Chelsea Football Team, situated in Fulham, West London, is an English professional football club. The club, which was founded in 1905, is a member of the Premier League, England’s top football league. Chelsea is one of England’s most successful clubs, with over thirty titles to their name, including six league crowns and eight European titles. Stamford Bridge is the club’s home turf.

Chelsea won the League Championship for the first time in 1955. In 1970, the club won the FA Cup for the first time, and in 1971, the Cup Winners’ Cup, their first European trophy. Following a period of decline in the late 1970s and 1980s, the club saw a resurgence in the 1990s, with more cup victories. Chelsea has won five Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League wins,

and two UEFA Europa League titles in the last two decades, making them the most successful team in the club’s history. Chelsea is one of only five clubs to win all three of UEFA’s major club tournaments, the first English club to do so, the only London club to win the Champions League, and the only club to win all three major European competitions twice.

Gus Mears bought Stamford Bridge athletics facility in 1904 with the intention of converting it to a football stadium. After an offer to lease the stadium to adjacent Fulham was turned down, Mears decided to form his own team to use it. The name of the neighbouring borough of Chelsea was chosen for the new club because there was already a team named Fulham in the borough; options such as Kensington FC, Stamford Bridge FC, and London FC were also considered.

Chelsea Football Club was founded on March 10, 1905, at The Rising Sun bar (now The Butcher’s Hook), on Fulham Road, directly across from the current main entrance.Chelsea won their sixth English title in 2017 under new coach Antonio Conte, and their eighth FA Cup the following year.

Following a fifth-place finish in 2018, Conte was ousted and replaced by Maurizio Sarri. Chelsea reached the League Cup final, losing on penalties to Manchester City, and won the Europa League for the second time, defeating Arsenal 4–1. Sarri departed Chelsea to become the manager of Juventus, and was replaced by Frank Lampard, a former Chelsea player.

Lampard led Chelsea to fourth place in the Premier League and to the FA Cup final, where they were defeated 2–1 by Arsenal. In January 2021, Lampard was fired and Thomas Tuchel was appointed as his replacement.  Tuchel led Chelsea to the FA Cup final, where they lost 1–0 to Leicester City, and to their second UEFA Champions League title, which they won in Porto with a 1–0 triumph over Manchester City.

The club won the UEFA Super Cup for the second time in 2021, defeating Villarreal 6–5 in a penalty shootout after the match had drawn 1–1 after extra time in Belfast. Chelsea stated on April 18, 2021 that they would join a new European Super League, which would include the top European clubs.

The club confirmed their withdrawal days later after receiving outrage from fans.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chelsea called former players to check on their health, according to Tony Cascarino, a former Chelsea player.  Abramovich is said to have decided against furloughing the club’s non-matchday employees.

Chelsea, one of the first clubs to assist the NHS, rented the Millenium Hotel, which is owned by the club, to NHS employees. Since the team’s inception, Chelsea has only had one home venue, Stamford Bridge. It was officially opened on April 28, 1877, and for the first 28 years of its life, it was almost entirely used by the London Athletic Club as a venue for athletics events, with no football at all.

Gus Mears and his brother Joseph bought the ground in 1904 after buying surrounding land (previously a big market garden) with the intention of hosting football matches on the now 12.5 acre (51,000 m2) site.  Archibald Leitch, a well-known football architect who previously created Ibrox, Craven Cottage, and Hampden Park, designed Stamford Bridge for the Mears family.

Unlike other football clubs, Chelsea was created for the purpose of playing at Stamford Bridge.Stamford Bridge had an initial capacity of roughly 100,000 people, making it England’s second largest stadium after Crystal Palace. It had an open bowl-like architecture and only one grandstand with seating.

A terrace was built on the southern section of the ground in the early 1930s, with a roof that covered about one fifth of the stand. The “Shed End” was given to the stand because its roof resembled that of a corrugated iron shed, though it is unclear who came up with the moniker. It became renowned as the home of Chelsea’s most ardent and loud supporters beginning in the 1960s.

The North Stand, which was erected in 1939 and remained until 1975, was a small seating stand that was added in 1939. Chelsea has had four primary crests over the years, all of which have undergone minor changes. The image of a Chelsea pensioner, the war veterans who live at the neighbouring Royal Hospital Chelsea, was the first, adopted when the club was created.

This contributed to the club’s original “pensioner” moniker, which lasted for the next half-century despite the fact that it was never printed on the shirts. Ted Drake took over as manager of Chelsea in 1952 and immediately started modernising the club. He insisted on replacing the Chelsea pensioner crest, which he thought was outdated.

For a year, a stopgap insignia consisting of the letters C.F.C. was used. The club’s crest was modified in 1953 to a standing blue lion with a staff looking backwards. The “lion rampant regardant” was derived from the arms of then-club president Viscount Chelsea and the staff from the Abbots of Westminster, past Lords of the Manor of Chelsea, and it was based on components from the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea’s coat of arms.

Three red flowers and two footballs were also included to represent England. In the early 1960s, this was the first crest to emerge on Chelsea shirts.Chelsea’s crest was updated again in 1986, with Ken Bates as the club’s new owner, in an attempt to modernise the club and because the original rampant lion symbol could not be patented.

The new badge had a more naturalistic non-heraldic lion standing over the C.F.C. initials, in white rather than blue. This remained over the next 19 years, with some changes such as the usage of different colours, such as red from 1987 to 1995 and yellow from 1995 to 1999, before returning to white.

With the club’s centennial approaching and fan requests for the beloved 1950s badge to be restored, it was decided to replace the crest again in 2005. The new crest, which featured a blue heraldic lion carrying a staff and was used from 1953 to 1986, was officially adopted for the start of the 2005–06 season. The words ‘100 YEARS’ and ‘CENTENARY 2005–2006’ were added to the top and bottom of the crest, respectively, during the centennial season.
