Eminem is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972. Eminem is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, with over 220 million albums sold worldwide. He is credited with popularising hip hop throughout the middle of the United States and is widely regarded as one of the best rappers of all time.
Eminem’s worldwide fame and critically acclaimed work are often credited with breaking down racial barriers for white rappers in popular music. While much of his contentious work in the late 1990s and early 2000s drew widespread criticism, he became a symbol of popular anguish among the American underclass, and has been mentioned as an influence by a wide range of artists.
Eminem joined with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment after his debut album Infinite (1996) and the extended play Slim Shady EP (1997), and attained widespread success with The Slim Shady LP in 1999. His following two albums, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) and The Eminem Show (2002), were both commercial triumphs and Grammy Award nominees for Album of the Year. Eminem went on hiatus in 2005, following the release of his next album, Encore (2004), owing to a prescription drug addiction.
Relapse (2009) marked his return to the music industry four years later, followed by Recovery the following year. Recovery was the best-selling album worldwide in 2010, making it Eminem’s second best-selling album of the year following The Eminem Show in 2002. He went on to record the number one albums The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013), Revival (2017), Kamikaze (2018), and Music to Be Murdered By in the following years (2020).
Eminem made his acting debut in the musical drama film 8 Mile (2002), in which he played a fictionalised version of himself, and his song “Lose Yourself” from the album won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making him the first hip hop artist to do so. Eminem has appeared in cameo roles in the films The Wash (2001), Funny People (2009), and The Interview (2014), as well as the television show Entourage (2010). Shady Records, a joint venture with manager Paul Rosenberg, helped start the careers of artists like 50 Cent, Yelawolf, and Obie Trice, among others.
He also has his own Sirius XM Radio channel, Shade 45. Eminem was also a member of the hip hop group D12 in addition to his solo success. He’s also recognised for his collaborations with Royce da 5’9,” another Detroit rapper; the two are known as Bad Meets Evil.He was the best-selling music artist in the United States during the 2000s, and the third best-selling male music artist in the United States during the 2010s. He was named the “Artist of the Decade (2000–2009)” by Billboard.
The Recording Industry Association of America has awarded The Marshall Mathers LP, The Eminem Show, “Lose Yourself,” “Love the Way You Lie,” and “Not Afraid” all Diamond or higher certifications (RIAA). He was named to Rolling Stone’s lists of the 100 Greatest Artists and the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. He’s won 15 Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, 17 Billboard Music Awards, an Academy Award, and an MTV Europe Music Global Icon Award, among many more. Eminem’s family life was never stable; he constantly quarrelled with his mother, whom a social worker characterised as having a “very suspicious, almost paranoid nature.” Debbie brushed off critiques when her son became renowned, claiming that she had protected him and was responsible for his success. Debbie let Kimberly Anne “Kim” Scott, a runaway, remain at their house in 1987. After a few years, Eminem began an on-again, off-again romance with Scott.
He dropped out of Lincoln High School at the age of 17 after three years in ninth grade owing to truancy and bad grades. Despite his interest in English, Eminem avoided literature in favour of comic books and detested math and social studies. To help his mother pay the expenses, Eminem performed various jobs. He later claimed that she threw him out of the house on a regular basis, typically after seizing the majority of his salary. When she went to play bingo, he’d turn up the volume on the stereo and start writing tunes.
At the age of 14, Eminem began rapping with his high school classmate Mike Ruby under the names “Manix” and “M&M,” with the latter eventually becoming “Eminem.” Eminem and buddy and fellow rapper Proof snuck into neighbouring Osborn High School for lunchroom freestyle rap bouts. On Saturdays, they went to the Hip-Hop Shop on West 7 Mile, which is known as “ground zero” for the Detroit rap culture.
Eminem, who was struggling to make it in a primarily black business, was well-liked by underground hip hop fans. He wanted most of the words in his verses to rhyme, so he penned large words or phrases on paper and worked on rhymes for each syllable underneath. The drill helped Eminem rehearse sounds and rhymes, despite the fact that the words were often incomprehensible. Eminem released Angry Blonde on November 21, 2000, a non-fiction book that included a commentary on several of his own songs as well as several previously unseen images.
His book The Way I Am was released on October 21, 2008. It includes accounts about his journey to stardom, commentary on prior controversies, and original lyric sheets from “Stan” and “The Real Slim Shady,” as well as original lyric sheets from “Stan” and “The Real Slim Shady.” The following month, Debbie Nelson’s autobiography (My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem) was published, in which she describes her childhood and youth, meeting Eminem’s father, and her son’s rise to (and challenges with) stardom.

Eminem’s personal experiences, reflections, images, original artwork, and lyric sheets are included. It includes stories of his ascent to popularity and criticism on previous issues, as well as details about his difficulties with poverty, drugs, celebrity, heartbreak, family, and despair.
The book includes never-before-seen images from Eminem’s life. Original sketches, previously unpublished lyric sheets, and other rare mementos round out the collection. The autobiography bears the same name as the song. Eminem is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 220 million albums sold worldwide.
