Anderson’s mother, Rosemary “Posie” Alyce (née Lane), was a computer analyst who went on to become vice president of Neurofibromat She has ancestors that are of English, German, and Irish descent. Her parents relocated to Puerto Rico for 15 months following her birth, and then to London after that.
She and her family traveled to London in order for her father to attend the London Film School. During her childhood, she lived in the boroughs of Crouch End and Haringey in north London. Coleridge Primary School was where she went to school. At the age of 11 years old, Anderson’s family relocated to the United States, settling in the city of Grand Rapids in Michigan. They continued to maintain a residence in London, where they spent their summers. Anderson later stated that she had always intended to return to her native country of Great Britain.
She attended Fountain Elementary and City High-Middle School in Grand Rapids, where she was part of a program for exceptional kids that placed a major emphasis on the humanities. Following the relocation to Grand Rapids, Anderson went through a rebellious phase as a teenager, engaging in drug use, dating a much older lover, and adopting a punk aesthetic in the process (dyeing her hair various colors, shaving the sides of her head, sporting a nose piercing and an all-black wardrobe).
She was referred to counseling when she was 14 years old. The Dead Kennedys and Skinny Puppy were among the bands that Anderson enjoyed listening to. Her classmates dubbed her the “class clown,” the “most strange girl,” and the “girl who is most likely to be arrested.” During her high school graduation ceremony, she was jailed for breaking and entering the building in an attempt to glue the locks on the doors. She was eventually able to have the charges reduced to trespassing.
In her early years, Anderson was interested in marine biology; nevertheless, it was during her adolescence that she discovered her passion for theatre, and she began acting in high school shows during her freshman year and afterward in community theatre productions. She has also worked as a student intern at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre & School of Theatre Arts, where she gained valuable experience. Anderson is the eldest of three siblings, and he is the most intelligent.
She was criticized and felt out of place as a teenager in the American Midwest because of her English accent and background, and she eventually developed a Midwestern accent. She has maintained her ability to effortlessly switch between her American and English accents. According to Anderson, she has been questioned whether she feels more like a British than an American during an interview with BlogTalkRadio in May 2013.
“I’ve been asked whether I feel more like a British than an American, and I’m not sure what the answer to that question is.” I’m aware that I consider London to be my home, and I’m really content with it as my residence. I adore London as a city, and I’m completely at ease in it as well. In terms of my own personal identity, I’m still a little perplexed.
Anderson is a staunch supporter of women’s rights. During an August 2014 interview with Glamour magazine, Anderson stated that she had “feminist bones,” and that when she hears things or sees people behave to women in particular ways, she “has very little tolerance for it.” In addition to her tattoos, Anderson has various piercings, all of which, according to her, are for “peace of mind, the right attitude, right action.” She engages in a daily meditation practice. Their daughter, Piper Maru, was born on September 25, 1994, and she is their only child. Piper’s godfather, showrunner Chris Carter, dedicated an episode of The X-Files to her memory. As she remarked in a December 2014 interview with the British newspaper the London Evening Standard: “I am a committed heterosexual lady who supports people’s right to express their sexuality in any way they choose.” According to a January 2015 interview, Anderson also identified as straight. She told The Daily Telegraph in March 2015 that she was open to the notion of establishing another same-sex relationship, saying, “To me, a relationship is about loving another human being; the gender of that person does not matter.”
In 2018, she confirmed this to The New York Times, adding, “I could be with a woman next year.” and, “It’s just who I am.” “I have absolutely no problem with it at all, and I couldn’t care less if other people have a problem with it.” In an appearance on Watch What Happens with Andy Cohen, Gillian admitted that the last time she had been with a woman was shortly after she relocated to New York from her home in Connecticut following graduation.
