” was released on October 22, 2015.In the same month, Kelly signed on as a brand ambassador for William Rast, Justin Timberlake’s clothing label. Kelly was nominated for the 58th Grammy Awards in the category of Best New Artist in late 2015. She shared the stage with James Bay, an English vocalist.
She made history by becoming the first singer to perform a Christian pop song at the GrammysAmy Grant’s 1991 single “Baby Baby” was revised by Kelly, who collaborated with Grant on the track. The song was released on April 29, 2016, to commemorate its 25th anniversary, while Kelly was still 23.  Kelly made her feature film debut as Meena the elephant in the animated film Sing (2016).
On the one-month anniversary of Christina Grimmie’s death during a meet-and-greet at The Plaza Live in Orlando, Florida, while on tour with Before You Exit, Kelly released an original song “Blink of an Eye” to honour her friend. Kelly opened for Soundgarden at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee on May 7, 2017, in what would be one of the band’s final performances before leader Chris Cornell took his own life on May 17.
Kelly was featured on the tune “I’ll Find You,” which was released on June 9 by Kelly and rapper Lecrae. On July 28, 2017, the accompanying music video debuted. Kelly and Lecrae sing over a black backdrop, with numerous St. Jude Hospital patients. It charted at No. 11 on Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop, No. 1 on Hot Christian Songs, and No. 17 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100.
She also worked on Chris Lane’s track “Take Back Home Girl,” which reached No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kelly and basketball star André Murillo got engaged in September 2017. Kelly’s second studio album, Help Us to Love, was released on March 30, 2018, with the lead track “Help Us to Love,” featuring the HamilTones. In an Instagram post on May 20, 2018, she revealed that she and Murillo had married.
Kelly announced on her personal Instagram account on August 23 that her album, Hiding Place, will be released on September 14th. On August 24, the album’s second single, “Never Alone,” debuted. Kelly announced a tour to promote the record on September 7th. At the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, the album was named Best Gospel Album, and the song “Never Alone” was named Best Gospel Performance/Song.
Kelly confirmed on January 18, 2019, that she will go on The Acoustic Sessions tour, which will kick off in February. Tickets for her upcoming third studio album, Change Your Mind, went on sale on January 25, coinciding with the release of her new lead track. Kelly confirmed on June 26, 2019, that her third studio album Inspired by True Events will be released on August 9, 2019, and that the album’s first track “Sorry Would Go a Long Way” will be released on June 28.
Kelly dropped the first track from her upcoming EP Solitude, a version of Drake’s “Time Flies,” on July 22, 2020. Kelly released the second single, “Unbothered,” on August 11, three days before the EP’s release. On August 14, Kelly published her third EP, Solitude, which has four original songs she penned while quarantined during the coronavirus outbreak.
Kelly was featured on Jacob Collier’s “Running Outta Love,” the sixth song from his album Djesse Vol. 3, which was released on July 30, 2020. On August 3, a version was made available for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Kelly stated on October 7 that she would be releasing a Christmas album called A Tori Kelly Christmas on October 30.
Eight Christmas classics are covered on the album, one of which features Babyface, who also serves as a producer, and two originals are included. Two bonus tracks were published exclusively at Target, one of which was an original and the other was a version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Kelly appeared as “Seahorse” in season 4 of The Masked Singer in late 2020.
Kelly advanced to the competition’s semi-finals before being unmasked in a triple elimination with Chloe Kim as “Jellyfish” and Taylor Dayne as “Popcorn” in a triple elimination. Kelly covered “Waving Through a Window” for the soundtrack CD of Justin Goldner’s 2021 film adaption of Dear Evan Hansen.The Curly Girl Blues, her debut novel, was released on November 2, 2021.
