Deborah Ann Stabenow is an American politician who currently serves as the senior United States Senator for the state of Michigan, a position she has held since 2000. She is a Democrat who defeated Republican incumbent Spencer Abraham to become the state’s first female U.S. senator. She represented Michigan’s 8th congressional district in the US House of Representatives from 1997 to 2001 before being elected to the Senate. She previously served on the Board of Commissioners of Ingham County and in the Michigan State Legislature. From 2011 through 2015, Stabenow chaired the Senate Agriculture Committee. In 2018, she was re-elected to a fourth Senate term. She rose to become the state’s senior official.

Stabenow ran for the United States House of Representatives in 1996, defeating incumbent Republican Congressman Dick Chrysler for the seat representing Michigan’s 8th congressional district. She beat Chrysler by a margin of 54 percent to 44 percent. She was re-elected with 57 percent of the vote in 1998.
