David Kavanagh, Sharon Browne[1][2] and David Downes, a former musical director of the Irish stage production Riverdance, developed and formed Celtic Woman, an all-female Irish musical ensemble.  Downes founded the inaugural lineup of the group “Celtic Woman” in 2004, bringing together five Irish female musicians who had never performed together before: vocalists Chlo Agnew, rla Fallon, Lisa Kelly, and Méav N Mhaolchatha, as well as fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. Downes selected a repertoire that included traditional Celtic tunes as well as contemporary music.

The show was supposed to be a one-time event in Dublin, Ireland, but several airings on PBS helped the band’s popularity skyrocket.Over the years, the band’s lineup has shifted. The band has travelled around the world on several occasions. Celtic Woman’s albums have sold more than nine million copies in total around the world. “Riverdance for the voice” is how Celtic Woman has been described.Celtic Woman has won six times the Billboard World Album Artist of the Year award.

Celtic Woman has toured extensively throughout North America, as well as internationally. Celtic Woman The Show, their debut record, was released in 2005, and the ensemble performed live in over a dozen US cities.  The individual albums of all five members were released in the United States on January 10, 2006, and were recorded between 2000 and 2004.

The group visited 88 cities in 2007 and nearly 75 cities in 2008 on their A New Journey tour. The High Kings were revealed as the group’s opening act in early April 2008, and will continue to do so until June 2008.  The tour kicked off in Tampa on February 14, 2007, with events scheduled through June 29, 2007.


New European dates, from September 22 to September 9, 2007, as well as autumn North American dates, from October 10 to November 17, 2007, and some Japan concerts, were announced in May 2007. In Amsterdam on October 6, 2008, the tour came to an end.In late 2008, the Isle of Hope tour for 2009 was revealed. It started in the spring of 2009 and ended on November 22nd of that same year.

Songs from the Heart, a 2010 tour, including some of the same material as well as new material. Chloe Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Lynn Hilary, Alex Sharpe, and Máiréad Nesbitt were among the artists who took part in the tour. In February of 2010, it started. In February 2011, Agnew, Kelly, new member Lisa Lambe, and Nesbitt embarked on a second “Songs from the Heart” tour, which included around 80 shows in North America in the spring of 2011 and ten shows in Germany and Austria in the summer of 2011.

During

December 2011, they went on a Christmas Symphony Tour to perform songs from their Christmas album A Christmas Celebration. From February through April 2012, the Believe 2012 North American Tour took place.In May and June of 2012, BELIEVE embarked on a European tour.

Lisa Kelly, who was expecting her fourth child at the time, was replaced by Susan McFadden, the younger sister of former Westlife member Brian McFadden, for the 2012 tours Agnew, Lambe, Nesbitt, and McFadden will all be performing on another Symphony Tour for the 2012 Christmas season. The trip started on the 1st of December and lasted until the 22nd.

Celtic Woman posted a promotional video for a new PBS programme, slated to air in early 2014, on its YouTube channel in July 2013. Celtic Woman released Celtic Woman: Emerald – Musical Gems, a new CD/DVD package and PBS special on February 24, 2014. Lisa Lambe, Chlo Agnew, Mairead Nesbitt, and Susan McFadden are among the cast members.

The DVD was shot in April 2013 at a tour stop in South Bend, Indiana, and began airing in March on PBS. The band released the album Solo on May 29, 2015, which featured eleven former and current members. The group released Decade: The Songs, The Show, The Traditions, The Classics on July 10, 2015, which featured all of the group’s past and current members.

The albums were published to mark the 10th anniversary of the band.Celtic Woman: Destiny, the first album for Mairead Carlin and Éabha McMahon, was released in August 2015 together with a DVD/TV special. Although Meav Ni Mhaolchatha arrived and sang as a guest, Nesbitt was the only founding member on the CD.

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards gave Destiny a nomination for Best World Music Album. The group got nominated for their first Grammy.Celtic Woman: Voices of Angels was released in August 2016 by the group. The album featured Tara McNeill for the first time, as well as none of the founding members, however Meav Ni Mhaolchatha returned as a guest.


On September 2, 2017, Celtic Woman recorded Celtic Woman: Homecoming – Live from Ireland at the 3Arena in Dublin. In January 2018, the album was released. It was the band’s debut live record. Celtic Woman announced a new TV special and DVD on July 19, 2018, to be taped at Johnstown Castle in Wexford, Ireland, on September 13–14, 2018.

It had been nine years since the band had performed an outdoor TV spectacular. The group announced a studio album to go along with the DVD the next day. Ancient Land was the title of both the DVD and record. The group’s most recent studio album, The Magic of Christmas, was released on October 25, 2019 in North America and November 8, 2019 worldwide.

Celtic Woman published their album Celebration: 15 Years of Music and Magic on February 21, 2020, to mark the group’s 15th anniversary. It was released digitally on February 27, 2020, and on March 27, 2020, the CD was released.Celtic Woman announced Postcards from Ireland on September 10, 2021, and it was published on October 29, 2021.

After the “Symphony Tour,” Lisa Kelly revealed in December 2011 that she would be taking maternity leave from the band. Kelly would be replaced by actress Susan McFadden until she returned to the group, according to the group’s website in January 2012. In January 2013, Kelly announced the inauguration of “The Lisa Kelly Voice Academy” in Peachtree City, Georgia, stating that she was transitioning from performance to teaching.

Susan has subsequently joined the band as a full member and may be seen in the new Celtic Woman PBS special and DVD Emerald, which was released in early 2014.Méav N Mhaolchatha rejoined Celtic Woman for a temporary reunion in 2012 to record Celtic Woman: Home for Christmas, her first appearance with the band since 2007.

She announced her temporary comeback to the group in August 2013 to film the PBS broadcast and DVD Celtic Woman: Home for Christmas. Chlo Agnew stated she would be leaving Celtic Woman to pursue on solo projects just before the “Home for Christmas” DVD show, and she was not included in the PBS special. Mairéad Carlin, a singer from Derry, was confirmed as Chlo’s replacement on August 23, 2013.

Management revealed just before the start of the Emerald Tour on February 14, 2014, that Lisa Lambe would be leaving the tour in early March, and that Lynn Hilary would take her place. Lambe was expected to return this summer, though no date was specified.Lambe announced in late 2014 that she will be quitting Celtic Woman to work on a solo album for the time being.

To promote her solo record and tour, she announced her permanent resignation in early 2015.  Lynn Hilary reappeared and stepped in for Lambe. Both Hilary and Alex Sharpe, as well as Méav, were later announced to be returning for the Decade 10th Anniversary tour. Éabha McMahon, a major singer for Celtic Woman, was announced on August 11, 2015.

Máiréad Nesbitt, a long-time member of Celtic Woman, announced her departure from the band on August 7, 2016, to pursue her own projects. Tara McNeill, a violinist, harpist, and singer, joined Celtic Woman as a new member. McFadden took a break from the Celtic Woman: Homecoming tour from March 11 to March 23 to deal with a personal matter. Sharpe took McFadden’s spot in the starting lineup for the time being. On March 24, 2018, McFadden rejoined the tour and stayed with it until the finale.
