Carly Rae Jepsen, a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor, was born on November 21, 1985. Jepsen was born and raised in Mission, British Columbia, and attended the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, British Columbia, where she studied musical theatre. She moved to Vancouver after finishing her studies and finished third on Canadian Idol’s fifth season in 2007. Tug of War, Jepsen’s folk-influenced debut studio album, was released in Canada in 2008 and received positive reviews.

Jepsen’s big break occurred in 2012, when her track “Call Me Maybe”became the best-selling single of the year, charting at number one in 18 different countries. As a consequence, School Boy Records and Interscope Records signed her to a combined worldwide record deal. Later that year, Jepsen released his second studio album, Kiss. It marked a more significant turn into mainstream pop music, and it was moderately successful commercially, hitting the top ten in Canada and the United States.

Jepsen made her Broadway debut in 2014 as Cinderella’s title role. Her third studio album, Emotion, came out the following year. It’s known for merging dance-pop and synth-pop with indie sensibilities, as well as its influence from 1980s music. While it was not as commercially successful as Kiss, it did get critical acclaim for its first hit, “I Really Like You.” Jepsen provided her voice to the animated film Ballerina and performed in the television special Grease: Live in 2016. On May 17, 2019, she released her fourth studio album, Dedicated, and a year later, Dedicated Side B. Jepsen was the second of Alexandra Lanzarotta and Larry Jepsen’s three children, born in Mission, British Columbia.

Her ancestors are from Denmark, England, and Scotland. Colin, Jepsen’s older brother, and Katie, Jepsen’s younger sister She attended Heritage Park Secondary School, where she developed her interest in musical theatre by appearing in student productions of Annie, Grease, and The Wiz, in which she played Annie, Sandy Olsson, and Dorothy Gale, respectively.  Jepsen considered a career in music education as a second choice because her parents and stepparents were teachers.   She applied to programmes at Capilano University and the University of British Columbia that were related to music. Beverly Holmes, her high school theatre instructor, convinced her to apply to the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, British Columbia.

“It was quite evident to me after that school, as much fun as I had, I really did want to pursue more of a strictly musical career rather than acting and all the dancing,” she says of the year-long programme, in which she was one of 25 female students accepted.Jepsen moved to Vancouver’s west side after graduating and had a number of occupations. She started Trees Organic Coffee’s open mic night while working as a barista and pastry chef assistant. She slept on a pull-out sofa, penned songs in her spare time with a guitar her parents gave her, and “played numerous times a week at musician-friendly holes in the wall,” according to Jepsen. Prior to their collaboration, Jepsen worked as a bartender at the Media Club and requested an extra-late shift to see Sia.

In March 2015, Jepsen released “I Really Like You,” the first song from her third album. It reached number 14 in Canada and number five in the UK, thanks to a music video featuring actor Tom Hanks lip-syncing to the song.  Emotion, the album, was released in June 2015 and got great reviews; it was included on numerous year-end albums lists.  Emotion became a cult classic, bringing her music to a more mature audience. In Canada, the album reached number eight, while in the United States, it reached number sixteen on the Billboard 200.

It features collaborations with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, Sia, Dev Hynes, Greg Kurstin, and Ariel Rechtshaid, among others.  In July 2015, “Run Away with Me,” the second single, was released.  Later that year, in promotion of Emotion, Jepsen went on the Gimmie Love Tour.  Jepsen also performed a cover of Wham”Last !’s Christmas” and was featured on a new version of Bleachers’ “Shadow” from their album Terrible Thrills, .In January 2016, Jepsen portrayed Frenchy in Grease Live, a live broadcast of the musical Grease on Fox.She sang a new song called “All I Need Is an Angel” as part of her performance.

Jepsen recorded the theme song for the Netflix series Fuller House in late 2015, which is a reworking of the Full House theme song. She made her debut as a member of The Knocks on their debut album 55, released in 2016. In August 2016, Jepsen released Emotion: Side B, an EP that included eight Emotion cut tracks. Rolling Stone and Pitchfork both included the EP on their end-of-year lists. “Cut to the Feeling,” a single by Jepsen, was released in May 2017. The song was supposed to be for Emotion, but it ended up in the animated film Ballerina, in which Jepsen has a supporting part.  It was also included in a special Japan-only deluxe edition of Emotion: Side B.
