Grace Gealey was born on July 26, 1984, in Butler, Pennsylvania, and has lived in the Cayman Islands since she was a small child. Because she was raised by deaf parents, she is fluent in sign language. After relocating to the United States, she attended the University of South Florida in Tampa, where she received her bachelor’s degree in theatre arts. Gealey went on to receive her Master’s of Fine Arts in acting from the University of California, Irvine, where she had previously studied.
In 2015, Gealey announced her engagement to Trai Byers, with whom she co-starred on Empire. They exchanged vows on April 14, 2016, in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, with Byers. Gealey then relocated to New York City, where she appeared in a number of Off-Broadway productions, including Venus Flytrap: A Femme Noir Mystery and Rent, among others. In 2013, she appeared in Chicago productions of The Misanthrope and Tartuffe, among other roles. She was cast as Anika Calhoun in the Fox musical prime-time drama Empire, which co-starred Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, and premiered in 2014.
The first episode of the series aired on January 7, 2015. A year later, her role as Kate, a jazz singer and lounge owner, was cast for the independent horror film Bent, in which she also appeared. In 2018, Gealey published a children’s book titled I Am Enough, which was inspired by her childhood experiences of being bullied because her parents were deaf. She wrote it in order to encourage children to love and accept their own bodies. Grace and Trai Byers, the faces of the Cayman Islands’ new romance advertising campaign, are putting their love on display to help market the destination to couples looking for a romantic island getaway or wedding.
Grace Byers of Empire was an obvious choice for bringing this campaign to life because she is a native of the island. Couple Grace and Trai Byers, who co-starred in the film, were no strangers to the enchantment and beauty that the destination has to offer when they tied the knot in a private, secret Grand Cayman beachside ceremony last year in front of their closest family and friends. She is now encouraging anyone who is looking for a romantic, one-of-a-kind, yet authentic island experience to visit the Cayman Islands and discover for themselves why she holds the country so dear to her heart. Here, she discusses some of the specifics of her Caymanian wedding, including why the island is ideal for lovers, as well as some of her favorite places to eat, play, and stay while visiting the island on her frequent visits.
It’s a no-brainer that you’ll be a part of the Cayman Islands’ new romance advertising campaign. Is there anything that distinguishes the Cayman Islands from other Caribbean destinations when it comes to romance and weddings? I am overjoyed to be the face of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism’s fall romance ad campaign with my husband Trai Byers, and I am grateful for the opportunity.”
Until I moved back to the United States when I was 18, Cayman was my entire childhood, my only home, and the only culture I had ever known. When I returned Trai [Byers] to the islands, it was a memorable experience. Because Cayman is such an important part of my identity, I felt it was important to share it with Trai as well. His first impression of the island was how stunning and gorgeous it was, but his second impression was that I had changed – that my life had come to life in a different way while he was there.
Although I didn’t want to monopolize the conversation by “strongly suggesting” that the wedding should take place in the Cayman Islands, it turned out that I didn’t even have to do so! I was pleasantly surprised! He was the one who was completely sold on the idea of getting married there. It was a wonderful gift, and we had a truly wonderful time as a result. Instead of a sea of flowers and other decorations, we had the Caribbean Sea as our backdrop, which was breathtaking. ‘I don’t even want to take anything away from that,’ Trai said.
‘The island itself is absolutely breathtaking.’ Hey, when a man is correct, he is correct! Following that experience, we were thrilled to partner with the Department of Tourism (DOT) in order to introduce the world to the luxurious side of Cayman. With only 100 square miles, we’re such a small island that if you blink while looking at a map, you might miss us! And it’s for this reason that I’m thrilled to be a part of raising more awareness about the sublime beauty and natural intoxication that my country has to offer.
It’s an experience that should not be missed – not even for a split second.” “It all depends on what you’re trying to achieve,” says Grace Byers. That is one of the reasons why I adore the island: it is extremely adaptable. Beautiful beachside weddings are popular among couples, and we were fortunate enough to have one—and it was breathtakingly beautiful! Our water is a brilliant blue, and our sands are a fine, powdery white, making for an idyllic setting.
