Casey was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the eighth child of Ellen and Bob Casey, Pennsylvania’s 42nd governor. He is of Irish ancestry. Casey attended Scranton Preparatory School and graduated in 1978. Following in his father’s footsteps, he graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1982 and earned a Juris Doctor degree from The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law in 1988. Between college and law school, Casey was a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, where he taught fifth grade and coached basketball at the Gesu School in inner-city Philadelphia. Casey was a lawyer in Scranton from 1991 to 1996.
In 1996, Casey ran for and was elected Pennsylvania State Auditor General. He was re-elected in 2000 after serving two terms from 1997 to 2005. He was named the “Most Likely to Succeed” in a 2002 PoliticsPA feature storey honoring politicians with yearbook superlatives.
Casey attempted to follow in his father’s footsteps by running for Governor of Pennsylvania. In the Democratic primary, Casey ran against former Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell. The Pennsylvania Democratic Party backed Casey, seeing him as a more electable candidate than Rendell. Rendell won the nomination in a bitter primary by winning only 10 of 67 counties: Philadelphia and its suburbs, the Lehigh Valley exurbs, Lancaster County, and Centre County, the home of Penn State University. Rendell later won the general election.
Casey received phone calls from U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, the chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and Senator Harry Reid, the Senate Minority Leader, in 2005. Both men asked him to run for the U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Rick Santorum in 2006. Casey launched his campaign for the Democratic nomination on March 5, 2005. Casey’s Senate campaign was his fifth statewide campaign in nine years.
Casey ran for re-election in 2012. His chances of re-election were bleak. Observers noted that as the election approached, Casey, an early Obama supporter, “began to oppose the president outright or developed more nuanced responses to events that distinguish him from Mr. Obama.” Analysts believe Mr. Casey wants to “distance himself from a president whose job approval ratings in Pennsylvania are low.” The National Journal reported in October 2011 that “the Scranton area is hugely important for 2012” for both Obama and Casey, but “the city has among the worst unemployment in the state, and it’s filled with blue-collar Dems who weren’t very enthusiastic about Obama when he was first elected.”
