Maher was born on 20 January 1956 in the city of New York, United States. His mother, Julie Maher, was a nurse and his father, William Aloysius Maher Jr., was a network news editor and radio presenter. He was reared in the Roman Catholic faith of his Irish-American father. He had no idea that his mother’s family was Jewish until he was in his early teens. When Maher was thirteen, his father stopped taking him and his sister to Catholic church services because he disagreed with the Catholic Church’s teaching on birth control.

Maher was up in River Vale, New Jersey, and attended Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, where he graduated in 1974. He subsequently went to Cornell University and graduated in 1978 with a double degree in English and History.

In 2003, he began dating Coco Johnsen, a former Playboy Cyber Girl. Johnsen sued Maher for US$9 million in November 2004, after the end of their 17-month relationship, for alleged “insulting, demeaning, and demeaning racial slurs.” Maher pledged to marry her and father her children, as well as financially support her and purchase her a home in Beverly Hills, according to her lawsuit. According to Johnsen’s lawsuit, she resigned her profession as a flight attendant and occasional model in order to be with him.

Maher began dating best-selling novelist and former hip hop model Karrine Steffans in 2005. Cara Santa Maria, a former adjunct lecturer, scientific educator, and current Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe co-host, dated Maher from 2009 to 2011. Maher was dating Anjulie Persaud, a musician from Ontario, in 2014. [Maher started out as a stand-up comedian and actor. In 1979, he hosted the comedy club Catch a Rising Star in New York City.

Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, a late-night political chat program that aired on Comedy Central from 1993 to 1997 then on ABC from 1997 to 2002, had Maher as the host. The show opened with a topical monologue by Maher, followed by the introduction of four guests, who were generally from a wide range of fields, including show business, popular culture, political commentators, political strategists, authors, and, on rare occasions, news personalities. The group would debate current events chosen by Maher, who would also take part in the conversations. A regular guest on the show, Jerry Seinfeld, said that Politically Incorrect reminded him of 1950s and 1960s talk shows “where guests talked with one other as much as with the presenter.”

Politically Incorrect earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Technical Direction, two CableACE Awards for Best Talk Show Series, and a Genesis Award for Best Television Talk Show, among other accolades. For creating, writing, and anchoring Politically Incorrect, Maher received multiple award nominations, including 10 Emmy nominations, two TV Guide awards, and two Writers Guild nominations.

After he made a contentious on-air statement six days after the September 11 attacks, ABC opted not to extend Maher’s contract for Politically Incorrect in 2002. He agreed with his guest, conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza, that the 9/11 perpetrators were not cowards. Later, Maher stressed that his remark was not anti-military in any manner, citing his well-documented longtime support for the American military. FedEx and Sears dropped their commercials from the event after receiving complaints, losing the show a large amount of money.

On Politically Incorrect, Maher’s comments following 9/11 were not the first time he had aroused debate. After being extensively chastised for comparing his canines to handicapped children, he expressed his great sorrow and apologised the next year. The show was discontinued on June 16, 2002, after Sinclair Broadcast Group had removed it from its ABC-affiliated stations months before. Maher earned the Los Angeles Press Club president’s award on June 22, 2002, just six days after the termination of Politically Incorrect. Maher was on the judging panel for the PEN/Own Newman’s First Amendment Award in 2002.

Maher appears often on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and HLN, among other cable news networks. Maher has been a frequent guest on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Rachel Maddow Show, and Countdown with Keith Olbermann, as well as CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. Maher has also been on HLN’s The Joy Behar Show as a guest. He authored the foreword to Bill Press’s book Spin This!: All the Ways We Don’t Tell the Truth, which was published in 2002.

Maher hosted Larry King Live on January 13, 2006, and was a frequent guest on the show. On the show’s June 29, 2010 episode, Maher was a special guest, and CNN anchor Larry King announced his retirement. On December 16, 2010, Maher and Ryan Seacrest co-hosted the final edition of Larry King Live.
