Andrew Austen Luck (born September 12, 1989) was an American football quarterback who spent seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). During his time at Stanford, he was considered one of the most highly anticipated amateur prospects. In 2011, Luck was named an All-American for the second time and awarded the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award. He was chosen first overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, following his collegiate success.
Luck made an immediate impact as a rookie, setting rookie records for passing yards in a season and game while leading the Colts to an 11–5 record and a playoff appearance after going 2–14 the previous season. In his next two seasons, after establishing himself as a dual-threat quarterback, he led Indianapolis to consecutive AFC South division titles. During the 2013–14 NFL playoffs, Luck engineered the NFL’s second-largest playoff comeback and led the Colts to the AFC Championship Game the following season.
During his first three years, he was named to the Pro Bowl, and in 2014, he led the league in passing touchdowns.Luck suffered injuries throughout the next three seasons, which forced him to miss the whole 2017 season. The following season, he returned to form, setting career highs in attempts, completions, completion %, and passer rating while helping the Colts return to the playoffs. Luck was named Comeback Player of the Year and was selected to his fourth Pro Bowl as a result of his accomplishments.
Luck, however, retired prior of the 2019 season due to injuries experienced. He is regarded as one of the best professional players to leave the game when still in their prime. Washington, D.C., is where Luck was born. to Kathy and Oliver Luck, the former XFL commissioner, former NCAA executive vice president for regulatory affairs, former West Virginia University quarterback (as well as athletic director), and former Houston Oilers quarterback. He was reared as a Roman Catholic and was active in the youth organisation of his church.
Andrew spent his early years in London and Frankfurt, Germany, where he attended Frankfurt International School, where Oliver Luck was the general manager of two World League of American Football teams before becoming the league’s president. He is the eldest of four siblings: Mary Ellen, Emily, and Addison. Mary Ellen is a Stanford volleyball graduate, Emily is a current Stanford student, and Addison grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia before their father’s job relocated them to the Indianapolis region. Andrew went to The American School in London when he lived in the city.
He is a soccer aficionado as a result of his upbringing in London. “I try to support as many of the American fellows playing [in the Premier League] as possible,” Luck remarked, despite the fact that followers of London clubs Arsenal and Tottenham approached him, mistaking him for a fellow fan. Because his father was the club’s founding president and general manager, the Houston Dynamo was Luck’s “number one team in my heart.”
However, both head coach Frank Reich and Luck stated that the decision was made solely due to Brissett’s superior throwing arm. Luck had a career-high in completions (40), attempts (62), and yards the following week against the Houston Texans (464). In the third quarter, he led the Colts back from a 28–10 deficit, including a game-tying two-point convert with 51 seconds remaining. However, the club was defeated in overtime, 37–34, after the Texans kicked the game-winning field goal after Indianapolis failed to convert a 4th and 4 on their own 43.
He was 38-of-59 for 365 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in Week 5 against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football, as the Colts were defeated 38–24. In Weeks 4–5, Luck threw 121 times, the most in NFL history in a two-game span. He threw 301 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions in a 42–34 loss to the New York Jets in Week 6. Luck and the Colts went on a five-game winning streak after a 0–5 start to the season. In a 37–5 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 7, he threw for 156 yards and four touchdowns.
He passed for three touchdowns in each of the next two games, wins against the Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars. In a 38–10 win over the Titans in Week 11, Luck completed 23 of 29 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns, good for a 143.8 passer rating. Luck had his eighth straight game with at least three passing touchdowns in a 27–24 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 12. Luck led a double-digit comeback against the New York Giants in Week 16, his 21st fourth-quarter comeback, throwing a go-ahead touchdown to Chester Rogers with 55 seconds left and winning 28–27.
The win put the Colts in a position to face the Titans the following week for a chance to earn a Wild Card playoff berth. Luck also broke his own record for single-season completions in the game, surpassing his previous high of 380 in 2014. The Colts defeated the Titans, clinching a Wild Card berth and winning nine of their final ten games of the season. Luck has 4,593 yards passing, 39 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions in his first season back from injury.
In the Wild Card Round, Luck and the Colts defeated the defending AFC South champion Houston Texans 21–7. Luck had 222 yards passing, two touchdowns, and one interception in the win.
