Bethany Meilani Hamilton (born February 8, 1990) is an American competitive surfer and writer who survived a shark attack in 2003 and returned to professional surfing. Her autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board, published in 2004, was made into the feature film Soul Surfer, released in 2011.
Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable was a documentary about her released in 2013. Tom (born September 13, 1948) and Cheri Hamilton gave birth to Hamilton on February 8, 1990. (born February 14, 1952). She began surfing competitively at the age of eight and received her first sponsorship by the age of ten after starting to surf at the age of three. Hamilton’s mother, a housewife, educated her from the sixth grade through high school. Her father worked in a local cafe as a server. She professes faith in Jesus Christ.
Through common connections, Hamilton met Adam Dirks, a youth preacher, in early 2012. In 2013, they got married. On August 18, 2013, the couple married on an estate on Kauai’s north shore, close to her childhood home. On June 1, 2015, the couple had their first child, Tobias. Wesley, their second son, was born on March 27, 2018.
Micah, a third son, was born on February 14, 2021. When word of the shark attack got out, a family of fisherman lead by Ralph Young presented investigators with images of a 14-foot-long (4.3-meter) tiger shark they had caught and killed about a mile away from the attack location.
Its mouth was full of surfboard splinters. Its mouth measurements matched Hamilton’s broken board. The cops confirmed it was the same person who had attacked her in late 2004.Despite the incident’s devastation, Hamilton was adamant about getting back into surfing.
She returned to her board a month after the attack. She began by using a custom-made board that was somewhat longer and thicker than typical and included a handle for her right arm, making it easier to paddle, and she learned to kick harder to compensate for the loss of her left arm.
She returned to surfing on November 26, 2003, just 26 days after the incident, and competed in her first major competition on January 10, 2004, after teaching herself to surf with one arm.She now rides short-boards designed for competitive performance.
Hamilton’s shark-bit surfboard, as well as the bathing suit she was wearing at the time, which was a gift from ocean photographer Aaron Chang, are on exhibit at the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, California. She’s been a guest on a number of TV shows since the incident. Her manager, Roy “Dutch” Hofstetter, who later produced the film Soul Surfer, oversaw her transition from shark attack victim to inspirational role model in the media.
