The Chicago Blackhawks (also known as the Hawks) are a professional ice hockey team headquartered in Chicago. They were once known as the Black Hawks until 1986. Since their inception in 1926, the Blackhawks have won six Stanley Cup championships as a member of the National Hockey League (NHLCentral )’s Division in the Western Conference. The Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers are all members of the NHL’s “Original Six.”

The squad has shared the United Center with the Chicago Bulls since 1995; both teams formerly played at the now-demolished Chicago Stadium.Frederic McLaughlin, the team’s first owner, was a “hands-on” owner who fired many coaches and guided the team to two Stanley Cup championships in 1934 and 1938. Following McLaughlin’s death in 1944, the team was taken over by the Norris family, who served as their landlord and also had shares in numerous NHL teams.

The franchise languished in favour of the Norris-owned Detroit Red Wings at first, as part of a syndicate led by longtime executive Bill Tobin. The Norris holdings were divided among family members after the senior James E. Norris died in 1952, and James D. Norris became the team’s owner. The younger Norris played an active role in the team, which won the Stanley Cup for the second time in 1961 when he was the owner.

The Wirtz family took over the franchise after James D. Norris passed away in 1966. Rocky Wirtz took over as general manager of the Blackhawks in 2007, and is credited with reviving the franchise, which had lost fan enthusiasm and competitiveness. Wirtz led the team to three Stanley Cup victories, in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Marian Hossa would miss the entirety of the 2017–18 season due to a developing skin disease, the Blackhawks announced prior to the season.

Before the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, the team made two important trades: veteran defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson was sent to the Arizona Coyotes for Connor Murphy and Laurent Dauphin, and Artemi Panarin was moved to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a four-player deal to reclaim Brandon Saad. Hjalmarsson and Hossa were key components of the Blackhawks’ three Stanley Cup championship teams in 2010, 2013, and 2015.

The team also lost defensemen Trevor van Riemsdyk to the Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft and Brian Campbell to retirement, as well as goaltender Scott Darling to the Carolina Hurricanes and centre Marcus Kruger to the Vegas Golden Knights. Patrick Sharp, Tommy Wingels, and Lance Bouma were all signed as free agents by the Chicago Blackhawks.

The

Chicago Blackhawks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 10–1 to start the 2017–18 season. At the end of December 2017, the Blackhawks had a four-game winning streak and were only four points off of a playoff berth with an 18–14–6 record. However, due to an upper-body injury, goaltender Corey Crawford missed much of 2018. The squad was relegated to the bottom of the Central Division due to inconsistent defence and goaltending, as well as a lack of offence.

On March 20, 2018, the Chicago Blackhawks were knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in nine years.  With a 33–39–10 record and 76 points in the standings, the team concluded the season with a 33–39–10 record. During the 2008–09 season, the team broadcasted all 82 games, including the playoffs, for the first time in franchise history.

At least 20 of them broadcast on WGN-TV (Channel 9), marking the first time in 30 years that the Blackhawks were seen on local over-the-air television. Due to league broadcast rights constraints, games produced by WGN-WGN TV’s Sports department are not available in WGN America’s superstation feed. Other games not televised by WGN-TV are aired on NBC Sports Chicago, the first time in at least 35 years that non-nationally broadcast home games have been seen locally, either over-the-air or on cable.

The team’s broadcast contract with WGN-TV was renewed for the following five years on February 15, 2011, with the 2011–12 NHL season as the first. On May 15, 2014, the contract was extended for another three years, keeping the team on Channel 9 until the 2018–19 season.  Beginning with the 2019–20 season, the Blackhawks (together with the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox) signed an exclusive multi-year arrangement with NBC Sports Chicago, which will see the team’s broadcasts on WGN-TV come to an end.

WBBM (780) and WMAQ/WSCR radio broadcasts alternated from the 1970s through the mid-2000s (670). Both frequencies are 50,000-watt clear channel stations, allowing the Blackhawks to be heard across the country at night, but by the beginning of April, Blackhawks games were frequently clashing with White Sox baseball.

The Cubs signed a three-year deal with WGN Radio (720 AM), a 50,000-watt station, on April 30, 2008, with games airing alternately on WIND (560 AM) in scheduling conflict situations during the baseball season due to the Cubs’ contractual preference to air on WGN; these moved to WGWG-LP (Channel 6/87.7 FM, an analogue television station carrying an audio-only sports talk format using a quirk in the FM band) in mid-2014 when Tribune The Cubs agreed to enable Blackhawks games to be broadcast on WGN during the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, with the Cubs reverting to WIND when there was a problem.

Because of WGN’s clear-channel broadcast, the Finals games could be heard across a broader area. Regardless of whether the game is broadcast on WGN or WGWG-LP, all Blackhawk games may be heard live on wgnradio.com. A backup radio station, WLUP-FM (97.9 FM), was also used.
