The Carolina Hurricanes (also known as the Canes) are a North Carolina-based professional ice hockey team. They are a member of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference and play their home games at PNC Arena in the National Hockey League (NHL).

The World Hockey Association’s New England Whalers founded the franchise in 1971. (WHA). The Whalers were immediately successful, winning the Eastern Division in each of the WHA’s first three seasons and winning the Avco World Trophy for the first time in the 1972–73 season. In 1978, the Whalers competed for the World Trophy once more, but were defeated by the Winnipeg Jets in a rematch of the 1973 Finals.

The franchise was renamed the Hartford Whalers after joining the NHL in 1979 as part of the NHL–WHA merger. In 1997, the team changed its name to the Hurricanes and relocated to North Carolina. Carolina made its first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002, but were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings. The Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers to win the Stanley Cup in 2006, giving North Carolina its first major professional sports championship and, as of 2021, its only major championship.

The Hurricanes’ primary logo has always been a stylized hurricane with a secondary logo of a storm warning flag on a hockey stick. After the team’s first season in 1997, the colour scheme was changed to a slightly darker shade of red while the other colours remained the same.

At home, the Carolina Hurricanes wear red uniforms, whereas on the road, they wear white uniforms. Despite the fact that black is one of the team’s primary colours, the Hurricanes used it sparingly, opting for red helmets and red pants instead, with black serving solely as a trim colour along with silver. Nonetheless, during a few games, the Hurricanes have donned black alternative clothes.

The major logo was on the front of the uniforms, with the secondary logo on the shoulders. The red and black storm warning flags, as well as silver, red, black, and white stripes, were a defining feature of this uniform. In 2000, black trim was added to the player’s name, and piping was added to the shoulder yoke when Reebok switched to the Edge template in 2007.

The Hurricanes debuted their first black alternate uniform in 2008, with the flag logo on the front and the primary logo (dark grey) on the shoulders. Warning flag patterns dot the tail, but they’ve been recolored to silver and black, just like the primary uniforms. The sleeves and socks are accented with red and silver “V” stripes.

The

Hurricanes switched to a new set of primary uniforms in 2013. Black was used exclusively for the neck piping, letter trim, and logo on the red uniform, while it was used more prominently on the white uniform for the numbers and striping. A red nameplate with white letters and black trim was also attached to the white uniforms’ red shoulder yoke.

The flag logo and warning flag patterns were removed from both sets, and the letters were changed to Univers Condensed font. Regardless, the Hurricanes wore their previous black alternate uniform with this set.The Hurricanes made few changes to their white uniform when they switched to Adidas’ AdiZero template in 2017.

The red uniform, on the other hand, reintroduced a few elements from the original set, such as black striping and the warning flag pattern on the tail (now recolored in a dark red shade). The Hurricanes debuted a new black alternate uniform in 2018, which featured an updated flag logo that was changed to a hurricane warning flag. The primary logo was placed on the right side of the dark grey shoulder yoke, while the North Carolina Flag was added to the left.

Both logos were given a black and grey makeover. In the negative space between the flags, the state of North Carolina is also featured. The Hurricanes also started wearing green “Heritage” uniforms from the team’s Hartford years in 2018. The throwbacks were worn twice in the first season, both against the Boston Bruins; in the 2019–20 season, they were worn once at home against the Los Angeles Kings.

The Brass Bonanza theme would be played after the horn during home games with the Whalers outfits. The “CANES” moniker was written diagonally in front of the uniform in 2019, and the flag logo was returned to the shoulders. The red letters with black trim and caution flag motifs were also brought back. The clothes were ordered by owner Tom Dundon, who disliked the previous white uniform.

The Hurricanes will wear a “Reverse Retro” uniform for the 2020–21 season, based on the template of the 1980s Whalers uniforms but with a grey foundation (the only colour used by both clubs), as a homage to the 1992–97 kits.On the 40th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, Hurricanes emergency netminder David Ayres became the first emergency goaltender in NHL history to win a game, a 6–3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, for whom he works as a Zamboni driver and maintenance guy in the minor leagues.

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the season would end abruptly on March 11. In a 4–1 win over the New York Rangers on August 3, 2020, Andrei Svechnikov became the first Hurricanes/Whalers player to score a hat trick in the postseason. The Hurricanes advanced to the playoffs for the second straight season after defeating the Rangers. They did, however, lose five games against the Bruins.

It was also the first time the Hurricanes had lost in the first round of the playoffs since the 2000–2001 season. The Hurricanes won the Central Division in the 2020–21 season, their first division title since winning the Southeast Division in 2006. It was also the first time the team had qualified for the playoffs three years in a row since moving to Raleigh, and the first time in the franchise’s history that a head coach had led the team to the playoffs three years in a row.

They won the first round in six games against the Nashville Predators, but lost the second round in five games to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Jaccob Slavin, a defenseman, won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy despite having only two penalty minutes (PIM) for the entire season.

Dougie Hamilton was named to the NHL’s All-Star second team, goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie squad and finished third in the Calder Memorial Trophy voting, and head coach Brind’Amour was honoured with the Jack Adams Award, the first in Hartford/Carolina history. Tom Dundon stated on June 30, 2021 that he has purchased all of the team’s remaining minority shares.
