The Detroit Pistons are a professional basketball club from Detroit, Michigan, United States. The Pistons are a member of the Eastern Conference Central Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA), and their home games are held at Little Caesars Arena in Midtown.

The Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons were founded in 1937 as a semi-professional team and joined the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1941, winning two NBL championships in 1944 and 1945. In 1948, the Pistons became a member of the Basketball Association of America. In 1949, the NBL and the BAA united to become the NBA, which included the Pistons.

Detroit became the new home of the franchise in 1957. In 1989, 1990, and 2004, the Pistons won three NBA titles. The Pistons moved to Little Caesars Arena on June 20, 2017, with the approval of the Detroit City Council.  The decision was unanimously adopted by the NBA Board of Governors on August 3, 2017, making it official.

The move made Detroit the only U.S. city with Major League Baseball (MLB), National Football League (NFL), NBA, and NHL teams playing in its downtown region, and one of only two U.S. cities with all four teams playing in the same location (the other being Philadelphia).

The Pistons announced on January 29, 2018, that they had acquired Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, a 2018 first-round draught pick, and a 2019 second-round draught pick from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Avery Bradley, Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic, a 2018 first-round draught pick, and a 2019 second-round draught pick.

The 2017–18 season ended with a 39–43 record for the Pistons. For the eighth time in ten years, they missed the playoffs.  Stan Van Gundy, the Pistons’ head coach and president of basketball operations, announced his retirement on May 7, 2018.  The Pistons named Dwane Casey as their new head coach on June 11, 2018, and he signed a five-year contract with the team.

With a 41–41 record, the Pistons clinched a playoff berth as the Eastern Conference’s eighth seed.  The Pistons were swept in four games by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the 2019 NBA playoffs, setting an NBA record with 14 consecutive playoff losses. After it was revealed that Rudy Gobert had tested positive for COVID-19, the NBA halted the 2019–20 season on March 11, 2020.

Pistons’ season ended on June 4, 2020, when the NBA Board of Governors authorised a plan to restart the season on July 31, 2020, with 22 teams returning to play in the NBA bubble, which was later accepted by the NBA Players Association.  With a 20–46 record, the Pistons ended the season.

Troy Weaver was named general manager of the Pistons on June 18, 2020.  The Pistons concluded the 2020–21 season with the league’s second-worst record of 20–52, missing the playoffs for the second year in a row. The team’s 20 victories tied for the second-lowest total in franchise history.

Cade Cunningham was taken first overall in the NBA draught of 2021 by the Detroit Pistons. The mascot of the Detroit Pistons is Hooper (born March 3, 1996). He usually wears a Pistons jersey and appears as a horse. The equine mascot represents the team’s production of horsepower, similar to the pistons after which it is called. On November 1, 1996, Hooper replaced Sir Slam A Lot as the Pistons’ mascot, and he quickly established himself as the franchise’s most popular mascot.

Despite the Pistons’ return to their original colours and basketball emblem only a few years later, Hooper was introduced during the “teal era” to match with the team’s new horse logo.Hooper has matured into a beloved member of the Pistons’ team and fan base throughout the years.

Hooper has been updated as the team logos have evolved, as he was initially a larger character with a red and yellow mane and tail (to match the teal era design). Hooper now has a red and blue mane and tail, as well as a grey/chrome nose and around his eyes, as a reference to the auto industry in the Motor City, thanks to his transfer to Little Caesars Arena.
