Murray was born on 21 September 1950, in Evanston, Illinois, United States. St. Edward’s Catholic Primary School and St. Bonaventure’s Catholic School were his schools. Murray worked at a Co-op store in Canning Town after finishing high school and boxed for the Reggie and Ronnie Kray-owned West Ham Boxing Club for 12 years. Murray later testified as a character witness for Charlie Kray, who was suspected of importing cocaine, and they never asked for the money back.

On Super Bowl Sunday in 1981, he married Margaret Kelly. On March 25th, they married in a church in front of their family. Homer and Luke were their two sons.

Murray’s romance with Jennifer Butler, Murray and Kelly separated. In 1997, he married Butler. Caleb, Jackson, Cooper, and Lincoln were their four boys. Butler filed for divorce citing domestic abuse, adultery, and sex, marijuana, and alcohol addiction. In 2008, they were granted divorce.

Murray debuted as an actor in the 1963 picture Two Left Feet, in which he performed a brief uncredited role. Following that, he appeared in minor roles in films such as Poor Cow (1967), Corruption (1968), Up the Junction (1968), and Performance (1968). He appeared in a number of television shows from the 1970s to the early 1990s, including Softly, Softly, The Sweeney, The Professionals, Minder, Bergerac, and Casualty. Before David Jason won the role of Derek “Del Boy” Trotter in the BBC TV series Only Fools and Horses, he was one of the candidates for the part. He was most known for his part as “Joey” in the 1980 smash film McVicar. He was supposed to assist McVicar in hiding when he escaped from jail in the film.

He was cast as DS Don Beech in the ITV police drama series The Bill in 1995, and he remained a regular cast member until late 2000. In 2001, he returned to the character in “Beech on the Run,” a special spin-off episode. Beech is Back, a six-part mini-series, was released after that. He made his final appearance as Beech in 2004 for a five-episode guest appearance in which his character escaped from jail and is now ‘on the run.’ Murray had previously appeared in an episode of the series as a different character, DI Jackson, in 1989.

He joined the cast of the iconic BBC serial show EastEnders in late 2004 and played gangster Johnny Allen. Murray’s previous appearance on the show was as loan shark Mr. X, which he played for only two episodes in 1991. Murray’s character, Johnny Allen, first appeared on the show on January 4, 2005, and quickly rose to prominence as the show’s main antagonist after terrorising a number of characters, including Peggy Mitchell’s sworn enemy; her sons Phil and Grant Mitchell; their cousin Billy Mitchell, whom Johnny first employed in his criminal empire; Phil and Grant’s ex-lover Sharon Watts; and her godmother Pauline Mitchell.

During his stint on the programme, Johnny assassinated fellow mob boss Andy Hunter by tossing him from a motorway bridge during the program’s 20th anniversary episode, usurping Andy’s status as Walford’s reigning crime leader, and then arranged for Jake’s brother Danny Moon to kill Sharon’s husband Dennis Rickman on New Year’s Eve 2005. In March 2006, he left the programme when his character was imprisoned after his daughter Ruby Allen persuaded him to admit to murdering Dennis and killing Andy himself.

In October 2006, he made a brief comeback to EastEnders when his character was killed off after suffering a heart attack in jail, but not before attempting to arrange the killing of Ruby’s lover and Stacey’s brother Sean Slater after learning of his plans to take her family’s assets. Murray earned the ‘Best Villain’ award at the British Soap Awards in May 2006 for his portrayal of Johnny Allen, who is considered one of the finest villains in British soap history by critics.

Since then, he has acted in films such as Rollin’ with the Nines (2006), Rise of the Footsoldier (2007), Doghouse (2009), and Dead Cert (2010). In the video games Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, he performed the voice of Captain John Price. He also appears in commercials for Injury Lawyers 4 U, a compensation claims firm based in the United Kingdom.
