Amy Lee, a singer, pianist, and keyboardist, and guitarist Ben Moody formed Evanescence in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1995. The band released their first full-length album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003, after making independent albums. Fallen sold over 17 million copies worldwide thanks to the breakthrough songs “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal,” and helped the band win two Grammy Awards out of six nominations.
Evanescence released their debut live album, Anywhere but Home, a year later, which went on to sell over one million copies worldwide. The Open Door, the band’s second studio album, was released in 2006 and went on to sell over five million copies. The band reformed with a new lineup in June 2009, and their next studio album, Evanescence, was released in 2011. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 list, selling 127,000 copies in its first week.
The album also charted at number one on the Rock Albums, Digital Albums, Alternative Albums, and Hard Rock Albums charts. The Pretty Reckless and Fair to Midland were among the acts on the band’s tour in support of their latest album in 2012. During this time, Troy McLawhorn also became a full-time member of the band. The band went on another sabbatical after the album’s tour cycle ended in 2012.
Evanescence came out of hiatus in 2015 and announced that they will resume performing; however, they said that no new Evanescence songs would be made because Lee was working on a solo project. In addition, Balsamo departed the band, and Jen Majura took his place. Evanescence announced in March 2017 that they were working on their fourth album, which would be released later that year. Synthesis was released globally on November 10, 2017, and marked a stylistic shift in the band’s music.
The Bitter Truth, the group’s fifth studio album, was released on March 26, 2021. The band announced dates and locations for a spring/summer 2019 United States concert tour on February 4, 2019. On September 17, 2019, Evanescence and Within Temptation, a symphonic metal band, announced a seven-city European tour named Worlds Collide, which was previously set for April 2020. The tour was postponed until fall 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour has been rescheduled for September 2021.
Lee was mentioned by Blabbermouth on May 11, 2019, about Evanescence’s plans to release a new studio album in 2020. “It’s dark and gloomy,” Lee remarked of the album during a Reddit AMA on November 21, 2019. It also has odd and sparse moments. A smidgeon of everything. There are some Open Door feelings, but they aren’t the same.” On September 5, 2019, Xbox released a launch trailer for Gears 5, which featured a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” with Lee’s vocals.
They intended to work with various producers each time they went into the studio to ensure a variety sound, but the epidemic forced them to abandon that plan. The band released the title and artwork for their forthcoming album, The Bitter Truth, on April 17, 2020. The first song from the album, “Wasted on You,” was released on April 24 alongside a music video. P. R. Brown directed the music video, which includes pictures of the band members at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Game Is Over,” the second single, was released on July 1. On August 14, the album’s third single, “Use My Voice,” was released. It was used in a HeadCount campaign to encourage Americans to vote in the US presidential election and featured vocal contributions from Lzzy Hale, Taylor Momsen, and Sharon den Adel. On December 4, 2020, it was revealed that the album would be released on March 26, 2021, and that it will feature 12 tracks, including an Evanescence outtake called “Take Cover.”
The fourth single, “Yeah Right,” was released as an instant download along with the album’s pre-order. The band’s fifth single, “Better Without You,” was released on March 5, 2021. Amy Lee’s struggle in the music industry is referenced in the song. In a Kerrang! cover storey, Amy Lee stated that The Bitter Truth is their fourth album, not 2017’s Synthesis, despite the fact that it is their fifth overall.Lee said that she created a song for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in 2005, but it was rejected due to its grim tone. “It’s just more fantastic stuff [for The Open Door],” Lee continued.
The Mozart-inspired “Lacrymosa” was another song rumoured to have been created for Narnia. The producers of The Chronicles of Narnia, on the other hand, refuted her assertion, claiming that this knowledge was “new to them” and that no Evanescence music had been scheduled for the soundtrack. Evanescence released “Together Again” as a digital download in 2010, a song that was originally written for The Open Door but was subsequently dropped. The song was released to support the United Nations Foundation’s earthquake relief operations in Haiti.
On February 23, 2010, it was finally released as a digital download. Evanescence has been classified as a rock or metal band by some critics, however most consider them to be a gothic band. Evanescence has been classified as a gothic metal outfit by publications such as The New York Times, Rough Guides, and Rolling Stone. whereas IGN, Spin, and NME have labelled them as gothic rock. They’ve been compared to a wide range of bands from many genres, including nu metal bands like Linkin Park, gothic metal bands like Lacuna Coil, and symphonic metal bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation.
Blender’s David Browne describes the band’s sound as “goth Christian nü-metal with a hint of gloomy Enya.” PopMatters’ Adrien Begrand compares Evanescence’s guitar riffs to nu metal. My Dying Bride’s Adrian Jackson believes Evanescence is doing something akin to his own gothic metal band, albeit in a more mainstream way. Industrial rock, alternative metal, hard rock, alternative rock, post-grunge, and progressive metal are among the genres and influences used to describe the band’s sound. Pantera,
Evanescence’s music was first marketed in Christian bookstores. The band later stated that they did not want to be classified as Christian rock. “They definitely recognised the CD would be sold in thes channels,” said Terry Hemmings, CEO of Christian music distributor Provident. After numerous Christian businesses began to remove the band’s CDs from their shelves, Alan Meltzer, chairman of Wind-up Records, issued a press release in April 2003 formally requested that they do so. Amy Lee told Billboard in 2006 that she had fought the “Christian band” label from the start, calling it a “Ben thing.” Lee reaffirmed her Christian faith in a 2011 interview with the San Antonio Current, but said that Evanescence “has never been a ‘Christian band.'”
