Debra Strobel Fischer is a senior United States Senator from Nebraska who has been in office since 2013. In 2012, she was elected to the Senate, and in 2018, she was re-elected. Fischer was a member of the Nebraska Legislature from 2005 until 2013, representing a rural district in the Sandhills. She is a Republican and the first woman elected to a full term in the United States Senate from Nebraska.

Her father served as the State Engineer/Director of the Nebraska Department of Roads under Governors Kay Orr and Ben Nelson, and her mother was a Lincoln Public Schools elementary school teacher.

She married Bruce Fischer, a Valentine native, in 1972 after meeting him at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. On the Fischer family cattle ranch south of Valentine, she and her husband reared three sons. She returned to the institution in 1987 to earn her B.S. in education.

Fischer became a member of the Valentine Rural High School Board of Education in 1990. She remained in office until 2004. Fischer served on the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education as a Commissioner from 2000 to 2004.

Fischer ran for the Nebraska Legislature in 2004, representing the 43rd legislative district. She garnered 2226 votes in the nonpartisan primary, placing second behind front-runner Kevin T. Cooksey, who garnered 2264 votes. In the general election, she defeated Cooksey by a margin of 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent, receiving 8178 votes to his 8050. She was re-elected in 2008 with no opposition. She was unable to run for re-election in 2012 due to Nebraska’s term-limits law.

Fischer launched her candidacy for the United States Senate in January 2012, after incumbent Democratic Senator Ben Nelson announced his retirement. Attorney General Jon Burning and State Treasurer Don Stenberg were expected to face off in the Republican primary, but Fischer and three lesser-known candidates were also on the ballot.

Fischer was chastised by environmentalists and others during the primary campaign because her family’s ranch near Valentine grazed cattle on federal land, leasing it for roughly $110,000 a year less than the market cost on private land. Opponents of federal grazing leases claimed that if she wanted to keep her family’s permission, she should give it up.
