Cher is an American singer, actress, and television personality who was born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946. She has been dubbed the “Goddess of Pop” by the media, and has been regarded as encapsulating female liberty in a male-dominated business. Cher is noted for her unusual contralto singing voice, as well as having performed in a range of entertainment fields and adopting a variety of fashions and looks over the course of her six-decade career.

Cher rose to prominence in 1965 as one half of the folk rock husband-and-wife combo Sonny & Cher, whose song “I Got You Babe” hit number one in the US and UK charts. They sold 40 million records globally as a group. With the top-ten hits “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” and “You Better Sit Down Kids,” she launched her solo career around the same period.

With her CBS sitcoms The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which was viewed by over 30 million viewers weekly during its three-year run, and subsequently the eponymous Cher, she became a television personality in the 1970s. By wearing lavish gowns on her television broadcasts, she established herself as a fashion trailblazer.

Cher released the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one songs “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “Half-Breed,” and “Dark Lady” while working on television, making her the female artist with the most number-one singles in US history at the time. She launched the disco record Take Me Home (1979) after her divorce from Sonny Bono in 1975, and her Las Vegas musical residency from 1979 to 1982 earned her $300,000 per week.

Cher made her Broadway debut in the play Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean in 1982, and went on to appear in the film adaptation of the play. Her subsequent performances in films such as Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), and Moonstruck (1987), the latter of which won her an Academy Award for Best Actress, earned her critical praise.

Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989), and Love Hurts (1991) were her next albums, all of which delivered hit singles including “I Found Someone,” “If I Could Turn Back Time,” and “Love and Understanding.” Cher contributed to the music for her next film, Mermaids (1990), which resulted in the UK number-one song “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss).” With a segment in the abortion-themed anthology If These Walls Could Talk, she made her directorial debut (1996).

Cher’s dance-pop album Believe, whose title tune topped the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 songs of 1999 and became the best-selling single of all time by a female artist in the UK, helped her reach a new commercial peak in 1998. It incorporates the “Cher effect,” a groundbreaking use of Auto-Tune to distort her vocals.

Her

Living Proof: The Farewell Tour, which ran from 2002 to 2005, was one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time, grossing $250 million. She secured a three-year, $60 million deal to headline the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 2008. She starred in the films Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) in the 2010s, and released studio albums Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018), both of which opened at number three on the Billboard 200.

Cher is one of the best-selling musicians in the world, with over 100 million albums sold. Grammy Prizes, Emmy Awards, Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, the Billboard Icon Award, and awards from the Kennedy Center Honors and the Council of Fashion Designers of America are among her accomplishments.

From the 1960s until the 2010s, she is the only artist to have a number-one single on the Billboard chart six times in a row. She is known for her political beliefs, social media presence, humanitarian initiatives, and social engagement, particularly LGBT rights and HIV/AIDS prevention, in addition to her music and acting. Cher returned to film in 2018 with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, a romantic musical comedy.

Viviana Olen and Matt Harkins of New York magazine commented on the situation “It isn’t until the film’s conclusion that its true promise is realised: Cher appears… It becomes evident that any film, no matter how good, would be incomparably better if Cher was in it.”  She plays Ruby Sheridan, the grandmother of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and the mother of Donna (Meryl Streep) in the film.

“Fernando” and “Super Trouper” are two ABBA songs Cher recorded for the film’s soundtrack.  ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus observed, “She transforms Fernando into her own person. It’s now her song.” Cher performed at the 40th Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras on March 4, 2018. After she hinted about her appearance on Twitter, tickets sold out in three hours.  Cher embarked on the Here We Go Again Tour in September 2018.

Cher revealed she was working on an album featuring cover versions of ABBA songs while promoting Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. On September 28, 2018, the album Dancing Queen was released.  “The 72-year-old makes ABBA songs not only seem like they should’ve been written for her in the first place, but like they firmly belong in 2018,” wrote Rolling Stone’s Brittany Spanos.

“It’s Cher’s most significant release since 1998’s Believe,” Entertainment Weekly’s Marc Snetiker said, adding that “the album ender, ‘One of Us,’ is frankly one of Cher’s best recordings in years.” Dancing Queen opened at number three on the Billboard 200, tying Cher’s highest-charting solo album in the United States with Closer to the Truth from 2013.