Perfect in every way. If you are looking for a more cultural or historical setting for your wedding, our Pedro St. James Castle is one of the most popular places to get married in the area. Not only is it still standing as the oldest structure in the United States, but it has served many functions throughout our history as a courthouse, a jail, the birthplace of our democracy, and many other things too numerous to mention! We are talking about a true historical part of our culture that has been formed in a beautiful building that creates a stunning reveal for brides and a beautiful backdrop for photos.
Our luxury hotels, such as the Ritz-Carlton, Kimpton, Marriott, and Westin, provide outstanding accommodations for even the most beautiful of weddings. We are known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean, and this is due to the fact that we have an unlimited number of breathtaking wedding locations to choose from. The food on the island is outstanding in general. We have a melting pot of different chefs, some of whom were born and raised in the Cayman Islands, and others who have come from all over the world to work here. So decadent and delicious are the concoctions that result from this combination of ingredients.
That was a big deal for Trai and me as well — we are both huge foodies! Nothing less than mouth-watering cuisine was required for the wedding reception. Not to mention the fact that you’ll be able to enjoy nearly perfect weather all year long. It rains only on the rarest of days!” Obviously, Caymanian cuisine is my favorite type of cuisine to consume! ” If you’re looking for authentic local fare, I’d recommend Miss Vivien’s Kitchen in East End (which happens to be one of my personal favorites)! There’s also an incredible Italian restaurant called Casanova’s, which is absolutely delicious.
Everyone on the island is aware of it. Trai and I have traveled to both Venice and Rome, and the Italian cuisine served at this restaurant surpasses both of them. It’s a popular destination on the island, and you can be sure to get a delicious meal there. As far as recreational activities go, Camana Bay, which is located in the heart of the island, is my current favorite. There is a tonne of really great restaurants there, as well as a bookstore, shops, movies, ice cream/gelato, and everything else you could possibly want! You could literally spend the entire day at Camana Bay and remain entertained by participating in a variety of activities.
Furthermore, it is within walking distance of other attractions on the island, which is a plus. When I was younger, I would stay with family, but now that we’re married, we’re forced to stay in hotels. Ha! As a result, we have a choice between four options. The Kimpton would be our top choice because it is truly exceptional. Everything about this resort is excellent, from the accommodations to the service to the food. It’s just a really nice place to stay in terms of comfort.
The Ritz Carlton is also extremely well done, as are the Marriott and Westin hotels, which round out the top three. It’s the fact that they employ a large number of people from the local community that I find so appealing about those latter three businesses. Our people are a significant asset to the island. Having that “Cayman-kind” is at the heart of who we are. The people back home are the kindest, sweetest, and most thoughtful people you will ever meet or come across in your entire life.
The opportunity to meet and be serviced by people who live in and know the country like no one else is extremely important to me. As a result, those are the top four places to stay in my opinion.” The following is from Grace Byers: “We haven’t brought anyone down (yet! ), but I know that Yazz has left because he attended Winter Music Fest in December. I was delighted to be of assistance when he inquired about accommodations and restaurants. In addition, Terrence Howard has visited Cayman a few times, and we’ve talked about it a lot because he loves the island!” “One of the most wonderful things about the Caribbean is that we are all members of the same family,” says the author. Bob Marley’s song ‘One Love’ was not a hyperbole; it was meant to be taken literally.
When people from Caribbean countries come together, we consider each other to be members of our extended family. Hurricane Ivan struck the Cayman Islands in approximately 2004 and wreaked havoc on the country, causing widespread devastation. It took approximately ten years for the island to regain its former state of normalcy. Having that personal experience, as well as seeing what is happening now, had a profound impact on me and everyone I knew; it affected us both sympathetically and empathetically.
There are some Dominican and St. Maarten friends of mine with whom I’ve checked in: ‘Have you checked in with your grandmother yet?’ And if so, with your aunt?’ Fortunately, no one I knew had a family member or friend who had passed away. However, the devastation caused by the onset of hurricanes on these islands has been a devastating event. It is our island’s genuine Cayman-kind efforts that have made such a significant difference in these difficult times; Cayman has sent donations, supplies, water, and moral support to our fellow islanders in need, and it is this that has made such a significant difference. To continue to demonstrate love through our actions as a people and as a country.”
