Bayer was promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in 1979 and has stayed there ever since. Red and black are the club’s primary colours, with red and black stripes serving as home colours as well. Bayer Leverkusen has finished second in the Bundesliga five times without winning it, which is a German football record. A DFB-Pokal and a UEFA Cup have both been won by the club.

In the 2001–02 UEFA Champions League, Bayer finished second, losing 2–1 in the final against Real Madrid. Their main competitors in the area are: 1. Kölner Football Club SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen had worked its way into the top half of the league table by the mid-1980s, and by the end of the decade, it was well-established there.

In 1984, the two parts of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen e.V. re-united after a half-century apart. Red and white were the colours chosen for the new club.A remarkable victory in the 1988 UEFA Cup gave the club its first honours, in addition to becoming a well-established Bundesliga team.

After falling behind 0–3 to Espanyol in the first leg of the final, Bayer Leverkusen drew level in the second leg before winning 3–2 on penalties. Reiner Calmund, a long-serving executive at Bayer Leverkusen, was named general manager of the club the following year. Calmund ushered in a decade and a half of the club’s greatest accomplishments through astute, far-sighted player purchases, and this is considered one of the most crucial transactions in the club’s history.

Two years later, the club lost a five-point lead at the top of the league table by losing two of its last three matches, while Borussia Dortmund raced ahead with three consecutive victories in its last game. The “Treble Horror” of the 2002 season was termed “Neverkusen” when Bayer Leverkusen lost the DFB-Pokal final 4–2 to Schalke 04 and the UEFA Champions League final 2–1 to Real Madrid.

Without ever having won a national championship, Leverkusen became the first team to reach the final of the Champions League. Some people believe Bayer Leverkusen has a different kind of image problem. Despite being a financially sound club with a pool of talented players, many traditional football supporters dismiss Bayer Leverkusen as a “plastic club” with no traditions or a loyal fan base, operating mainly to benefit their wealthy pharmaceutical sponsor, Bayer AG.

As

a result, the club and its supporters have begun to proudly proclaim their industrial roots, referring to themselves as “Werkself” (English: “factory team,” “Millhanders”) or “Pillendreher” (Eng. “Tablet twisters”). The corporate history of Bayer Leverkusen, on the other hand, is far from unique. Other clubs with a similar reputation as work teams include PSV, Carl Zeiss Jena, and Sochaux.

Unlike the different Red Bull clubs (Salzburg, New York, and Leipzig), which were formed or redefined in the recent past primarily for commercial purposes, Bayer Leverkusen was founded in the early twentieth century with the goal of improving the living conditions of local industry employees.

In recognition of this legacy, UEFA permits Bayer Leverkusen to use the Bayer brand name in European club tournaments while prohibiting other clubs from doing so, most notably Red Bull Salzburg. In March 2020, the four German UEFA Champions League teams for the 2019/20 season, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and RB Leipzig, provided a total of €20 million to Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga teams that were financially strained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wilhelm Hauschild addressed a letter to his employer, Friedrich Bayer and Co., on November 27, 1903, asking for their support in forming a sports club. The letter was signed by 170 of his coworkers.  The firm agreed to back the project, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen Turn- und Spielverein was created on July 1, 1904.

On May 31, 1907, the club established a separate football division.  There was a lot of hatred between gymnasts and other types of athletes in the German sports culture at the time. This eventually led to a split within the club: on June 8, 1928, the footballers founded Sportvereinigung Bayer 04 Leverkusen, which also included handball and fistball players, athletics, and boxing, while the gymnasts continued to compete as TuS Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The gymnasts wore blue and yellow, whereas the SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen wore red and black.
