Baylor University’s football team competes in Division I FBS collegiate football. The Big 12 Conference is their home. After 64 years at off-campus Baylor Stadium, which was renamed Floyd Casey Stadium in 1989, the Bears moved to McLane Stadium on campus for the 2014 season. Following a ban against football violence in 1906, no team was fielded; 1906 is one of three seasons since 1899 in which Baylor has not competed in varsity football, the others being 1943 and 1944 (during World War II). In 1907, Luther Burleson led the reconstituted football team to a 4–3–1 record.
For the 1908 and 1909 seasons, E.J. Mills was the team’s coach; their 3–5–0 and 5–3–0 records were memorable for the team’s 1908 loss to LSU and the world’s first “Homecoming” at the 1909 Thanksgiving Day game, which featured a concert, parade, and bonfire. Baylor still holds the record for hosting the world’s largest homecoming procession.
The Battle of the Brazos (until 2011 when Texas A&M departed the Big 12), membership in the historic Southwest Conference, a live bear mascot since 1915, and the Baylor Line are just a few of Baylor’s traditions. When John Hill Westbrook of Elgin, Texas joined the Baylor squad in 1966, he became the first African American to play varsity football in the Southwest Conference.
Baylor’s 2012 season began with a game versus the SMU Mustangs in Waco. Quarterback Nick Florence, now a senior, guided the Bears to a 59–24 victory over Texas Tech in 2011 after Griffin III left with a concussion. Two weeks later, a win over No. 2 FCS Sam Houston State at home gave Baylor fans their first taste of what was to come when Oregon transfer running back Lache Seastrunk, who joined the game late in the fourth quarter, scored a 15-yard touchdown rush to put Baylor up 41–23.
Baylor next flew to Louisiana-Monroe to play a Warhawk squad that had just beaten No. 8 Arkansas and taken Auburn to overtime. Baylor’s 9th straight win (at the time, the 2nd longest streak in the FBS) earned the Bears a No. 24 ranking. The win run was snapped by a No. 7 rated Mountaineer team playing in their first Big 12 conference game on Baylor’s first trip to Morgantown, West Virginia. Several Big 12 records were set in the 70–63 shootout, including Baylor receiver Terrance Williams’ single-game receiving record (314 yards).
Baylor was knocked out of the rankings after the loss, which started a four-game losing streak that included losses to TCU in Waco, No. 25 Texas, and Iowa State. A win over Kansas at home and a loss at No. 12 The Bears were left scrambling for bowl eligibility after losing to Oklahoma. The next week, Baylor stunned the college football world by defeating No. 1 Kansas State 52–24 in Waco. Baylor took a 14–7 lead in the first quarter on a 12-yard Florence touchdown run.
Despite having a quadriceps cramp near middle during the OSU game, Seastrunk was honoured for a 76-yard touchdown rush, outrunning the Oklahoma State defenders. Baylor’s 7–5 2012 season marks the first time the Bears had three consecutive seasons with seven wins or more since 1949–51. Baylor accepted a berth in the Holiday Bowl on December 2, making it the first time in programme history that the Bears had played in three consecutive bowl games.
After leaping out to a 21–0 lead early in the second quarter, Baylor handily defeated the No. 17-ranked UCLA Bruins in the Holiday Bowl on December 27, 2012 by a final score of 49–26. Lache Seastrunk (RB) and Chris McAllister (DE) were selected as the game’s Offensive and Defensive Players, respectively.
Baylor had one of its strongest regular seasons in school history in 2013. The Bears were ranked No. 3 in the AP Poll after a best-ever 9–0 start. After a road defeat to Oklahoma State, the Bears needed victories in their next two games plus an Oklahoma State loss to have a chance to win the Big 12 title outright. With the Cowboys’ loss, Baylor’s season-ending game versus Texas — the final game at Floyd Casey Stadium — was dubbed the Big 12 championship game. Baylor beat Texas 30–10 for a school-record 11th victory and its first outright conference title since 1980.
