In the 1970s, the firm began producing electric guitars. B.C. Rich became well-known in the next decade as heavy metal became increasingly popular, and he has since been associated with the genre. Ron Estrada custom-crafted the high-end B.C. Rich instruments in the United States, while the mid- and low-end versions were constructed in various Asian nations. In the 1990s, the firm changed hands briefly until being purchased by Hanser Music Group, a distribution corporation located in Hebron, Kentucky, in the 2000s. Until 2018, B.C Rich was licenced to Praxis Musical in Orange, California.

The pickups were originally Gibsons that had been rewired as four-conductor and potted. Guild pickups were later processed in the same way. Sergio Zuica invented unique adjustable-pole humbucker pickups for various bespoke guitar models in 1974–1975, and several production bass guitars from 1975 to 1982. DiMarzio agreed to construct wax-potted, four-conductor pickups for B.C. Rich in 1975, and they were utilised until the late 1980s, when B.C. Rich began creating their own pickups. Neal Moser was hired to develop and manage the electronics in the early 1970s. A wire harness with coil taps, a phase switch, a Varitone, and a defeatable active preamp were among his contributions (or two in some models) Serial numbers used to be a stamped six-digit number that began with the year and ended with the production number (500037 would be the 37th guitar built in 1975). This is something that most BCR serialisation references overlook. Beginning in 1976, the numbers began with the year, followed by the number of units produced. Since more than 1000 guitars were created over a long period of time, the figures were more incorrect through the 1980s, eventually falling nearly four years behind (i.e. a 88xxx serial number guitar would have been built in 1984). Because of the sharp top tip and the sharp lower tip that bit into the leg while seated, the Seagull form proved unpleasant for some to play. It was altered multiple times, including a smoother lower point, a Junior version with simpler electronics, and finally a meaningless version that is extremely uncommon. Finally, it took on the shape of an Eagle with no sharp points.

Johnny “Go-Go” Kessel created the Mockingbird model. Joe Perry of Aerosmith popularised the song. After playing one on the Use Your Illusion world tour, Guns N’ Roses lead guitarist Slash gave the Mockingbird a new lease of life in the early 1990s. Megadeth’s David Ellefson used a Mockingbird bass during the band’s early years. Neal Moser, a subcontractor for Bernie Rico (B.C. Rich) from 1974 until 1985, designed the B.C. Rich “Bich” ten-string guitar. Moser developed, planned, and constructed the first Bich prototype while working for B.C. Rich. B.C. Rich never owned the design, instead licencing it from Moser. The “Rich Bich” was presented as a custom-order model at the NAMM Show in 1978. The Bich had a traditional six-string headstock for the primary strings, with machine heads tuning the four extra strings in the body, past the tailpiece, with a huge angled slot providing access to the tuners. This unconventional body form also negated coursed electric guitars’ normal inclination to be head-heavy due to the weight of the multiple machine heads.
