In the sport of American football, the Florida Atlantic Owls represent Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The Owls compete in Conference USA’s East Division and the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) (CUSA). Coach Willie Taggart leads the Owls. In addition to a Sun Belt Conference co-championship squad in 2007, two Conference USA championships in 2017 and 2019, four postseason bowl appearances, and one appearance in the 2003 I-AA Playoffs, Florida Atlantic has produced a Sun Belt Conference co-championship team in 2007.

The Owls’ home games are held at FAU Stadium, which seats 29,419 people. In 1998, Florida Atlantic University stated that it will pursue the establishment of an NCAA football programme, with Howard Schnellenberger as director of football operations and head coach leading the charge.

Coach Schnellenberger took on the task of creating a programme from the ground up after his success in reviving teams at Miami and Louisville. Coach Schnellenberger, like his previous stops at Miami and Louisville, did not hold back in setting lofty goals and expectations for his new programme.

Coach Schnellenberger stated even before FAU played an intercollegiate game that the goal of FAU football would be to schedule the finest teams possible in order to compete for a national championship in Division I-A football. For a man like Coach Schnellenberger, such lofty ambitions were unsurprising.

When the football team at Louisville was threatened with being terminated by the administration, Schnellenberger made the audacious (and now legendary) statement, “[We are] on a collision course with the national championship.” Only time is a variable.”The first practise was held on August 29, 2000, at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, with 164 students auditioning for a spot on the squad.

FAU continued the tradition of the Homecoming King during the first practise on August 29, 2000, called the inaugural scrimmage game, this time including the King’s crowning ceremony as part of the halftime festivities. Wayne Burns was crowned Homecoming King after being voted in by the majority of students from all five campuses at the time.

then running a Q&A gauntlet alongside the top three candidates, which was conducted by a committee of students and faculty, who then voted to determine whether Mr. Burns would advance to the winners circle or if the next candidate would take the crown. Mr. Burns was chauffeured around the scrimmage game field in a convertible Rolls Royce, waving to the 164 students in the audience, many of whom had voted for him.

Burns was, and continues to be, FAU’s oldest Homecoming King. For the 2001 season, Florida Atlantic became an independent member of NCAA Division I-AA, now known as Division I FCS. The Owls’ first intercollegiate game was against Slippery Rock University, which they lost 40–7 in front of 25,632 fans at Joe Robbie Stadium, now known as Hard Rock Stadium.

The first season ended with a 4–6 record, followed by a 2–9 record the following year. The program’s first win came in its second game, a 31–28 victory against Bethune–Cookman, and a 31–21 victory over newly formed South Florida rival Florida International University in its maiden encounter.

With a 42–39 victory over Minnesota on September 15, 2007, FAU won its first Big Ten game.FAU defeated Troy in the final game of the 2007 season to win the Sun Belt Conference and earn an invitation to the 2007 New Orleans Bowl, which was the program’s first bowl trip.

As a result, Florida Atlantic set an NCAA record by being the second-youngest programme ever to be invited to a bowl game in only the seventh year of the football program’s history, and the third year of playing in Division I. Only the unbeaten 1958 Air Force Falcons, who had only played one year of Division 1 football before being invited to the Cotton Bowl, where they tied the TCU Horned Frogs in a scoreless draw on January 1, 1959, could match them.

Howard Schnellenberger announced his retirement from baseball on August 11, 2011.The Owls went 1–11 in 2011, with their lone win coming against UAB at home, 38–35. Carl Pelini, the defensive coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, was named as FAU’s new head coach on December 1, 2011, replacing Schnellenberger.

Pelini resigned from his post on October 30, 2013, after confessing to using illegal narcotics, notably marijuana and cocaine, to school administrators.Only three days before the school’s homecoming game, he and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis announced their resignations, which they won 34–17 under interim head coach Brian Wright. The Owls had a 5–14 record under Pelini’s watch.

Wright served as interim head coach for the 2012–13 season, winning the Owls’ final four games and leading them to their first bowl appearance since 2008–09. Despite finishing the season with a 6–6 record, the Owls were not invited to a bowl game. FAU’s new head coach, Charlie Partridge, was announced on December 16, 2013.

Partridge was the defensive line coach at Arkansas before accepting the position at FAU.  Partridge was sacked by FAU on November 27, 2016 after three seasons of 3–9. Lane Kiffin, formerly of USC and Tennessee, was named the Owls’ next head coach on December 12, 2016.  After a 49–6 thrashing of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and before FAU’s Boca Raton Bowl appearance against the SMU Mustangs, Kiffin resigned from FAU on December 7, 2019, to take over as head coach at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).

Kiffin finished his time at FAU with a 26–13 record and two Conference USA championships. Harrison Bryant, a tight end for Florida Atlantic University, received the John Mackey Honor in December 2019, becoming the first FAU player to win a major NCAA postseason award and the first consensus, and then unanimous, All-American.

Glenn Spencer, the Owls’ first-year defensive coordinator, has been designated interim head coach for the Boca Raton Bowl. Willie Taggart was named FAU’s new head coach on December 11, 2019.  Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the season has been cut short. Taggart guided the FAU Owls to a 5–4 record, including a loss in the first and only Montgomery Bowl to the Memphis Tigers.

The Shula Bowl is a rivalry game between Florida International University and Florida International University. It was first held in 2002 and has been held annually since since. Don Shula Award is given to the recipient. Former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula is honoured with a game and a trophy.

The game is usually held in Boca Raton or Miami, while other cities in the Miami metropolitan region have hosted meetings. The two teams have met 17 times in total, with Florida Atlantic leading 13–4 at the completion of the 2019 season. The 2005 game isn’t included since FIU was forced to relinquish its victory due to NCAA violations and fines.
