Darius Carlos Rucker is a singer and songwriter from the United States. He was born on May 13, 1966. He rose to prominence as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Hootie & the Blowfish, a rock band he co-founded with Mark Bryan, Jim “Soni” Sonefeld, and Dean Felber at the University of South Carolina in 1986. Rucker was a member of the band for five studio albums and six Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits. Most of the songs were co-written by Rucker and the other band members.

Back to Then, his solo R&B album, was released in 2002 on Hidden Beach Recordings, but no singles were released from it. Rucker signed with Capitol Nashville as a country music singer six years later, and released the album Learn to Live the same year. With its first single, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” he became the first black artist to top the Hot Country Songs charts since Charley Pride in 1983. (Ray Charles’s duet with Willie Nelson, “Seven Spanish Angels,” reached number one in March 1985.) It was followed by two more number one singles, “It Won’t Be Like This for Long” and “Alright,” as well as “History in the Making,” a number three hit.

He was the first black American to receive the Country Music Association’s New Artist Award in 2009, and only the second black person to receive any award from the organisation. On October 12, 2010, he released his second album, Charleston, SC 1966. “Come Back Song” and “This” are two of the album’s number-one hits. With singles “True Believers” (#24), “Wagon Wheel” (#1), and “Radio” (#14) all peaking on the Billboard US Country charts, his third country album True Believers (2013) reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the US Top Country Albums Billboard chart.

Home for the Holidays (2014), his first country Christmas album, charted at No. 31 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the US Country Chart. Southern Style (2014), his fourth country album, debuted at No. 6 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the Billboard US Top Country Albums, with the singles “Homegrown Honey” (#6) and “Southern Style” (#8) peaking on the US Country charts in both 2014 and 2015. When Was the Last Time (2017), his most recent country album, debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the US Top Country Albums list (Billboard). Rucker grew up in the South Carolina city of Charleston.

With his three sisters and two brothers, he was reared by his single mother, Carolyn, a nurse at Medical University of South Carolina.  His father was never around, according to Rucker, and he only saw him on Sundays before church. His father was a member of The Traveling Echoes, a gospel group. According to Rucker, he grew up in a typical Southern African-American household. His family was poor and went to church every Sunday; at one point, his mother, two sisters, grandmother, and 14 children shared a three-bedroom house. He, on the other hand, claims to have good memories of his upbringing.

On July 5, 2016, country radio received the album’s first song, “If I Told You.” It peaked at number four on the Hot Country Chart and number one on the Country Airplay chart over a year later. In March 2017, Rucker returned to the UK’s C2C: Country to Country festival, where he was second on the lineup behind Reba McEntire.

Prior to the 100th Indianapolis 500 on May 29, 2016, Rucker performed the national anthem.On September 15, Rucker also sang the national anthem at a game between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. Rucker decided to perform the song at the request of former Bills player and personal friend Bruce Smith, whose jersey was being retired that night. In October 2017, as part of the NFL International Series, he sang the national anthem again before the Saints-Dolphins game in London’s Wembley Stadium.

Rucker is one of 30 singers that have been chosen to perform on “Forever Country,” a mash-up of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “On the Road Again,” and “I Will Always Love You” that commemorates the CMA Awards’ 50th anniversary. The second song from Rucker’s next album, “For the First Time,” was released on July 24, 2017. He announced his fifth country album, When Was the Last Time, on July 26, 2017, and it was released on October 20, 2017.

On the seventeenth season of The Voice, Rucker coached Team Blake as a mentor. In August of 2020, Capitol Records published Rucker’s Beers and Sunshine. Rucker covered “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica for the charity tribute album The Metallica Blacklist in 2021. Rucker is a die-hard Gamecocks, Dolphins, and Reds supporter.  He’s also a big fan of the movie Stir Crazy, which he’s viewed over 100 times.

After the football team was able to win 6 games following a pair of losing seasons after joining the Southeastern Conference, he delivered a free concert at the Colonial Life Arena to demonstrate his support for his alma mater. Rucker’s mother had a heart attack and died in November 1992.

“I’m Going Home” and “Not Even the Trees,” two Hootie & the Blowfish songs, were inspired by his anguish. Rucker’s first child, Carolyn Pearl Phillips, was born to his girlfriend (Elizabeth Ann Phillips) on April 21, 1995.In the year 2000, Rucker tied the knot with Beth Leonard.

On May 16, 2001, he and his wife, Beth, welcomed their second daughter, Daniella Rose. In 2005, they had their son, Jack. The Hootie song “Where Were You” is about Rucker’s troubled relationship with his father, and it was only released in Europe, where Rucker believed his father would not hear it.

His marriage was the inspiration for his country ballad “Alright.”  In 2020, Rucker and his wife announced their intentional separation. Rucker met golfer Tiger Woods in a bar in 1993, when Woods was 18 years old, and the two became friends. Rucker performed at both the golfer’s wedding and his father’s funeral, both with Hootie & the Blowfish.

He was a VIP visitor of Team USA at the 2016 Ryder Cup, and he attended Arnold Palmer’s funeral just before the Cup. On November 7, 2016, Rucker announced to ESPN that he has joined MGC Sports, a sports agency that represents golfers, football players, and coaches, including Steve Stricker and Kenny Perry.

He went on to say that he planned to cut down on his performance commitments from 100 to around 30 per year, and that his experience in the entertainment industry would be beneficial to potential clients. Rucker will be free to work for golfers without limitation, but because he is not a member of the NFL Players Association, he will be able to interact with NFL players only in extremely limited settings at first.

Rucker disguised himself as a 62-year-old music instructor, organised an open mic night, and worked as a roadie for the Undercover Boss series episode “Celebrity Undercover Boss: Darius Rucker,” which aired on May 12, 2017.Rucker has a long history of supporting sick and impoverished children through benefit concerts, volunteer work, the World Golf Foundation’s The First Tee Program, and the Hootie & The Blowfish Foundation, which has raised nearly $4.5 million for public education systems across South Carolina.

He is a board member of the MUSC Children’s Facility in Charleston, where his mother worked for over thirty years beginning when Rucker was a child, and has raised millions of dollars to assist create a new hospital.Following a visit of the institution in 2008, he pledged to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
