Christopher Brees was born in Dallas on January 15, 1979, to prominent trial lawyer Eugene Wilson “Chip” Brees II and attorney Mina Ruth. His grandfather was a combatant in the Battle of Okinawa. According to Sports Illustrated, he was named after Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Drew Pearson, but in a 2014 interview, Brees stated that this story was “just legend.” Reid is his younger brother. When Brees was seven years old, his parents divorced and shared custody of the boys, who spent time at both of their parents’ homes. Today, he admits that life after the divorce was difficult and difficult; however, Brees and his younger brother, Reid, supported each other and became very close.

Brees received offers from only two colleges, Purdue and Kentucky, and chose Purdue because of its highly regarded academics. He earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management in 2001 and is a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After a relatively uneventful freshman season, Boilermakers head coach Joe Tiller gave Brees his first start during his sophomore year, and he became an integral part of Tiller and Jim Chaney’s unconventional “basketball on grass” spread offence, serving as offensive captain during his junior and senior years. He had the option of declaring for the NFL Draft in 2000, but chose to return for his senior year to finish his studies. He led the Boilermakers to victory in 2000.

Brees’s success in college led to projections that he would be a mid–late first-round draught pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, but he slipped due to concerns about his relatively short stature for a professional quarterback, a perceived lack of arm strength, and the perception that he had succeeded in college in a spread offence.

Brees was the second quarterback chosen in the 2001 NFL Draft, trailing Virginia Tech’s Michael Vick. The San Diego Chargers selected him with the first pick in the second round. San Diego had the first pick in that draught, but traded it to Atlanta in exchange for the fifth pick in the first round, which San Diego used to draught LaDainian Tomlinson.

Brees served as the backup quarterback to Doug Flutie, who started all 16 games that season. Brees made his professional debut against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 on November 4, 2001. He entered the game to replace Flutie, who had a concussion. He finished with 221 yards passing and his first career touchdown pass, a 20-yard pass to Freddie Jones.

Brees made his only appearance as a rookie against the Chiefs. On August 19, 2002, he was named the starting quarterback for the 2002 season, replacing Doug Flutie. For the Chargers, Brees started all 16 games. The Chargers started the season well, going 6–1, but faded down the stretch, finishing with a 2–7 record.
