Charles Ernest Grassley is an American politician who is the senior United States senator from Iowa and the president pro tempore emeritus of the United States Senate. He was initially elected to the Senate in 1980 and is now serving his seventh term. Grassley served eight terms in the Iowa House of Representatives and three terms in the United States House of Representatives as a member of the Republican Party. During Republican Senate majorities, he served three times as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. When Orrin Hatch’s Senate tenure expired on January 3, 2019, as a result of his retirement, Grassley became the Senate’s most senior Republican, serving as president pro teem.
Grassley was raised on a farm in New Hartford, Iowa, as the son of Ruth and Louis Arthur Grassley. He received his high school diploma from the local high school. He got a B.A. in 1955 and an M.A. in political science in 1956 from Iowa State Teachers College. Grassley was a member of the social-professional fraternity Alpha Gamma Rho while a student.
He started a Ph.D. programmer in political science at the University of Iowa, but never finished it. Grassley was a professor at Charles City College from 1967 to 1968. Grassley was a member of the Butler County delegation.
Grassley was one of 32 senators that signed a letter to President Ronald Reagan in November 1981 endorsing David Stockman, Director of the Office of Management and Budget. While the Reagan administration was attempting to persuade senators to accept legislation permitting the formation of a radio station to broadcast to Cuba, Grassley joined fellow Iowa senators Roger Jepsen and Edward Zorinsky in requesting an amendment to the bill prohibiting the Reagan administration from operating Radio Marti on that frequency or any other commercial AM frequencies. Grassley was one of just two Republican senators, along with Mark Hatfield of Oregon, to vote against joining the international coalition to push Iraq out of Kuwait in January 1991. In August 1991, he was appointed as one of six Republicans to the Select Senate Committee on POW-MIA Affairs, which was formed in response to growing interest in the number of Americans remaining missing in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. In July 1998, President Bill Clinton named Grassley as one of the members of Congress who helped him “sign the Internal Revenue Service Restructuring and Reform Act into law today.” Grassley was one of 50 senators who voted to convict and impeach Bill Clinton on February 12, 1999.
