Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, both vocalists and songwriters, formed the country music duo Florida Georgia Line in 2010. Their debut single “Cruise,” released in 2012, set two major sales records: it was downloaded over seven million times, making it the first country song to receive the Diamond certification, and it was the best-selling digital country song for 24 weeks, until Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” surpassed it in July 2017.

To this day, “Cruise” is the band’s most popular song. “Cruise” is credited with helping to establish the “bro-country” genre of country music, which incorporates rock and hip-hop production elements and covers topics such as drinking, driving trucks, and sexual attraction. The term “bro-country” has been applied to a lot of their subsequent music.

Florida Georgia Line began their career as a cover band in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2010. They signed a deal with Big Loud Mountain in December of 2011.In 2012, they released their second EP, It’z Just What We Do, which charted on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. They signed with Republic Nashville, a subsidiary of Big Machine Label Group, a few months later.

On October 14, 2014, they released Anything Goes, their second album. On August 26, 2016, they released Dig Your Roots, and on February 15, 2019, they released Can’t Say I Ain’t Country. On February 12, 2021, they released their fifth album, Life Rolls On. Florida Georgia Line’s two members first became interested in music while attending church services.

Brian Kelley, a native of Ormond Beach, Florida, was a standout pitcher on his high school baseball team, earning a scholarship to Florida State University. He later transferred to Belmont University after realising he would not be successful in baseball. He began learning to play the guitar and then began writing music inspired by Casting Crowns, a Christian rock band.

Tyler Hubbard, a Monroe, Georgia native, was a church worship leader who, when he was in his teens, formed the hip hop group Ingenious Circuit. “Me and my friends drove trucks and listened to Garth Brooks, Alabama, Lil Wayne, and Eminem,” Kelley said. Following graduation, the duo decided to give themselves two years to succeed as a country duo after meeting through a campus worship group at Belmont University in 2008.

They moved in together and started working a variety of odd jobs to help pay the bills while also attending clubs on weekends.  Their first EP, Anything Like Me, was recorded and distributed digitally while they were still independent.  Nickelback producer Joey Moi discovered them at a county fair, and the three began working together in the studio.

The group spent days polishing songs, which were collected on the duo’s second EP, It’z Just What We Do, unlike typical country music sessions. The band modelled their sound after Nickelback, Shinedown, and Three Days Grace in terms of production, while Moi aimed for each song to have a structure similar to that of hair metal band Def Leppard.

When the song “Cruise” debuted on satellite radio’s The Highway channel and began selling well in the iTunes Store, major labels became interested, leading to a deal with Republic Nashville and Big Machine Label Group. Kelley considers his profession to be more of a way of life than a job. He told Forbes magazine, “Country music is constantly evolving and will continue to evolve.” On June 1, 2018, the duo debuted their single “Simple” on country radio.

The preview songs “Colorado,” “Talk You Out of It,” and “Sittin Pretty” have been released since then.  The album’s second single, “Talk You Out of It,” was released to country radio on November 5, 2018, and it was announced as the album’s second single.  Can’t Say I Ain’t Country, the duo’s fourth studio album, was released on February 15, 2019, after being announced on December 11, 2018.

They were named Breakout Artist of the Decade on September 30, 2019, as well as Single of the Decade for their Diamond-certified 2012 hit “Cruise” and Music Event of the Decade for their 2017 collaboration with Bebe Rexha, “Meant to Be.” Blessings was released to country radio on September 23, 2019, as the third single.

The duo made an appearance on the country remix of Justin Bieber’s January 2020 single “Yummy” on February 19, 2020. The original song was released five days before the remix as the lead single from Bieber’s fifth studio album, Changes. The duo released the first single from their upcoming fifth album, “I Love My Country,” on March 27, 2020.

The duo performed “Second Guessing” on NBC’s Songland, where it was first heard.  They dropped the 6-Pack EP on May 22, 2020.  They were featured on Chris Tomlin’s “Thank You Lord” with Thomas Rhett, which was released in June 2020.  The song was featured on Chris Tomlin’s collaboration album Chris Tomlin & Friends, which also included “Forever Home,” another song on which they appeared.

The album’s co-executive producers and co-writers on many of the songs were both members of the duo. “Long Live” was released by the duo in September 2020.  They then released “Lil Bit,” a collaboration with Nelly from his upcoming country-influenced album Heartland, on which the two are also co-executive producers. They were also featured on Chase Rice’s single, which was written by a long-time friend of theirs “Beer consumption. God is speaking. Amen.”.

They announced their fifth studio album, Life Rolls On, in December 2020, and it will be released on February 12, 2021, with “Long Live” and all six songs from the 6-Pack EP included. Kelley married Brittney Marie Cole, his seven-month-long girlfriend, on December 16, 2013.  Kelley starred in Treehouse Masters on Animal Planet in 2014.

Hubbard was in a dirt bike accident in February 2014 and suffered a back injury. Hayley Stommel, Hubbard’s longtime girlfriend, was married to him on July 1, 2015. Luca Reed Hubbard (born August 19, 2019) and Atlas Roy Hubbard (born December 2017) are the couple’s three children. Florida Georgia Line’s annual income was estimated to be $36.5 million in 2015, according to Forbes, split evenly between the two men.

With Hubbard’s support, Kelley announced in 2021 that he wanted to pursue a solo music career while remaining a member of Florida Georgia Line. When Florida Georgia Line banned law enforcement from being backstage during a show in Wisconsin in July 2016, they received backlash. Sheriff David Beth of Kenosha County said he never learned why the band’s agent requested this.

The band later requested a police escort to leave their concert, but the music festival management team denied them due to security concerns.  Brian Kelley apologised to Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth after the incident, saying it was a misunderstanding.  The two have apologised for their actions.
