Dick Durbin is an American lawyer and politician who now serves as the senior United States Senator for the state of Illinois, a position he has held since 1996. Since 2005, he has held the post of Senate Democratic Whip, the second-highest post in the Democratic leadership in the Senate, and since 2021, he has held the role of Senate Majority Whip. The Senate Judiciary Committee is chaired by him. Durbin was born in the Illinois city of East St. Louis.
He holds degrees from Georgetown University Law Center and the School of Foreign Service. During the 1970s, he worked as a state legal counsel and ran for lieutenant governor of Illinois, but lost. Durbin was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1982, representing the Spruce Grove neighborhood of Chicago.
In 1962, he graduated from East St. Louis’ Assumption High School. He worked at a meatpacking company during his high school years. In 1966, he graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service with a B.S. After Douglas mistakenly called him by that name, Durbin adopted the moniker “Dick,” which he had never used before. Durbin graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1969 with a J.D.
Durbin was elected to the Democratic Party’s congressional candidacy in 1982 for the now-defunct 20th congressional district, which included Macon and most of Springfield. He won by 1,400 votes over 22-year incumbent Paul Findley, a U.S. Navy veteran, whose district lines had been dramatically changed to remove rural farmland and incorporate economically downtrodden Macon as part of the decennial redistricting, replacing 35 percent of the voters and included more Democrats. Durbin’s campaign stressed joblessness and financial hardships faced by farmers, telling supporters that supporting him would send “a message to Washington and President Reagan that our economic policies are not working.” Durbin reaped the benefits of donati.
Durbin was named Assistant Democratic Whip by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle in November 1998. Durbin was elected Democratic Whip in the 109th Congress after the 2004 election. Since Everett Dirksen in the late 1950s, he was the first senator from Illinois to serve as a Senate Whip, and he was the fifth to serve in Senate leadership.
From 2005 to 2007, when the Democrats were the majority party in the Senate, Durbin served as Assistant Minority Leader. He later became the Majority Whip, or Assistant Majority Leader. Durbin chairs the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, in addition to his caucus duties. In the year 2000, the Democratic Party was in power.
In addition, the plan would have altered child care compensation and training to benefit both teachers and caregivers. It was never approved by the committee.
