Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb established the Bee Gees in 1958. On November 20, 2011, it was stated that Robin Gibb, who was 61 years old at the time, had been diagnosed with liver cancer, which he had been aware of for several months. In recent months, he had gotten substantially thinner and had to cancel many appearances owing to acute abdomen pain. On February 13, 2012, Robin performed with British military group the Soldiers at the London Palladium for the Coming Home charity performance in support of injured servicemen. It was his first public appearance in in five months, and it turned out to be his last.

On April 14, 2012, it was announced that Robin had caught pneumonia and was in a coma in a Chelsea hospital.  He awoke on April 20, 2012, but his condition quickly deteriorated, and he died on May 20, 2012, of liver and kidney failure.
