Bill de Blasio was born on May 8, 1961, in Manhattan, New York, United States. His parents drove down from Norwalk, Connecticut, to Manhattan’s Doctors Hospital for his birth, despite the fact that he did not grow up in the city. He is the son of Maria Angela Wilhelm (1917–1979) and Warren Wilhelm (1917–1979). To honour his maternal family and because of his alienation from his father, he changed his name to Warren de Blasio-Wilhelm in 1983 and then to Bill de Blasio in 2001.

Steven and Donald De Blasio are De Blasio’s older brothers. Donald Wilhelm of Ohio and Nina Wilhelm of Iowa were his paternal grandparents. Donald George Wilhelm Jr., his paternal uncle, worked for the Central Intelligence Agency in Iran and secretly wrote the memoir of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran’s last shah.

A grenade exploded beneath his left foot during the 82-day Battle of Okinawa, and his leg was amputated below the knee. He married Maria in 1945 after receiving the Purple Heart and went on to work for the federal government as a budget analyst. Warren became Texaco’s chief international economist soon after, and the family relocated to Connecticut, where he commuted to Manhattan by train. Maria also commuted to the Italian embassy for her public relations work.

When Warren was offered a job at Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1966, the family moved, and de Blasio started kindergarten. Maria and her extended family then reared Bill and his brother Donald. When Bill was 18, his father committed suicide while suffering from fatal lung cancer. De Blasio received his diploma from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in 1979. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in metropolitan studies and an urban studies programme from New York University, as well as a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He was a Harry S. Truman Scholar in 1981.

De Blasio and his wife, activist and poet Chirlane McCray, met and married in 1994 while both working for Mayor Dinkins’ administration. In defiance of a US travel prohibition, the couple honeymooned in Cuba. Before moving into Gracie Mansion, the usual residence of New York City mayors, they lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Dante, a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School who went on to Yale University in 2019, and Chiara, a student at Santa Clara University in California, are their two children. Chiara addressed her drug usage and sadness in a four-minute video posted by the mayor’s transition team in late December 2013.

In 1984, de Blasio worked for the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice’s Urban Fellows Program. De Blasio was employed as a political organiser by the Quixote Center in Maryland in 1987, shortly after finishing graduate school at Columbia. During the Nicaraguan Revolution in 1988, he flew to Nicaragua with the Quixote Center for ten days to assist distribute food and medication. De Blasio was a staunch supporter of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, the country’s dominant socialist government, which was opposed by the Reagan administration at the time.

Blasio returned to New York City after returning from Nicaragua, where he worked for a foundation focused on improving health care in Central America. In his leisure time, he continued to assist the Sandinistas by joining the Nicaragua Solidarity Network of Greater New York, which organised meetings and fundraisers for the Sandinista political party. In 1989, De Blasio began his career in city politics as a volunteer organiser for David Dinkins’ mayoral campaign. After the campaign, de Blasio worked as a City Hall staffer. When asked about his social aims in 1990, he defined himself as a supporter of democratic socialism.

New de-escalation training for police officers, fewer cannabis prosecutions, the introduction of police body cameras, and the suspension of the post-9/11 monitoring program of Muslim citizens are among De Blasio’s policy achievements. He launched free universal Pre-K in the city during his first term. During his first campaign, De Blasio branded New York City as a “tale of two cities,” and he has emphasized the city’s glaring economic disparity. In the city’s economics, urban planning, public education, police relations, and privatization, he has backed socially liberal and progressive policies.

For the 2020 presidential election, De Blasio ran in the Democratic primaries. He stopped his candidacy on September 20, 2019, after receiving low poll ratings and failing to qualify for the third round of primary debates, and five months later backed Bernie Sanders.