It achieved the year’s highest sales week for a pop album by a female artist, as well as Cher’s biggest sales week since 1991, with first-week sales of 153,000 units. Dancing Queen was also the first Cher album to reach number one on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart. The Cher Show, a jukebox musical based on Cher’s life and music, debuted on June 28, 2018 at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago and ran until July 15, 2018.

It began previews on Broadway on November 1 and opened on December 3, 2018. It was written by Rick Elice and stars three actresses who portray Cher at various periods of her life.  In 2022, The Cher Show will go on a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Cher was honoured with a Kennedy Center Honors award on December 2, 2018, which is given annually in Washington to performers who have made significant contributions to culture.

Cyndi Lauper, Little Big Town, and Adam Lambert sang tributes at the event.  Cher announced four new projects for the next two years on Twitter in 2018: a Christmas album,a second album of ABBA covers,an autobiography, and a biographical film about her life. Cher’s latest perfume, Cher Eau de Couture, was released in October 2019 after a four-year development period. Cher’s second fragrance, after 1987’s Uninhibited, is described as “genderless.”

Cher was announced as the new face of fashion brand Dsquared2 on February 4, 2020. She was the face of the brand’s spring/summer advertising campaign, which was shot by Mert & Marcus.Cher’s debut Spanish-language single, a version of ABBA’s “Chiquitita,” was released in May. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, proceeds from the single were donated to UNICEF.

With “Stop Crying Your Heart Out,” an Oasis version recorded in honour of the BBC’s Children in Need charity, Cher spawned a UK top-ten song in November as part of the charity supergroup BBC Radio 2 Allstars. In the animated feature film Bobbleheads: The Movie, Cher has a voice-over role as a bobblehead version of herself (2020).

“Cher’s luminous performance in Moonstruck warmed us in quarantine,” film reviewers Wesley Morris and A. O. Scott said of her appearance on The New York Times Magazine’s list of “The Best Actors of 2020,” the first time an actor not in a current-year theatrical picture made it on the annual list.

Cher appeared as God in Pink’s music video “All I Know So Far” in May 2021. Cher starred alongside rapper Saweetie in MAC Cosmetics’ “Challenge Accepted” commercial in January 2022. Cher’s film performances generally mirror her public image as a rebellious, sexually autonomous, and self-made woman, according to author Yvonne Tasker in her book Working Girls: Gender and Sexuality in Popular Cinema (2002).

She frequently plays a social mediator for disenfranchised male characters in her films, such as Eric Stoltz’s Craniodiaphyseal dysplasia victim in Mask (1985), Liam Neeson’s mute homeless veteran in Suspect (1987), and Nicolas Cage’s socially isolated baker with a wooden hand in Moonstruck (1987).

In Moonstruck, film critic Kathleen Rowe said that Cher’s portrayal as “a ‘woman on top’  heightened by the chaotic star image Cher brings to the play.” Cher was named first on Billboard’s list of “The 100 Best Acting Performances by Musicians in Movies” for her work in Moonstruck, and her performance was described as “the benchmark by which you mentally verify all others.”

Moonstruck was named the ninth finest romantic comedy picture of all time by the American Film Institute. Cher’s public image is reflected in her music videos and live performances, in which she “repeatedly reflects on her own construction, on her pursuit for perfection, and on the female body’s performance,” according to Tasker.

In the 1992 concert video Cher at the Mirage, Cher uses a male dancer dressed as her, in contrast to other acts of the time, who frequently featured female backers mimicking the singer’s performance; author Diane Negra commented, “In authorising her own quotation, Cher acknowledges herself as fictionalised production, and proffers to her audience a pleasurable plurality.”

According to James Sullivan of the San Francisco Chronicle, “Cher is well aware that her chameleonic splendour paved the way for today’s era of stadium-sized glitz. She’s at ease enough to regard such emulation as compliment rather than thievery.” After seeing Cher’s Living Proof: The Farewell Tour in 2004, American singer Pink, who is known for her acrobatic stage appearance, began training aerial silks.

On VH1’s list of the “50 Greatest Women of the Video Era,” Cher was ranked 17th.One of the first music videos, “Hell on Wheels,” was released in 1980 and uses cinematic techniques. The 1989 music video for “If I Could Turn Back Time” was the first ever to be prohibited by MTV due to her performance on the battleship USS Missouri, riding a cannon and wearing a leather thong that displayed her tattooed buttocks.