It also guaranteed the Bears a trip in the Fiesta Bowl, the team’s first BCS bowl game and first major bowl appearance in 33 years. Baylor was defeated 52–42 by the University of Central Florida in the Fiesta Bowl. The Bears’ quarterback, Bryce Petty, finished seventh in the overall 2013–14 Heisman Trophy race in New York, becoming Baylor’s second Heisman Trophy candidate in the last three record-breaking seasons.
Following the season, Petty was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. A sexual assault scandal rocked Baylor from 2012 to 2016, leading to the removal of head coach Art Briles, as well as the resignations of Athletic Director Ian McCaw, University President Kenneth Starr, and Title IX coordinator Patty Crawford.
The Big 12 Conference withheld $6 million from Baylor’s annual award until the university could demonstrate that reforms had been made. The Texas Ranger Division announced in March 2017 that it had initiated a “preliminary investigation” into whether the institution or the Waco Police Department had breached any laws. U.S. District Judge Robert L. Pitman dismissed certain allegations in a lawsuit against the university on March 7, 2017, but allowed others to proceed. Following Rhule’s departure to the Panthers in January 2020, Baylor signed former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.
Aranda had a 2–7 record in its debut season, including wins over Kansas (0–9) and Kansas State (4–6).Baylor beat Oklahoma State 21-16 in the Big 12 Championship Game on December 4, 2021. Coach Dave Aranda accepted responsibility for the team’s contentious choice to go for the first down on a 4th-and-1 at their own 36-yard line. The Oklahoma State rally was sparked by a failed convert. Coach Aranda, on the other hand, admitted to the call in a post-game interview, noting that Baylor Football is all about taking opportunities when they arise, a mindset that eventually helped them win the game.
With 1:19 remaining, Oklahoma State had possession of the ball at the Baylor 2-yard line. Baylor made one of the all-time great goal-line stops, stopping them on three runs and a pass. The series between Baylor and Texas A&M began in 1899, and the two colleges are only 90 miles apart on the Brazos River. From 1960 to 1990, the rivalry was at its most competitive, with Baylor winning 13 games, A&M 16 games, and two games ending in ties. During that time, 18 games were decided by seven points or fewer. Given A&M’s decision to depart the Big 12 Conference, the game played in 2011 will most likely be the last in the series for the foreseeable future.
With the most recent game in 2011, Texas A&M leads the series 68–31–9. The Bears previously played at Municipal Stadium (1936–1949), Cotton Palace (1926–1929), and Carroll Field on campus (1906–1925 and 1930–1935). Carroll Field has been the Bears’ only on-campus home field since the 2012 season.Baylor University broke ground on a new $266 million stadium on the north bank of the Brazos River in the fall of 2012.
The stadium debuted for the 2014 football season on August 31, 2014, with the opening game against old Southwest Conference opponent Southern Methodist University (SMU). Drayton McLane, Jr., a major donor to the stadium’s development, was honoured with the name McLane Stadium. McLane Stadium is Waco’s and Central Texas’ largest building project, and it has boosted revenue in the downtown area. Although McLane Stadium has a smaller capacity than Floyd Casey Stadium, it may be expanded to 55,000 seats.
The Simpson Center, which opened in 2009, is a 97,000-square-foot building for football operations. The 13,500-square-foot football weight room is also housed in this structure. The structure is over three floors tall and is built in a typical collegiate architecture that matches the red brick southern architectural style of the Baylor University campus. The major athletic training room, football team locker room, equipment room, coach’s locker room, and a huge primary weight room are all located there.
Academic support rooms are also available at the Simpson Center for studying and academic work. The Simpson Center now has state-of-the-art underwater treadmills for sports and athletic rehabilitation. The indoor practise facility, which includes a full football field and an air-conditioned building, allows Baylor athletes to practise in all weather conditions throughout the year.
Jay Allison, a veteran Baylor letterwinner and successful businessman, and his wife Jenny donated the indoor facility. The new state-of-the-art indoor field, which backs up to the Brazos River, was planned to be a part of the Highers Athletic Complex. The structure was completed in 2010 at a cost of $15.4 million.
