Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessman and television celebrity who served as President of the United States from 2017 to 2021. Trump was born and reared in Queens, New York City, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University and the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. In 1971, he took over his father Fred Trump’s real estate company and renamed it The Trump Organization. Trump extended his business to include the construction and renovation of buildings, hotels, casinos, and golf courses.
Later, he launched a number of side businesses, primarily by licencing his name. More than 4,000 state and federal court proceedings have been filed against Trump and his enterprises, including six bankruptcies. From 1996 until 2015, he was the owner of the Miss Universe beauty competition. He co-produced and hosted the reality television series The Apprentice from 2003 to 2015. Populist, protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist have all been used to define Trump’s political beliefs. He ran as a Republican in the 2016 presidential election and defeated Democratic contender Hillary Clinton in an upset win, despite losing the popular vote. He was the first president of the United States who had never served in the military or in the administration. Protests erupted in response to his election and policies. Trump committed a lot of mistakes.
On January 20, 2017, Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. He signed six executive orders during his first week in office, including interim procedures in anticipation of repealing the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations, reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy, authorizing the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipeline construction projects, reinforcing border security, and beginning the planning and design process for the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipeline construction projects. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, were named Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor to the President, respectively. Before being inaugurated, Trump moved his businesses into a revocable trust run by his sons, Eric and Donald Jr, and a business associate. However, Trump continued to profit from his businesses and continued to have knowledge of how his administration’s policies affected his businesses. Though Trump said he would eschew “new foreign deals,” the Trump Organization pursued expansions of its operations in Dubai, Scotland, and the Dominican Republic. Trump was sued for violating the Domestic and Foreign Emoluments Clauses of the U.S. Constitution, marking the first time that the clauses had been substantively litigated. The plaintiffs said that Trump’s business interests could allow foreign government. Trump took office at the height of the longest economic expansion in American history, which began in June 2009 and continued until February 2020, when the COVID-19 recession began. In December 2017, Trump signed tax legislation that permanently cut the corporate tax rate to 21 percent, lowered personal income tax rates until 2025, increased child tax credits, doubled the estate tax exemption to $11.2 million, and limited the state and local tax deduction to $10,000.Trump speaks to automobile workers in Michigan, March 2017 Trump is a sceptic of trade liberalization, adopting these views in the 1980s, and sharply criticized NAFTA during the Republican primary campaign in 2015.
He withdrew the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, and launched a trade war with China by sharply increasing tariffs on 818 categories (worth $50 billion) of Chinese goods imported into the U.S.On several occasions, Trump said incorrectly that these import tariffs are paid by China into the U.S. Treasury. Although Trump pledged during his 2016 campaign to significantly reduce the U.S.’s large trade deficits, the U.S. trade deficit reached its highest level in 12 years under his administration. Following a 2017–2018 renegotiation, Trump signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) as the successor to NAFTA on January 29, 2020. Despite a campaign promise to eliminate the national debt in eight years, Trump as president approved large increases in government spending, as well as the 2017 tax cut. As a result, the federal budget deficit increased by almost 50 percent, to nearly $1 trillion in 2019. Under Trump, the U.S. national debt increased by 39 percent, reaching $27.75 trillion by the end of his term; the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio also hit a post-World War II high. Although the U.S. unemployment rate hit a 50-year low (3.5 percent) in February 2020, the unemployment rate hit a 90-year high (14.7 percent), matching Great Depression levels, just two months later, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An analysis published by The Wall Street Journal in October 2020 found the trade war Trump initiated in early 2018 neither revived American manufacturing nor resulted in the reshoring of factory production.
