Schumer was born in Brooklyn’s Midwood neighborhood, the son of Selma and Abraham Schumer. His father was an exterminator, and his mother was a housewife. He and his family are Jewish, and he is Amy Schumer’s second cousin once removed. His ancestors came from the Galician town of Chortkiv in what is now western Ukraine. Schumer attended public schools in Brooklyn, earning a 1600 on the SAT and graduating as valedictorian from James Madison High School in 1967. On the television quiz show It’s Academic, he competed for Madison High. He went to Harvard College and majored in chemistry before switching to social studies after volunteering on Eugene McCarthy’s campaign.
In 1974, Schumer ran for and was elected to the New York State Assembly, replacing his mentor, Congressman Stephen Solarz. Schumer was a member of the 181st, 182nd, and 183rd New York State Legislatures from 1975 to 1981.
He has never been defeated in an election. In 1980, Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman of New York’s 16th Congressional District won the Democratic nomination to fill the Senate seat held by Republican Jacob Javits. Schumer was elected to fill Holtzman’s vacated House seat.
He was re-elected eight times in a row from the Brooklyn and Queens district, which changed numbers twice during his tenure. Due to redistricting, Schumer faced a potential matchup with Solarz in 1982.
Schumer ran for the Senate in 1998. He defeated Geraldine Ferraro and Mark Green in the Democratic primary with 51% of the vote. In the general election, he received 54 percent of the vote, defeating three-term incumbent Republican Al D’Amato. Schumer was re-elected with 71 percent of the vote in 2004, defeating the Republican nominee, Middletown Assemblyman Howard Mills, and conservative Marilyn F. O’Grady. Many New York Republicans were disappointed by Mills’ selection over the conservative Michael Benjamin, who had significant fundraising and organization advantages over Mills. Benjamin publicly accused Republican National Committee Chairman Sandy Treadwell and New York Governor George Pataki of attempting to force him out.
Many commentators have made a running joke about Schumer’s proclivity for publicity. He’s been described as a “incorrigible publicity hound.” Bob Dole once said, “The most dangerous place in Washington is between Charles Schumer and a television camera,” and Barack Obama joked about bringing the press to a banquet as his “loved ones.” Schumer frequently makes media appearances on Sundays. Some have cited his use of the media as a successful way to raise a politician’s national and constituent profile. Schumer has appeared seven times on The Daily Show. In Washington, Schumer has been a key consensus builder on contentious issues such as health care, immigration, and financial reform.
