The Ball State Cardinals are a collegiate football team that competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for Ball State University. The head coach is Mike Neu. Ball State’s home games are held at Scheumann Stadium on the Ball State University campus in Muncie, Indiana. The Cardinals are a member of the West Division of the Mid-American Conference.
The Cardinals have a 421–381–32 record, which puts them in the bottom half of NCAA FBS teams in terms of wins. From 1937 until 1956, Ball State was categorised as a teacher’s college and competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). They were categorised as a Small College school in 1957 and remained such until 1972. Ball State was assigned to Division II in 1973, then to Division I-AA in 1975 and Division I-A (now FBS) in 1981, before slipping to Division I-AA for one season (1982) before returning to Division I-A.
From 1970 to 1972, the Midwestern Conference, sometimes known as the Conference of Midwestern Universities, was a college athletic conference that operated in Illinois and Indiana. It was made up of schools that had just transitioned from the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division II (then known as the College Division) to Division I (then known as the University Division) (NCAA). The league supported only men’s sports; awarded championships in baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, swimming, tennis, indoor & outdoor track and field, and wrestling.
In the fall of 1970, the inaugural conference championship was held in cross country. Southern Illinois won that championship, as well as championships in basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, tennis, and both indoor and outdoor track, almost completing a complete sweep. The only team to avoid a sweep was Ball State, who won the golf championship that spring.
A conference had to have six or more member colleges to be recognised by the NCAA at the time (and this is still the situation today). The Midwestern Conference only had five members and couldn’t locate a sixth, therefore it folded after only two years. Other conferences eventually affiliated with the five member colleges.Jack McClelland, the former Drake Bulldogs basketball coach and athletic director, was named conference commissioner after resigning as commissioner of the North Central Conference to accept the position with the Midwestern Conference.
The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is a Division I collegiate sports conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that spans the Great Lakes region from Western New York to Illinois. In Ohio and Michigan, nine of the twelve full member schools are situated, with single members in Illinois, Indiana, and New York. The MAC is a member of the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision in football.
In men’s swimming and diving, the Missouri State Bears, Evansville Purple Aces, and Southern Illinois Salukis compete. The West Virginia Mountaineers became a men’s soccer affiliate in 2012, joining the Florida Atlantic Owls and Hartwick College Hawks. Florida Atlantic departed upon entering Conference USA in 2013. Hartwick’s contract was not renewed by the MAC in 2015.
The MAC has nine wrestling affiliates, the majority of which were formed when the defunct Eastern Wrestling League was acquired by the MAC in 2019. In field hockey, Appalachian State University and Longwood University are associate members; Missouri State was a member from 2005 until it dropped the sport after the 2016 season. Binghamton University is an affiliate in men’s tennis. In June 2017, SIU Edwardsville (SIUE) was asked to become an affiliate member in both men’s soccer and wrestling in 2018.
When Buffalo suddenly abandoned four sports, including men’s soccer, SIUE’s move in that sport was made immediately. The UMass Minutemen joined the MAC as a football-only member in July 2012, however owing to contractual concerns, the team was forced to leave at the end of the 2015 season. Meanwhile, Temple ended its affiliation with the MAC in football and joined the Big East for football in July 2012.
Following the separation of the Big East into football-sponsoring and non-football leagues in July 2013, Temple became a full member of the football-sponsoring portion, the American Athletic Conference, ending its membership in the Atlantic 10 at that time. The Chicago State Cougars were a men’s tennis affiliate until July 2013, when they joined the Western Athletic Conference, which supports the sport.
In November 2019, the conference announced the addition of women’s lacrosse to its sport sponsorship. Lacrosse began competing under the MAC umbrella with six teams in the 2021 season with MAC members Akron, Central Michigan and Kent State joined by associate members Detroit Mercy, Robert Morris, and Youngstown State. Eastern Michigan will bring the league up to seven members after it adds women’s lacrosse for the 2022 season One associate member departed the MAC on July 1, 2017, while another discontinued one of its two MAC sports and two new institutions joined as associate members.
Northern Iowa wrestling transferred from the Mid-American Conference to the Big 12. Missouri State discontinued field hockey, but men’s swimming and diving remained a MAC member. In field hockey, Appalachian State joined the MAC, while in men’s soccer, SIU Edwardsville (SIUE) joined. SIUE was initially expected to join both men’s soccer and wrestling in 2018, but the league revealed that SIUE men’s soccer would join immediately less than a week after the first announcement. SIUE wrestling began on the previously scheduled date.
The MAC announced on March 5, 2019, that it would add seven former Eastern Wrestling League members as affiliate members in wrestling, making the MAC the second largest wrestling conference for the 2019-2020 academic year.In the 2020–21 academic year, the MAC welcomed affiliate members Detroit Mercy, Robert Morris, and Youngstown State with the inclusion of women’s lacrosse. At the same time as the MAC announced the addition of lacrosse, UDM and YSU, both all-sports members of the Horizon League, were announced as incoming partners.
RMU was named as an incoming associate in late June 2020, just a few weeks after the school declared its intention to join the Horizon League in July 2020. SIUE stated in June 2020 that it would leave the MAC men’s soccer league in 2021 and return to the Missouri Valley Conference, where it had previously played. It will remain in MAC wrestling. Also in 2021, Missouri left MAC wrestling and returned to its former home of the Big 12 Conference as a wrestling-only member.
Three colleges joined the MAC as single-sport members at the same time: Bellarmine in field hockey and Georgia Southern and Georgia State in men’s soccer. West Virginia men’s soccer will leave the MAC in 2022 to join Conference USA as a single-sport member. However, due to the shaky future of C-USA, which has confirmed that nine of its 14 full-time members will be transferred to other leagues by 2023, this move has become unclear. When the Sun Belt Conference reinstates men’s soccer in 2023, Georgia Southern and Georgia State will leave the MAC.
Ball State has played in eight NCAA Division I playoff bowl games and has a 1–7 record in those games.Until the 2020 Arizona Bowl, Ball State was one of eight FBS teams that have never won a sanctioned bowl game. Throughout the program’s existence, the Cardinals have had 17 different head coaches. John Magnabosco holds the record for most victories in the program’s history with 68, followed by Paul Schudel (60) and Dave McClain (58). The MAC accorded rivalry status to Ball State and Miami in 2017.
Every year, the cross-division rivals compete for the Red Bird Rivalry trophy. Since 1927, BSU has been known as the Cardinals, whereas Miami has been known as the RedHawks since 1997. The series began in 1931, but it became particularly intense in the 1970s when BSU joined the MAC. Since the Bronze Stalk Trophy’s inception, the Cardinals have faced Northern Illinois six times in football. The trophy features several cornstalks as a nod to the prevalence of maize in the rivals’ respective home states.
Through the 2019 season, Northern Illinois leads the series 24–21–2. A total of 27 NFL draught picks have come from Ball State. Past and present Ball State University football players who have competed in the National Football League, the Canadian Football League, and the Arena Football League are included in the “Active” and “All-Star” lists below.
