Kenneth Eric Church (born May 3, 1977) is a singer-songwriter from the United States. Since 2005, he has released nine studio albums through Capitol Nashville. His debut album, Sinners Like Me, was released in 2006 and had three top 20 country singles, including “How ‘Bout You,” “Two Pink Lines,” and “Guys Like Me.”
Carolina, his second album, was released in 2009 and featured three more singles: “Smoke a Little Smoke,” “Love Your Love the Most,” and “Hell on the Heart.” His first No. 1 album, Chief, released in 2011, delivered him two No. 1 singles, “Drink in My Hand” and “Springsteen,” as well as the successes “Homeboy,” “Creepin’,” and “Like Jesus Does.”
“The Only Way I Know,” which he, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan recorded for Aldean’s album Night Train, was his third No. 1 song. Church was born to Ken and Rita Church on May 3, 1977, in Granite Falls, North Carolina (Dudley Shoals region). Church worked at Clayton Marcus, a furniture upholstery company where his father was president, with his father.
He got a guitar at the age of 13 and began writing his own tunes. He obtained a job at a neighbourhood pub by his senior year of high school, where he spent the most of his time at. In certain dive bars, he performed several Jimmy Buffett cover songs as well as a couple of his own original tunes.
He got into a couple altercations from the stage since some of these venues were so violent. For a few years, the band performed often in North Carolina taverns and restaurants. His college roommate, brother, and a fellow guitarist formed the band “Mountain Boys.”
Eric graduated from South Caldwell High School and then Appalachian State University with a marketing degree before going to Nashville. Church married a Spanish instructor in the town of Lenoir, North Carolina, after graduation.
Church’s father tried to urge him to pursue a business job, which he turned down as an aspiring musician . He flew to Nashville with his father’s financial backing after she called off the engagement. His father also gave him the chance to network and, more significantly, time to focus on honing his songwriting skills.
Church co-wrote Terri Clark’s 2005 single “The World Needs a Drink”and Dean Miller’s 2005 album Platinum’s tune “Whiskey Wings.” He began recording with several producers. Capitol Nashville expressed interest and watched him perform, but they were not persuaded to offer him a recording contract.
Autumn House-Tallant expressed her dissatisfaction with the music to HitQuarters. After he began working with producer Jay Joyce, the record label’s stance shifted. “Eric had a meeting with Nashville heavyweight Arthur Buenahora, a Sony Music publisher who also signed Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert,” Doyle says.
He made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry in April 2006. Church married Katherine Blasingame, a music publisher, on January 8, 2008 at West Glow Resort in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Church sang “You Make It Look So Easy,” a song he penned for Blasingame, at the wedding. Boone McCoy Church, their first son, was born on October 3, 2011; he is the subject of Church’s song “Three Year Old.
” Tennessee Hawkins “Hawk” Church, their second son, was born on February 15, 2015. Their Nashville home was featured in an episode of CMT’s Cribs. The Chief Cares Fund was established in 2013 by Eric and Katherine Church. The non-profit group has aided disadvantaged families in Tennessee, North Carolina, and even Nepal, providing clothing, decent bedding, and schooling to orphans.
The nonprofit also helps fund Humane Society no-kill animal shelters and has supplied Bibles to Haiti. On Eric Church’s website, people can donate to the foundation by just donating or by purchasing rare Chief Cares Platinum Tickets to his shows, with proceeds going to the Chief Cares Fund.
Because he wears contact lenses, Church wears his distinctive aviator sunglasses. He had to contend with the heat from the stage lights drying out his contacts while his career was just getting started. His aviators and Von Dutch denim trucker cap became his hallmark when he began performing in larger settings.
Church has been an outspoken supporter of marijuana use, as seen by songs like “Smoke a Little Smoke,” which Church’s record label advised him not to release despite the song’s moderate popularity as a single. Church has also made references to marijuana use in other songs such as “The Joint” and “I’m Getting Stoned,” .
the subject of a marijuana joke at the 49th ACM Awards, when Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan referred to Eric Church as the new-country generation’s Willie Nelson and compared Eric Church’s dressing room to a marijuana dispensary.
Church released the album Heart on April 16, 2021, followed by the albums & on April 20, and Soul on April 23. The triple-album set includes the singles “Stick That in Your Country Song” and “Hell of a View,” among others. Church performed two solo gigs on his The Gather Again Tour in October 2021, after two of his bandmates tested positive for COVID-19. The solo gigs took place on October 8 and 9 in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, respectively.
