Known professionally as Chubby Checker (born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941), he is an American singer. When he released his smash rendition of Hank Ballard’s R&B classic “The Twist” in 1960, he became internationally renowned for popularising the twist dancing form.

In September 2008, “The Twist” topped Billboard’s list of the most popular songs to have featured in the Hot 100 since the chart’s inception in 1958, a position it held until an update to the list in August 2013. The Limbo Rock and its signature limbo dance, as well as a variety of dance forms such as the fly, were popularised by him as well.

Checker is the first recorded artist to have five albums chart in the Top 12 at the same time in the same year. The musician has often said that he has personally altered the way we dance to the rhythm of music, as he stated in an interview with Billboard: “Anywhere on the earth, if someone hears a song with a beat, they’re on the dance floor, swaying from side to side to the beat.

And it wasn’t here prior to the arrival of Chubby Checker.” Clay Cole concurred, saying: “Chubby Checker has never been adequately recognised for one of his most significant contributions to pop culture: Chubby and the Twist were responsible for getting adults out of their seats and onto the dance floor for the first time.

The Twist dance fad changed the way adults interacted with music that was previously reserved for adolescents.” Ernest Evans, well known as Chubby Checker, was born in Spring Gully, South Carolina. Raymond and . Evans started singing in a street corner harmony group when he was eight years old, and by the time he attended high school, he was taking piano lessons at Settlement Music School.

When he was younger, he would amuse his classmates by impersonating prominent performers of the day, such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and Fats Domino. Evans would perform for clients at his many occupations, including Fresh Farm Poultry in the Italian Market on Ninth Street and the Produce Market, after school, by singing and telling jokes, and he earned money for his efforts.

Evans was given the nickname “Chubby” by his manager at the Produce Market, Tony A., who worked with him. Mr. Henry Colt, the proprietor of Fresh Farm Poultry, was so taken aback by Ernest’s performances for his customers that he, along with his colleague and friend Kal Mann, who was a songwriter for Cameo-Parkway Records, arranged for young Chubby to record a private session for American Bandstand host Dick Clark.

It was during this recording session that Evans received his stage moniker, which he received from Clark’s wife, who inquired as to what Evans’ name was. “Well,” he said, “my friends refer to me as ‘Chubby.

In the midst of seeing him do a Fats Domino imitation, she said, “As in Checker?” with a grin. That small play on words (‘chubby’ meaning ‘fat,’ and ‘checkers’, like ‘dominoes,’ being a game) drew an immediate chuckle and stayed, and Evans would go on to utilise the moniker Chubby Checker from that point on in his career.

According to Billboard magazine, Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” was the most successful single of all time on the charts in 2008. Between 1958 and 2008, Billboard examined every singles that reached the top of the charts.

Additionally, he was recognised by Settlement Music School as part of the school’s centennial anniversary, as well as being named to the Settlement 100, a list of important persons who have ties to the institution.

The Artists Music Guild presented Checker with the renowned Sandy Hosey Lifetime Achievement Award on November 9, 2013, in New York City. Checker served as the presenter of the 2013 AMG Heritage Awards, and he was presented with the award during the broadcast on television.

Dee Dee Sharp, a lifelong friend of his, presented him with the award. Among his most popular songs are: Jingle Bell Rock is a popular Christmas carol (with Bobby Rydell) This is known as the Twist.

Checker claimed to have met Lodders in January of the previous year in Manila. It was on April 12, 1964, at Temple Lutheran Church in Pennsauken, New Jersey that they exchanged vows. Bianca Johanna Evans, their first child, was born on the 8th of December, 1966, at a hospital outside Philadelphia.

Mistie Bass, a WNBA player, is the daughter of Checker Bass. In addition, he is the father of musician Shan Egan, who is the main vocalist of the Philadelphia-based band Funk Church.

Currently, Chubby is married to Catharina Lodders, a Dutch model who was formerly known as Miss World 1962. Catharina is originally from the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands. The pair first met in Manila in January 1962, and on December 12, 1963, he proposed to her in a romantic setting.

“Loddy Lo,” a song written by Chubby for her, was dedicated to her and performed by him. They were ultimately united in marriage on April 12, 1964, in Pennsauken, New Jersey, at the Temple Lutheran Church. Mistie Bass, Shan Egan, Bianca Evans, and Ilka Evans were born to the couple, who were blessed with four children.

Checker has had a successful and illustrious career in the music business that has spanned over six decades. He has amassed a substantial wealth as a result of the earnings he receives from his profession as a performer and dancer. His net worth is believed to be in the neighbourhood of $4 million.

Checker’s first two singles for Cameo, “The Class” and “Dancing Dinosaur,” failed to get any attention from the general public, and he was dropped from the label. As Ballard’s rendition of “The Twist” gained popularity among dancers, Cameo Records decided to commission Checker to record a cover version of the song.

Because Dick Clark’s nationally broadcast dance programme American Bandstand is based in Philadelphia, the city where Cameo was filmed was fortunate in this regard. With a guest appearance on the famous show, Chubby was given the moniker “Checker” by Clark’s wife, who compared the singer to Fats Domino, and a large audience for his catchy song and dance routine was ensured.

According to Ed Ward’s book Rock of Ages: The Rolling Stone History of Rock and Roll, it didn’t take long for the performer to “claim the top slot on the pop charts,” despite the fact that “it was a nearly identical copy” of the other artist’s version, “right down to Ballard’s signature cry of eee-yah,” as Ward put it. And the twist dance craze didn’t go down as quickly as some other trends.

Following a waning of teens’ interest in the song, adults started to request it at clubs, probably due to the fact that the dance itself was “so basic,” in the opinion of Ward. During the course of his career, Checker was asked to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, resulting in Cameo re-releasing the song and at the time, Checker was a household name among adults.
