FC Dallas is an American professional soccer club situated in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. In Major League Soccer, the club competes in the Western Conference (MLS). The Dallas Burn were established in 1995 as a charter member of the league and began play in 1996. In 2004, the team’s current moniker was chosen.
Dallas’ home games are held at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, which has a capacity of 20,500 people and has been home to the team since 2005. Dallas’ home games were held in the Cotton Bowl during the club’s early years. The Hunt Sports Group, which is run by Clark Hunt and Dan Hunt, the organization’s president, owns the franchise.
The Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League and a portion of the Chicago Bulls are also owned by the Hunt family. The first Supporters’ Shield was won by FC Dallas in 2016. They finished second in the MLS Cup in 2010, falling in overtime to the Colorado Rapids.
On two occasions, the squad has won the United States Open Cup (in 1997 and again in 2016). North Texas SC, their completely owned USL affiliate, won the USL League One regular season and overall championships in 2019, the third division of American soccer.
FC Dallas was ranked as the 190th best club in the world and the ninth best in CONCACAF by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics in its Club World Ranking for the year ending December 31, 2016.The Dallas Burn had a logo that featured a fire-breathing black mustang behind a stylised red “Burn” wordmark, and they used a largely red-and-black colour scheme.
On October 17, 1995, a ceremony in New York City unveiled the logo and the original colours of red and black. The team changed its name to FC Dallas in 2005 to correspond with their transfer to Pizza Hut Park in the middle of the season, and has since worn a red, white, silver, and blue colour scheme with horizontally hooped stripes as their uniform design.
Republic Red, Lonestar White, Bovine Blue, and Shawnee Silver are the official colours for the game. Their home uniforms remained red, but their away uniforms transitioned to blue. A bull replaced the mustang on the club’s badge.
The squad debuted their first sponsored jerseys in July 2012, with the logo of AdvoCare, a Texas-based sports nutrition company. The hoops were a different shade of red instead of contrasting white for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
The inside of the collar was emblazoned with the words “Dallas ‘Til I Die,” while the back was emblazoned with Lamar Hunt’s initials “LH.” The club has always played in Dallas’ Cotton Bowl, which has a capacity of 92,100. The team played its 2003 home games at Dragon Stadium, a high school stadium in Southlake, a Fort Worth suburb, to save money due to the club’s disadvantageous lease with the Cotton Bowl.
The squad returned to the Cotton Bowl for the 2004 season after listening to its fans. The club relocated to Pizza Hut Park in Frisco’s northern suburbs in August 2005, a 20,500-seat soccer-specific facility. In September 2013, the stadium was renamed Toyota Stadium as Pizza Hut stepped down as a key sponsor.
The stadium is part of a complex that includes 17 soccer fields and is open for business more than 350 days a year, attracting 1.8 million visitors annually. In 2018, the stadium’s south end underwent major renovations, including the addition of a new home for the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
