The western was Ben’s speciality. By the age of twelve, he had his own horse, had honed his riding skills, and had meticulously rehearsed the manoeuvres he had seen on TV. In The Rose Tattoo (1955), he gave arguably his most effective performance in a film (as the good-natured sailor in love with Marisa Pavan). Ben pursued a decent, if unimpressive, career as a television guest performer, with a preference for westerns (Laramie (1959), Bonanza (1959), Gunsmoke (1955) ) and criminal dramas (Perry Mason (1957), Mannix (1967) ).
